  • This paper presents a zero voltage and zero current switching (ZVZCS) interleaving two-transistor forward converter for high input voltage and high power application. A phase shift has a disadvantage that a circulating current and RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices increases. Due to this circulating current and RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices increases. To alleviate these problems, we propose an improved interleaving two-transistor forward Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switching (ZVZCS) dc/dc converter using a tapped inductor a snubber capacitor and two snubber diodes attached at the secondary side of transformer. The proposed ZVZCS converter is verified on a 1.8kW, 5kHz experimental prototype.

  • The construction technology for reactor vessel internals (RVI) modularization is one of the most important factors to be considered in reducing the construction period of nuclear power plants. For RVI modularization, gaps between the reactor vessel (RV) core-stabilizing lug and the core support barrel (CSB) snubber lug must be measured using a remote method from outside the RV. In order to measure RVI gaps remotely at nuclear power plant construction sites, certain core technologies must be developed and verified. These include a remote measurement system to measure the gaps between the RV core-stabilizing lug and the CSB snubber lug, an RVI mockup to perform the gap measurement tests, and a new procedure and schedule for RVI installation. A remote measurement system was developed previously, and a gap measurement test was completed successfully using the RVI mockup. We also developed a new procedure and schedule for RVI installation. This paper presents the new and improved installation procedure and schedule for RVI modularization. These are expected to become core technologies that will allow us to shorten the construction period by a minimum of two months compared to the existing installation procedure and schedule.

  • Conventional phase shift full bridge (PSFB) converter has serious voltage oscillation problem across the secondary rectifier diodes, which would require the dissipate snubber circuit, thus degrades the overall efficiency. To overcome this problem, a new voltage oscillation reduction technique (VORT) which effectively reduce the voltage oscillation of the secondary rectifier diodes for phase shift 1011 bridge converter is proposed. Therefore, no dissipate snubber for rectifier diodes is needed. In addition, since it has wide zero voltage switching (ZVS) range, high efficiency can be achieved. Operational principle, analysis of voltage oscillation, and design consideration are presented compare with that of the conventional PSFB converter. To confirm the validity of the proposed VORT, experimental results from a 420W, 385Vdc/210Vdc prototype are presented.

  • In this study, an efficient clamp is proposed to reduce the switch voltage stress of a forward converter. The proposed clamp consists of a conventional LC snubber, a tertiary winding, and a diode. When the switch is turned OFF, the magnetizing inductor energy of the transformer is recovered directly into the flyback output, which is the tertiary winding and diode network, instead of circulating in the LC snubber. Therefore, switch voltage stress and circulating current caused by the magnetizing inductor energy are reduced. This condition improves the efficiency of the forward converter with limited switch voltage stress. A theoretical analysis and the design guidelines of the proposed converter are provided. Experimental results are also reported.

  • This paper presents a soft switching converter to achieve the functions of zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on for the power switches and dc voltage step-up. Two circuit modules are connected in parallel in order to achieve load current sharing and to reduce the size of the transformer core. An active snubber is connected between two transformers in order to absorb the energy stored in the leakage and magnetizing inductances and to limit the voltage stresses across the switches. During the commutation stage of the two complementary switches, the output capacitance of the two switches and the leakage inductance of the transformers are resonant. Thus, the power switches can be turned on under ZVS. No output filter inductor is used in the proposed converter and the voltage stresses of the output diodes is clamped to the output voltage. The circuit configuration, the operation principles and the design considerations are presented. Finally, laboratory experiments with a 340W prototype, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed converter, are described.

  • The piping system of a power plant suffers not only thermal expansion according to the temperature variation, but also many kinds of load: steady state vibrations due to the equipment operation or fluid flow, and transient vibrations due to the earthquake or explosion, etc. The snubbers are usually installed on the piping system to allow thermal expansion, and to reduce dynamic responses. Most snubbers are kinds of hydraulic and mechanical type, which can be degraded by leakage and abrasion, and required much cost for maintenance and replacement. Recently the wire rope type snubbers are developed and applied to the power plant, and proved as effective to reduce piping system vibration. Wire rope type snubber uses the bending rigidity and energy dissipation properties of ropes. This paper presents the procedure of design, and the method to apply hysteresis curve to the dynamic response analysis. Experiments were also conducted to confirm design results.

  • This paper studies a novel boost DC-DC converter operated high efficiency for discontinuous current mode (DCM) control. The converter worked in DCM eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement, reduces a number of components, and reduces the used reactive components size. In the general DCM converter, the switching devices are turned-on the zero current switching (ZCS), and the switching devices must be switched-off at a maximum reactor current. To achieve the zero voltage switching (ZVS) at the switching turn-off, the proposed converter is constructed by using a new loss-less snubber circuit. Soft-switched operation of the proposed boost converter is verified by digital simulation and experimental results. A new boost converter achieves the soft-switching for all switching devices without increasing their voltage and current stresses. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of boost DC-DC converter is high.

  • The conventional three-level high frequency phase-shifted dc/dc converter has a disadvantage that a circulating current flows through transformer and switching devices during the freewheeling interval.. Due to this circulating current and RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices increases. To alleviate these problems, we propose an improved three-level Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switching (ZVZCS) dc/dc converter using a tapped inductor, a snubber capacitor and two snubber diodes attached at the secondary side of transformer. The proposed ZVZCS converter is verified on a 7㎾, 30KHz experimental prototype.

It results in not only decreasing switching loss in the device drastically, but also improving input ac current waveform distortion. The computer simulation results show that the input current waveform and show the requirements necessary for the elimination of the 3rd harmonic component. We also show the Procedure to design the parameters of the converter.
