Adaptive Block Truncation Coding Based on Gradient Information (경사도를 이용한 적응 구획 절단 부호화)

  • We proposed an adaptive block truncation coding(BTC) using gradient and a new initial value. We used gradient of sobel operator as a new category classification coefficient to reduce Jagged appearance at edge part. We defined a new initial value to reduce large quantization error in the 4-level quantizer block including edge part. By computer simulations, we showed that the proposed method less computation load, reduced jagged appearance at edge part, also improved PSNR more than the conventional adaptive BTC.

  • Edge has been utilized in various application fields with development of technique of digital image processing. In conventional edge detection methods, there are some methods using mask including Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts and Laplacian operator. Those methods are that implement is simple but generates errors of edge detection in images added AWGN(additive white Gaussian noise). Therefore, to compensate the defect of those methods, in this paper, an edge detection algorithm using modified mask is proposed, and it showed superior edge detection property in AWGN.

  • An edge includes information of objects such as magnitude, orientation, and location. Conventional edge detection methods to detect those edge are methods using Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, Laplacian operator. Existing methods use fixed weighted mask to detect edges, and their edge detection characteristics are insufficient. Therefore, to remedy weakness of conventional methods, in this paper, an edge detection algorithm using weight with standard deviation and thresholds is proposed.

Recognition of a Close Leading Vehicle Using the Contour of the Vehicles Wheels (차량 뒷바퀴 윤곽선을 이용한 근거리 전방차량인식)

  • This paper describes a method for detecting a close leading vehicle using the contour of the vehi-cles rear wheels. The contour of a leading vehicles rear wheels in 속 front road image from a B/W CCD camera mounted on the central front bumper of the vehicle, has vertical components and can be discerned clearly in contrast to the road surface. After extracting positive edges and negative edges using the Sobel op-erator in the raw image, every point that can be recognized as a feature of the contour of the leading vehicle wheel is determined. This process can detect the presence of a close leading vehicle, and it is also possible to calculate the distance to the leading vehicle and the lateral deviation angle. This method might be useful for developing and LSA (Low Speed Automation) system that can relieve drivers stress in the stop-and-go traffic conditions encoun-tered on urban roads.

Image Processing Algorithms for Non-destructive Testing

  • In this study, an image processing algorithm was developed to increase readability of the images of specific parts of a KTX train acquired by using a mobile digital radiographic testing device in a situation where a running train is stopped. The image processing algorithm was realized by using a Visual C++ development tool. The algorithm developed in this study allows to select an interested region in the acquired images when the interested region is suspected to cause a problem, and applies a thinning process based Sobel operators to the selected region. The experimental results show that the readability of defect parts that are not visible to naked eyes was increased through edge detector. Application of the algorithm developed in this study may help to accurately read non-destructive inspection images.

  • 본 논문에서는 영상 처리 방법을 이용하여 주어진 객체의 실세계 좌표를 나타내는 특징점을 인식하는 한 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법에서는 육면체 형상의 객체를 대상으로 하며, 이러한 객체 영상의 주요한 특징점은 육면체를 결정짓는 꼭지점들로 이루어진다. 제안된 방법은 CCD 카메라로부터 영상을 획득하는 영상 획득 모듈, 획득된 영상에 대하여 관심 영역을 찾는 영상 분할 모듈, 분할된 관심 영역에 대하여 sobel operator등을 이용하여 경계 정보를 검출하는 영상 처리 모듈, 그리고 세선화, line fitting과정을 통하여 직선 벡터들을 검출한 후에 객체의 주요한 특징점을 인식하는 모듈로 구성된다.

  • Generally, we can't acquire clear boundary or area from an image having obscure boundary like allergy image by using Sobel or Lapalace operator. Also, when the image not uniform in some part of a image in brightness, there are difficulties to use the global operator such as histogram, for the contour line doesn't have the same grey level. In this paper, we will propose an algorithm to improve those difficulties. The main idea of the algorithm is that we divide the image into many rectangular parts like a chess board, calculate the average of each part, and decide the local threshold for each pixel on the calculated value. In experiment, we can get the contour and area by this algorithm which is much like to the contour and area measured by a doctor. Also, This algorithm has many advantages such as short processing time and little influences of noises and can be used in the robot vision, etc..

Detection of Edges in Color Images

  • Edge detection considers the important technical details of digital image processing. Many edge detection operators already perform edge detection in digital color imaging. In this study, the edge of many real color images that represent the type of digital image was detected using a new operator in the least square approximation method, which is a type of numerical method. The Linear Fitting algorithm is computationally more expensive compared to the Canny, LoG, Sobel, Prewitt, HIS, Fuzzy, Parametric, Synthetic and Vector methods, and Robert' operators. The results showed that the new method can detect an edge in a digital color image with high efficiency compared to standard methods used for edge detection. In addition, the suggested operator is very useful for detecting the edge in a digital color image.

  • The edge, a discontinuity or abrupt change in the gray-level or color, is a fundamentally important primitive feature of an image necessary for the image analysis and classification. Two-dimensional 3x3 compass gradient operators (ex. Sobel, Prewitt, and Kirsch operators)are commonly used in the edge detection and usually detect 8 compass directional components. In this paper, we present a new interpretation of the relationships between the resulting 8 gradient magnitudes and the 8 intensity values of neighboring pixels which are covered by the two-dimensional 3x3 mask. It is expected that a new gradient edge operator may be designed by changing the eigenvalues in the transform domain and the fast optical edge operator may be implemented by using the optical system.
