Parametric studies based on laboratory pilot tests were performed to investigate the relationships between electrical resistivity and properties of contaminated soils. Three kinds of sandy soils sampled and leachate from an industrial waste landfill were mired to model the contaminated soils. Electrical resistivity of soils was measured by using a simulated resistivity cone penetrometer probe. In the experiments. the electrical resistivity was observed by changing the water content, void ratio, unit weight, degree of saturation, and concentration of the leachate. The test results show that the electrical resistivity of soils depends largely on the water content and the electrical property of pore water rather than unit weight and types of soils.
Permafrost refers to the condition where the ground is frozen. It is crucial to review and evaluate the ground's characteristics before construction. In this study, electrical resistivity surveying is chosen as the investigative technique to apply and illustrate the results on the state of permafrost ground and to summarize its applicability. Field experiments are conducted in the Yeoncheon area of South Korea, which has a freezing index of 522.6°C·days. The target area is categorized into two ground conditions: the first where the original ground freezes, and the second involves excavating the original ground up to a depth of 3 meters, backfilling it, and then artificially injecting fluid. Thus, frozen ground conditions are simulated under both natural and artificial circumstances. Electrical resistivity surveys are performed under both above-freezing and sub-zero temperature conditions, with the experiments conducted at sub-zero temperatures revealing relatively more high-resistivity zones due to the temperature conditions. In this area, the distribution of soil moisture content is also investigated using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique. It is observed that the ground into which water is artificially injected had a relatively higher moisture content, although the difference is minor. Finally, a 3D map of the target ground is constructed based on the measured electrical resistivity values, and through this, the distribution of porosity, a crucial design parameter, is also depicted. This research demonstrates that the electrical resistivity technique can effectively evaluate the state of frozen and unfrozen ground and further suggests that it can detailed extract the characteristics of the target ground.

The corrosion rate of buried steel pipes for water works was investigated under soil environment. Steel pipe shows various characteristics caused by complicated environment condition of underground and especially the corrosion rate of it depends on the resistivity of soil controlled by content of water. In this paper, the corrosion behavior of steel pipe was observed by polarization test under soil and the silica sand in the water content range of 0-50%. Generally it is well known that the resistivity of soil decreased rapidly over 15% water content. In fact the corrosion rate, corrosion potential, and corrosion consumption (MPY) of steel pipe were shown very different aspects within 20% water content.
Electrical resistivity survey (2D and 3D) were employed for detection of possible weak zone of core zones of three central core earth-rockfill dams in Korea. In the 2D results, the core zones is lower resistivity zone with less than $50{\sim}400ohm{\cdot}m$, and the basement is relatively higher resistivity zone with over $1,000ohm{\cdot}m$. In the 3D results, especially, the weak zone with under $100ohm{\cdot}m$ was detected spatial distribution area in the dam. We also drilled boreholes to collect soil samples of core zones of each dam. Water was not used during boring, because water for rotary wash boring could cause structural damages in earth dams. We found that the soil samples of core zones from all of the boreholes correspond to CL (USCS), but we also found that the fluidized or water-saturated soil samples were found in lower resistivity zones. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey and drilling method without water are a quick and efficient method for structural-health evaluation which is detection of possible weak zones in earth core rockfill dams.

Recently, constructions of coastal structure including wind turbine structure have increased at southwest shore of Korea. There is a big difference of tide which rage from 3.0 m to 8.0 m at south and wet shore of Korea, respectively. In such ocean circumstance, large scour may occur due to multi-directional tidal current and transverse stress of the wind. therefore scour surrounding wind turbine structure can make system unsafe due to unexpected system vibration. In this study, hydraulic resistance capacity, i.e., critical velocity and critical shear stress, was evaluated by RCT. Uni-directional and bi-directional hydraulic resistance capacities of the samples which were consolidated by different preconsolidation pressures were correlated with soil resistivities of same samples. According to the correlation, it is possible to estimate hydraulic resistance capacity from electrical resistivity of soil. Through the updating the correlation for various soil types, it is expected that the hydraulic resistance capacity of whole construction site will be simply determined from the electrical resistivity.
It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.
Among many geophysical prospecting methods, GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) and electrical resistivity method have been applied to a open waste dumping landfill for measuring of the site area and depth. The surveying was limited to a boarder of the site and inside area because of the field situation. The data of GPR were recorded by 50MHz antenna, and dipole array was used for electrical resistivity survey in the same survey line for the integrated interpretation. The result of GPR clearly indicated the horizontal boarder of site. However, the data of GPR did not have enough to measure the depth of site clearly. The electrical resistivity method may show the effective information by integrated interpreation. These results coincided with results of the boring test. Therefore, a combination of GPR and electrical resistivity is a good method for surveying of suspective open waste dumping landfill area and it's depth.

To evaluate geology and extent of leachate migration around the landfills, electrical resistivity survey were conducted in area of uncontrolled landfills in Cheonan and Wonju. The Cheonan landfill is located above the paddy fields and the resistivity survey lines were crossed to confirm possible pollution of the paddy fields by leakage of the landfill leachate. In Wonju, the landfill and the downgradient paddy fields are divided by a concrete barrier wall. At the bottom of the landfill, there is a leachate settlement system but has not been in operation. And a total of 4 survey line installed (1 parallel and 3 perpendicular to mean groundwater flow direction). According to the resistivity survey results, the landfill leachate in Cheonan appeared to be restricted only within the interior of the landfill, not to migrate into the subsurface of the paddy fields. These results are well consistent with electrical conductivity values of groundwaters obtained from a periodic analysis of water qualities. In Wonju, however, it was inferred that the leachate emanating from the landfill migrated beneath the abandoned leachate settlement system and it would reach the downgradient paddy field.

A design criterion of grounding systems is commonly based on low frequency resistance in Korea. When lightning surges which have high frequency components are injected into the grounding system, the grounding impedance is greatly different from the static grounding resistance. This paper presents the grounding adimittance and phase on the frequency range from 100 [Hz] to 15 [MHz] using water tank simulating the grounding system in different water resistivities. As a result, capacitive effect is dominant over the frequency of 100 [kHz] at the water resistivity of 1,000 [$\Omega$ m]. On the other hand, the inductive characteristics appear at the low water resistivity. Consequently, dependence of grounding impedances on the frequency of injected current is strongly related to resistivity.

This paper presents the dependances of transient grounding impedances of counterpoises on the soil structures and the injected point of impulse currents. The transient and conventional grounding impedances of the 25 and 50[m] counterpoises buried in the soil with different resistivity were measured and analyzed as a function of the rise time of impulse currents. As a result, the transient grounding impedances give an inductive behavior, and the trend of the conventional grounding impedances is similar to that of the transient grounding impedances. The ground resistance of counterpoises is irrespective to the injected of impulse current, but the transient and conventional grounding impedances in a short time range especially depend on the soil resistivity and position of the injected point of impulse currents.
