  • The promise of biomimetic smart structures that can function as sensors and actuators in biomedicine is enormous. Technological development in the field of stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers have opened up a new avenue of applications for polymer-based synthetic actuators. Such synthetic actuators mimic various attributes of living organisms including responsiveness to stimuli, shape memory, selectivity, motility, and organization. This article briefly reviews various stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers and their application as bioactuators. Although the technological advancements have prototyped the potential applications of these smart materials, their widespread commercialization depends on many factors such as sensitivity, versatility, moldability, robustness, and cost.

  • With the rapid development and diffusion of smart phone applications, mobile users are able to use various useful mobile services in humdrum life. Especially, interesting applications like QR code using camera module in a smart phone are developed continuously nowadays. We realized that the size and shape of shooting objects taken by a smart phone camera module are very different according to their types and versions of the android-based smart phone in the process of developing applications for measuring the shooting object using camera module of a smart phone. In this paper, we investigate the major differences among smart phone types and system versions when we take specific object with camera module of smart phones, analyze the various characteristics of camera modules that influencing the real size of the shooting object taken by a smart phone, and apply them to the development of the smart camruler application.

  • With the 4th industrial revolution, the traditional logistics is shifting to the smart logistics, and it has led to rapid growth of logistics startup companies to support smart logistics. They build their mobile applications and customize their services in the areas of freight transport, parcel delivery services, freight tracking, on-demand logistics, transport intermediary platforms, online-to-offline business, and last mile delivery. In order for logistics startup to be successful, it should lead to sales and profit through customer satisfaction and continuous use by developing highly usable mobile applications. The evaluation of usability of mobile application should use different evaluation criteria from Web based applications because of the inherent characteristics of mobile phone. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usability of the mobile application provided by the logistics startup and to draw out implications and improvement plans. Through the literature review, we will review the concept of smart logistics. Thus we derive the usability criteria suitable for mobile applications and perform usability testing.

  • In this paper, we applied user-centered context to Smart Home Applications. Current research activities on smart home have just focused on the infrastructure without considering user's contexts and implementation cost. We first realized the user-centered personalized services using ubi-UCAM (a Unified Context-aware Application Model), which exploited contexts from various kinds of smart sensors. We, then, verified its usefulness in the ubiquitous computing-enabled home environment. It can be extended to various application areas since it guarantees independence between sensors and services. Accordingly, it will play a key role in future smart home environment.

  • Recently, metamaterials attracted much attention because of the potential applications for superlens, cloaking and high precision sensors. We developed several dielectric metamaterials for enhancing antireflection or light trapping capability in solar energy harvesting devices. Colloidal lithography and electrochemical anodization process were employed to fabricate self-assembed nano- and microscale dielectric metamaterials in a simple and cost-effective manner. We improved broadband light absorption in c-Si, a-Si, and organic semiconductor layer by employing polystyrene (PS) islands integrated Si conical-frustum arrays, resonant PS nanosphere arrays, and diffusive alumina nanowire arrays, respectively. We also demonstrated thin metal coated alumina nanowire array which is utilized as an efficient light-to-heat conversion layer of solar steam generating devices. The scalable design and adaptable fabrication route to our light management nanostructures will be promising in applications of solar energy harvesting system. On the other hands, broadband invisible cloaks, which continuously work while elastically deforming, are developed using smart metamaterials made of photonic and elastic crystals. A self-adjustable, nearly lossless, and broadband (10-12GHz) smart meatamaterials have great potentials for applications in antenna system and military stealth technology.

  • This study is a basic study for developing a mathematical learning application program that can be used in smart devices for adaptive learning. We selected 20 mathematical learning applications including middle school contents and analyzed learning types. And we analyzed the contents and the learning process. As a result, most learning types of mathematics learning applications were problem-centered. Contents analysis results showed that the most applications have achievement goals. The factors that induce interest in learning were lacking and feedback was not provided sufficiently. Analysis of the learning process showed that most of the math learning applications were classified according to their purpose and characteristics.

  • This study has attempted to examine the socio-cultural implications of the using form and environment of smart phone and applications from the viewpoint of media-ecology studies. In so doing, this paper analysed the types of applications in SKT's application market T-store and in-depth interview on smart phone users. According to the study results, smart phone users organize mobile culture with individual curiosity and a desire for novelty depending on their personal tendencies and interest. Also, they use smart phone and applications as a sort of new complex mobile media and prescribe the role of smart phone and applications as their second body replacing themselves in a space using mobile. It means that new paradigm for a space using mobile could be formed by having created new space for communication through the mobile media.

  • Various types of smart dust based on photonic crystal exhibiting unique reflectivity were successfully obtained by an electrochemical etching of silicon wafer using square wave currents. Smart dust containing Bragg structure obtained from the sonication of DBR porous silicon film in solution retained its optical reflectivity. Field emission scanning electron micrograph (FE-SEM) was used to measure the size of optically encoded smart dust and its size can be tuned from few hundred nanometers to few microns depending on the duration of sonication. Optical characteristics of smart dust were used to investigate a possible applications such as chemical sensors.
