A Systematic Review and Meta-Analytic Study of Programs for the Problems of Smartphone Addiction in Korean Youth: Focusing on Anxiety, Depression, Impulsiveness, Self-control, Self-esteem and Smartphone Addiction (국내 아동 대상 스마트폰 중독 중재 프로그램의 체계적 고찰 및 메타분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and the meta-analytic study was to examine the effectiveness of the interventions for smartphone addiction problems in youth on alleviating their levels of anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, self-control, self-esteem, and smartphone addiction. Methods: Relevant literature was searched from six electronic databases, and studies were searched by rigor PICOS framework. A total of 31 studies were included for the meta-analysis, which met the inclusion criteria of this study. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.0 was used for analysis. Results: Overall effect size of the intervention was Hedges' g 1.02 (95% CI: 0.86~1.17), which was a large effect size with a statistical significance. The effect sizes of the outcome variables were significant. Self-control showed the largest effect sizes (g=1.73), followed by smartphone addiction (g=1.49), self-esteem (g=0.99), impulsiveness (g=0.82), anxiety (g=0.77), and depression (g=0.67). Interventions targeting smaller groups showed a higher effect size than larger groups. Conclusion: This study indicates that the interventions targeting Korean youths can reduce anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, self-control, self-esteem, and smartphone addiction of Korean youth. This study can provide evidence for further interventions to prevent smartphone addiction and related programs in Korean youths.

The Effect of Use Motives, Self-Control and Social Withdrawal on Smartphone Addiction (이용 동기와 자기 통제력 및 사회적 위축이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향)

  • Despite the ever-increasing smartphone addiction of adolescents and a variety of consequent problems not much research has been conducted on the issue. It is time to prepare a set of countermeasures to protect them from the addiction. The central purpose of the current paper is to identify how use motives, self-control and social withdrawal affect their smartphone addiction. It was found (i) that the motives of information acquisition, social relationship, amusement and use of leisure time exert significant influence on smartphone addiction, (ii) that less self-control and greater impulsiveness result in greater addiction, and (iii) that social withdrawal of users also have significant effect on smartphone addiction. Such findings are expected to provide base data for any attempt to develop countermeasures against addiction. It is desirable that we had better check the play activities of adolescents and develop self-control programs to help them alleviate impulsiveness than simply impose strict restrictions on the use of smartphones.

The relationships among interpersonal relationship anxiety, college adjustment, self-control, and smartphone addiction in nursing students (간호대학생의 대인관계불안, 대학생활적응, 자기통제와 스마트폰 중독의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the relationships among interpersonal relationship anxiety, college adjustment, self-control, and smartphone addiction in nursing students. Collecting data from 173 nursing students, we carried out t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using IBM SPSS Statistics 19. The significant predictors of smartphone addiction in nursing students have been indentified to be smartphone use time and self-control, accounting for 34.0% of the variability. The results suggest that an effective approach to prevent smartphone addiction for nursing students needs to consider how to decrease smartphone time and also needs to develop ways to enhance self-control and interpersonsal relationship.

  • Smart building gate security control system using smartphone integrated with near field communication (NFC) has become part of daily life usage these days. The technology change in replacing RF NFC device using visible light communication technology based approach growing faster in recent days. This paper propose a design and development of gate security control system using color code based user authentication ID generation as part of an intelligent access control system to control automatic door open and close. In this approach gate security access control use the recent visible light communication technology trends to transfer the user specific authentication code to door access control system using color code on smartphone screen. Using a camera in the door access control system (ACS), color codes on smartphone screens are detected and matched to the database of authenticated user to open the door automatically in gate security system. We measure the visual light communication technology efficiency as a part of the research and the experiments have revealed that more than 95% users authenticated correctly at the suggested experiment environment on gate security control system.

Physical activity level, sleep quality, attention control and self-regulated learning along to smartphone addiction among college students (대학생의 스마트폰 중독정도에 따른 신체활동량, 수면의 질, 주의력 조절 및 자기조절학습)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate physical activity level, sleep quality, attention control, and self-regulated learning along to smartphone addiction level among college students. The data were obtained from 269 college students by structured questionnaire, analyzed using SPSS 18.0. The results showed that significant differences with smartphone addictoin level and, gender, grade level, daily using time, physical activity level, sleep quality and attention control. Smartphone addictoin level have correlations with physical activity level, sleep quality, attention control, and self-regulated learning. To prevent the falling off of physical strength and poor school performance, it is needed a strategies for control of smartphone addiction.

