The purpose of this study is to investigate interpersonal support, tension in lifechanges & satisfaction. The selected sample is composed of 387 housewives in ChongJoo city. SAS pc program was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Data was analyzed by frequency, F-test, percentage, mean, Duncan's Multiple Range Test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Regression Analysis. Major findings as follows: 1)At wedding & funeral ceremony, kin networks of her parents & parents-in law side were variables to have influence on tension in life changes. And the number of social organization participated were a variable to have influence on the satisfaction. The age of couple, education of couple, duration of marriage, income, family lifecycle, the number of children, pattern of family were variables to influence tension in life changes, but were not variables to influence on the satisfaction. 2) At usual or wedding & funeral ceremony, kin networks of her parents side were variables to influence on instrumental & companionship support. And the number of friends was a variable to influence on companionship & informational support. The number of neighbors was a variable to influence on instrumental, companionship & informational support. The number of social organization participated was a variable to influence on companionship & emotional support. The age of couple, education of couple,income, duration of marriage, family life cycle, number of children, family size, family type were variables to influence on interpersonal support. 3)The relationship between tension and satisfaction in life changes was negative, and between instrumental support and satisfaction was negative also. But between companionship support and satisfaction was positive relationship and between tension of personal &social life and instrumental support was positive relationship. The relationship between tension of marriage life and companionship support was negative and between tension of family life and information support was negative relationships. The received companionship support was lower tension in life changes than not received it. But the received instrumental support was higher tension of personal & social life. The received companionship & informational support was higher satisfaction than not received them. But the received instrumental support was lower satisfaction than not received it. 4) Instrumental & companionship support, at usual kin network of her parents in taw side, at wedding & funeral ceremony kin network of her parents side,were variables to influence on tension in life changes. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how social supports, such as family, teachers, and friends, affect the school adjustment of children who were abused by their parents, and suggest the interventional solutions in order to improve the social support system and school adjustment. 692 children, aged 4 to 6 in primary schools in Busan, were chosen for the survey and all of them are currently under children's service. Among the respondents, 485 children (70.1%) have experienced abuse, and neglect was the most frequent abuse experienced among them. Neglected children were influenced by teachers, families and friends' support in terms of social support for school adjustments. However, the emotionally abused children were influenced by families, teachers and friends in terms of social support for school adjustments. In addition, children who experienced physical abuse have been influenced by families and teachers'support. Support from friends has no meaning for them. As a result, this paper suggests that an effective interventional solution will be necessary for the school adjustment of abused children. The effective interventional solutions are firstly that neglected children require a high level of attention from their teachers and teachers should encourage parents with parental education and counseling to be helpful for their children. Secondly, emotionally abused children require strong family support through parents'education for child development and caring support programs. Finally, physically abused children need caring programs which develop supportive relationship skills both with parents and teachers for their adjustment in school.
The purposes of this study were to explore the differences in maternal parenting behaviors, parents' conflict, social support, and social competence according to boys' and girls' depression level. The participants of this study were 150 children of 4 to 6 grades and their teachers from one elementary school in Seoul. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The result were as follows: Firstly, depressive boys perceived less maternal warmth and more parents' conflict than non-depression group. And boys of depression group had less task orientation than non-depression group. Secondly, depressive girls perceived less maternal warmth, supervision, and parents' support, and more parents' conflict than non-depression group. And girls of depression group were rated having less peer social skills, frustration tolerance than non-depression group by teachers.
Instruments used in this study of social support effects on the behavioral problems of children raised by their grandparents compared with children raised by their parents were the revised Social Support Appraisal (Dubow & Ulman 1989) and the revised Children Behavior Criteria (Achenbach, 1991). Results showed that, compared with children raised by their parents, children raised by their grandparents engaged in (1) more excessive, nervous and immature behavior; (2) were aware of less support of friends and family (3) When given a higher degree of support from friends they engaged more excessive and aggressive behavior and (4) They displayed counter-buffering effects, namely immature behavior when given higher family support.
