The data were collected from questionnaires completed by 656 elementary school children(2nd and 5th grade) and the middle school children(2nd grade) in rural and urban area. The statistical methods adopted for data analyses were frequencies, mean, standard deviation, T-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe-test, Two-way ANOVA, and correlation coefficient. Children received more support from parents and friends in convoy function of social support. Convoy size of social support increased with age. Rural children had larger convoy size in the inner circle, and smaller convoy size in the middle circle than urban children did.

The levels of depression were significantly different among variables, e.g., sex, age, and monthly income. The mean scores of the item for social support and family resilience were 3.11/5 and 3.32/5, respectively. Family resilience differed significantly according to monthly income. Parental depression was negatively correlated with the social supports and family resilience. Social support was correlated positively with family resilience. With care satisfaction as an endogenous variable, family support, expert support and care stress had a significant direct effect. With the psychological well-being as an endogenous variable, care satisfaction and care stress had a significant effect, but the health state of parents didn't. In case of indirect effect, the care stress had a significant mediator effect on the effect of the physical function and maladjustment behavior of adult children and the health state of parents on the psychological well-being of parents. Care satisfaction had a significant mediator effect on the effect of family support, expert support and care stress on the psychological well-being of parents. According to the result of the Multiple Group Analysis, the path showed a statistically significant difference between gender was friend support→care satisfaction, care stress→psychological wellbeing, expert support→care satisfaction. On the basis of the study results, practical suggestions were made.
The purpose of the study is to investigate kinds of social support provided by various types of family members, relationships between types of family support and personal variables of the elderly and structural variables of the family network, and the relationships between family support and depression of the elderly. Here, family included a spouse, sons and daughters and their spouses, grandchildren, siblings and parents of an older person. Social support consisted of emotional, instrumental, financial help and social companionship. Two-hundred-eight older persons of age 60 years and over were interviewed. The main results of the study were as follows: an older person's spouse tended to provide more for emotional support, sons for financial help, daughters-in-law for instrumental support, and daughters for emotional and financial support. Some elderly were also provided for emotional support by parents and siblings. Possibility of daughters-in-laws and grandchildren as support providers was also verified. Various factors among personal and network-structural characteristics were significantly related to many types of social support provided by various types of family members. In general, while younger female elders, elders with good IADL ability or more frequent contacts with family members tended to have social support from more family members, support from daughters-in-law was provided to the elderly with less functional abilities. Various types of social support from a spouse were significantly related to depression level of the elderly. Their depression level was more related to whether or not sons and daughters-in-law exist rather than whether or not they provide social support. Practical methods to increase family support for the elderly were discussed.

Types III, IV, and V are parents It can be seen that it acts as a guide and an advisor. Finally, we can see that the five commonalities share a minimum parental interest in children.
Family dissolution and economic difficulties of the grandchild's parents are the most prevailing reason for an increase of grandparent-headed families in rural Korea. However, there is a lack of empirical research looking at the experiences of custodial grandmothers, social support, and their psychological well-being. In this regard, this study examined the effect of social support (formal & informal) on the psychological well-being of custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. For this purpose, quantitative and qualitative research methods were conducted. Quantitative data were gathered, using structured questionnaire, from 311 grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren in rural Korea as primary care-givers. Statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS WIN 19.0 programs. Qualitative data were collected by in-depth interviews to 10 custodial grandmothers in rural area. The results of this study are as follows. First, almost half of the parents of the grandchild didn't visit and didn't call anymore. Some relatives -aunt, uncle, etc.- support the grandparent-headed family economically and emotionally. 3/4 of the grandparent-headed families were supported by the government and community. This was not small numbers, but the amount of economic support was low. Second, grandmothers in the study showed quite a high level of depression while their happiness level was relatively low. There were differences in the factors influencing the level of happiness/depression of these rural grandmothers. Overall, the study's results showed the importance of formal & informal support for psychological well-being of the custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. Policy and theoretical implications are discussed.
The purpose of this study was to establish strategies that support multi-cultural children' development and adaptation in day care centers. The subjects were 61 young children, 49 parents from multi-cultural family and 550 Korean young children. The instruments utilized were the Sukemune-Hiew Resilience Test for parents and the Danaka Deveopment Test for children. The statistical instruments used were the t-test and the Pearson product correlation coefficients. Our results indicated that : (1) In the case five or six years old children from multi-cultural families, language development lagged behind that of Korean children. (2) Social support systems were insufficient for parents of multi-cultural families. Our cnclusions suggest that establishing strategies is necessary for not only supporting the linguistic development of children from multi-cultural families, but strategies aimed at supporting their parents in day care centers need to be developed.

Congenital heart disease is now estimated to be the most prevalent chronic illness in children. The overall purpose of study is to enhance our understanding of mother's perception of family stress, perceived social support, and coping who has a child newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease. In this investigation, the relationship between family stress, perceived social support, and coping within the context of a acute, non life- threatening chronic illness in the situation of newly diagnosed as Rolland's typology of chronic illness. The study employed data from a subset of a large longitudinal study, children's chronic illness: parents and family adaptation conducted by M. McCubbin (5 R29 NR02563) which was funded by the NIH. The subject for this study were 92 mothers who have a child under age 12 who was newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease within the last 3-4 months. Results form correlational and regression analysis revealed that perceived social support operated as a resiliency factor between family stress and coping of mothers. Child and family characteristics appeared to be important predictors of perceived social support and mother's coping. Therefore, the findings provide an incremental contribution to the explanation of effects for perceived social support and may challenge resiliency model in previous literature. Further, these findings suggest that perceived social support and coping are both influencing in the resiliency of relatively high risk groups of families who has a child with congenital heart disease.
This study investigated the relation between stressful life events and adjustment in elementary school children, with particular emphasis on the potential main and stress-buffering effects of social support and social problem solving skills. 4-6 graders (N=170) completed the Social Support Appraisals Scale(SSAS) and social problem solving skills task. The SSAS is a 31-item measure that taps the child's perceptions or appraisals of family, peer, and teacher support. Their parents provided ratings of stress in the child's environment and ratings of the child's behavioral adjustment. Teachers provided ratings of the child's behavioral and academic adjustment. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses and graphic display were used to analyze the data. The major findings were that (1) The results for parent-rated problems supported a stress-buffering model for family support and problem solving. (2) The results for teacher-rated problems were consistent with the stress-buffering model of social support. (3) The results for grade-point average supported a main effect model for problem solving. peer support, and family support. In addition, teacher support had the strongest stress-buffering effect on grade-point average.