Effectiveness of Smartphone Addiction Intervention for University Students: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis (대학생 스마트폰 중독 중재프로그램의 효과: 체계적 문헌고찰 및 메타분석)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of smartphone addiction interventions among university students. Selection criteria included university students, smartphone addiction interventions, smartphone addiction, depression, anxiety, self-control and time of smartphone usage. A total of 915 articles were retrieved. From those, 15 studies from 13 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis showed that smartphone addiction interventions undergone by university students had statistical significance in alleviating smartphone addiction (d=-1.57, 95% CI:-2.84, -0.30), depression (d=-3.73, 95% CI:-4.97, -2.48), and self-control (d=7.28, 95% CI:2.76, 11.79); but were not significantly effective in improving anxiety and reducing time of smartphone usage. The systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that smartphone addiction interventions boost the alleviation of smartphone addiction. However, it remains necessary to conduct well-designed randomized controlled trials, including the consideration of various cultural characteristics.

Effect of psychological separation, self-control, college satisfaction on the smartphone addiction of nursing students (간호대학생의 심리적 분리, 자기통제력, 학교만족도가 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of psycological separation, self-control, college satisfaction of smartphone addiction in nursing students. Data were collected from 201 nursing students in B city and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 22.0. The degree of smartphone addiction in nursing students was 2.23±.58. There were significant differences in smartphone addiction with respect to alcohol drinking(t=2.530, p=.012), smoking(t=2.302, p=.022), study-time(t=6.036, p=.001), smartphone average daily using time(t=6.036, p=.001). There was negative correlation between smartphone addiction and self-control(r=-.443, p<.001), college satisfaction(r=-.210, p=.033). The factors affecting smartphone addiction of the study subjects were self-control(𝛽=-.355, p<.001), smartphone average daily using time(𝛽=.231, p<.001), smorking(𝛽=-.132, p=.033), with an explanatory power of 27.5%. Through this research requires the fellow study to determine the factors affecting smartphone addiction of nursing students.

Effects of smartphone on self-directed learning ability by mediation of self-control : Does it matter when to start using smartphone for the first time? (스마트폰 사용이 자기통제력의 매개를 통해 자기주도학습능력에 미치는 영향 : 스마트폰 최초 사용시점에 따른 비교)

  • The aims of this study are to analyse how smartphone affects (1)self-control and (2)self-directed learning ability of middle-school students, and also affect (3)self-directed learning ability by mediation of self-control. For these aims, this study used Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study panel data which was conducted in 2015, and conducted multi-group comparisons using structural equation modeling analyses. In analysis of smartphone effects, the use of smartphone of students was divided into 'for entertainment' and 'for learning', and also their first time of smartphone use was considered(elementary vs. middle school). Results indicated that while 'smarphone use for entertainment' was related negatively with self-control and self-directed learning ability of students, 'smarphone use for learning' was related positively, regardless of when smartphone was first used. Also, while 'smarphone use for entertainment' was related negatively with self-directed learning ability by mediation of self-control, 'smarphone use for learning' was related positively.

Development of a Smartphone Controlled Personal Mobility System (PMS) with Semi-autonomous Navigation (스마트폰 제어기반의 반자율 네비게이션을 갖춘 개인용 이동 시스템 구현)

  • In this paper, a smartphone-controlled personal mobility system (PMS) with semi-autonomous navigation is developed. The proposed PMS moves to waypoints and then reaches the destination where the waypoints and destination are selected by the user using Google maps in a smartphone. The hardware environment consists of a GPS (Global Positioning System) in the smartphone and a compass sensor. In addtion, while it is moving in autonomous mode, the user can intervene and change the direction and speed of the PMS in order to avoid obstacles that may be encountered accidentally in a dynamic environment. That is why it is called "semi-autonomous navigation". Experimental results showed that the proposed PMS is effectively able to migrate to the waypoints and destination in both autonomous and manual modes.

Factors Influencing Smartphone Addiction in High School Students in B city (B시 고등학생의 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose of this study was conducted to investigate the factors influencing smartphone addiction of high school students. The data were collected from 351 high school students in B city and analyzed with t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression by using SPSS 18.0 program. The smartphone addiction rate was 20.8%, which the high risk group rate was 8.5% and potential risk group rate was 12.3%. The significant factors of smartphone addiction were using time in weekend, accident in using smartphone, aggression, depression, attachment to peer and behavior control of learning attitude. And these factors explained 33.4% of the variance in smartphone addiction. In conclusion, the results from this study indicated a need to develop the intervention program to prevent smartphone addiction.