Purpose: This study was designed to identify the degree of self-image and social support among Korean-Chinese adolescents and investigate the relationship between these variables. Method: A total of 621 Korean-Chinese adolescents in five middle schools in YanBian, China were recruited from March 1st to the 9th, 2005. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, and ANOVA with the SPSS 11.5 program. Result: In Korean-Chinese adolescents, the total self-image score was statistically different for age, parents' education status, parents' job and living with parents. In the 12 subscales, scoresof emotional tone, impulse control, sexuality, social functioning, vocational attitudes and self-reliance had significant differences between groups regarding gender. The total self-image was in the average range. However, areas of mental health and family function were lower than average and the scale of idealism washigher than average. The adolescents perceived parent's support was higher then friend's support. There was a positive correlation between self-image and social support. Conclusion: The findings suggest there is a need to examine self-image and social support of Korean- Chinese adolescents according to their parents' marital status and a need to develop a program to help these broken family's adolescents.
This study investigates the differences in parent-related stress, social support, and school adjustment according to self-esteem of children with disabled and non-disabled parents. The data were collected from 176 students between 4th and 6th grade in Chungbuk area. For a data analysis, mean, frequency, percent, three-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation were used. The results show that children's perceived parent-related stress, social support, and school adjustment are varied according to their self-esteem. Those with higher self-esteem were found to have tusker perception level in social support and school adjustment. On the contrary, they were found to have lower level in parent-related stress. The findings indicate further that girls have a closer relationship with their teachers than boys and that children with disabled parents have a closer relationship with their teachers than those with non-disabled parents. However, as opposed to prediction, parental disability itself caused no difference in the level of parent-related stress.
Participants in this study of variables that contribute to child abuse were parents of 1,094 families with children under the age of 18. The instrument, Straus's Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales(1998), consists of 3 subscales : physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. The degree of child abuse varied by age of child and parents, parents' marital satisfaction, the stress of bringing up children, social support, and family setting. There was a higher tendency to child abuse among alcoholic parents, dissatisfaction with marriage, parental child rearing stress, and isolation from social support. Educational and social welfare suggestions were made for the prevention and treatment of child abuse.
This study examined whether the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differ by grade, gender, reason for and length of residence, age at entering the institution, parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. We assumed that the ego-identities of institutionalized children had an effect on social interactions. The subjects were 121 5th and 6th graders, 135 middle, and 85 high school students who were institutionalized in Seoul. As predicted, the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differed by grade, and by such social interactions as parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. Results support the importance of social interactions for understanding the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether social support buffers the deleterious effects of strain on life satisfaction of the aged and to provide information for finding out ways of increasing their life satisfaction. The subjects of this study were 252 aged persons living in Kwangju and Joun-nam. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency percentage mean standard deviation reliablity Pearson's correlation multiple regression analysis through the SAS package program. 1) The support score from family was higher than the support from friends and the total point of life satisfaction of the aged was 28.4 which was above the median 24. 2) Social support especially the support from family buffer the negative effect of strain on life satisfaction of the aged. The result indicates that the family remains a supportive system for the aged parents Therefore A program in necessary for aged parents to promote the emotional solidarity between the aged parents and their children.
When parents as primary care takers to the mentally disabled adult are no longer taking care of their care-needed offsprings because of their own death or illness, instead themselves. who take care of their offsprings with the mental disability? Therefore, 'permanency planning' is very important for reduction of parents' care burden and social integration of mentally disabled adults. Accordingly, this study aims to find out factors which are related to permanency planning for adults with the mentally disability For the purpose of the study, 192 parents of the adult with the mental illness and mental retardation were conducted a survey regarding type of permanency planning, and its related factors including social functioning level of the mentally disabled, care burden, parents' self-perception of being aged, help from offspring without mental disability, social support, and financial ability. Furthermore, this study examined correlation between these factors and residential planning. Results obtained by the study were as follows: 1) 51% of the parents are having a plan for institution and most parents want other family member to take care for financial planning for their mentally disabled offsprings. 2) As a result of multiple regression for finding out factors which affect parents' permanency planning, social functioning level of the mentally disabled, parents' self-perception of being aged, help from offspring without mental disability, social support, and financial ability were statistically significant influenced factors, which has 23.3% of explanatory power. 3) As a result of step-wise multiple regression, financial ability, parents' self-perception of being aged, and help from offspring without mental disability were the most powerful influenced factors for permanency planning. 4) In case of having a plan for residential types-which are institution and community living-, parents who have a plan for the mentally disabled offsprings' future residence as community living than institution have the offsprings with more social functioning and also have more help from offspring without mental disability. Therefore, this study concluded that welfare policy for mental health and the handicapped which secure various types of community living facilities and income security is strongly needed. At the same time, mental health profession is needed to have more active interest and intervention for permanency planning for their adult clients and parents.
