The experimental group received foot reflexology twice a week for 4 weeks. The results were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, and ANCOVA with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The results showed that foot reflexology was statistically significantly effective in reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression and in improving the quality of sleep as evidenced by differences between two groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that foot reflexology is an effective nursing intervention in reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression, and improving the quality of sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to develop foot reflexology as an independent nursing intervention for elderly women with osteoarthritis in community.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of laughter therapy on arthralgia, ankylosis, depression and sleep of elderly housebound women suffering from osteoarthritis. Methods: The study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 48 elderly women: 23 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The experimental group received laughter therapy twice a week for 4 weeks. The results were analyzed by using $X^2$-test, ANCOVA, and t-test with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The results showed that laughter therapy had a significant statistical effective in reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression and improving the quality of sleep as evidenced by the differences between the two groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that laughter therapy is an effective nursing intervention reducing arthralgia, ankylosis, and depression and improving the quality of sleep in these women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop laughter therapy as an independent nursing intervention for elderly women with osteoarthritis who are housebound.
Objective: This study was conducted to verify the effectiveness of a cognitive rehabilitation program consisting of physical exercises and mental activities for patients with chronic stroke with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We aimed to investigate how this cognitive rehabilitation program affects patients' cognitive ability, depression, and sleep quality. Design: One group pretest-posttest design Methods: The study was conductedon 12 patients who participated in thecognitive rehabilitation complex exercise program for 16 weeks. The Korean version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-K), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (K-HDRS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to evaluate the measured variables before and after study participation. The cognitive rehabilitation complex exercise program included 30 minutes of cognitive exercise and 30 minutes of Brill Exercise. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the variables before and after program participation. Cronbach's ɑ was used to assess the reliability of the test variables. Results: The post-program assessment showed a statistically significant increase in the MoCA-K score, which measures cognitive function (Z=-2.628, P=0.009). For depression ratings, there was a statistically significant decrease in the K-HDRS score (Z=-2.041, P=0.041). For sleep quality, although there was a numerical increase in the PSQI score, the difference was not statistically significant (Z=-0.702, P=0.483). The reliability test confirmed that all the individual test variables exhibited high reliability (cognitive function, 0.859; depression, 0.872; sleep, 0.822). Conclusions: We found that cognitive rehabilitation program used in this study had a positive effect on the cognitive function and depression in patients with chronic stroke with MCI.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of aroma foot massage and reflexology on sleep, depression and problem behaviors on elderly with dementia. Methods: The study was a none equivalent control group pre-post test quasi-experimental design. The participants were 62 elderly with mild mentia. Using a coin toss, 31 participants were assigned to the experimental group and 31 to the control group. The aroma reflex foot massage comprised of aroma foot massage and foot reflexology. The intervention was conducted twice a week for six weeks. Results: There were significant differences in reported sleep and depression between the two groups. However, the issue of problem behaviors was not significant. Conclusion: Aroma reflex foot massage can be utilized as an effective intervention for sleep and depression in conjunction with drug therapy for the management of elderly with mild dementia.
Objectives : To evaluate the effects of aroma hand massage on sleep disturbance and depression in hospitalized elderly patients. Methods : The data was collected using questionnaires from the subjects who were admitted to the G Medical Hospital in Daegu from 7 July to 12 July, 2008. A total of 23 subjects were selected. The subjects were applied with the aroma hand massage to both hands using a solution diluting four drops of lavender oil in jojoba oil 10cc. Aroma hand massage was given for 10 minutes, one time a day, during 5 days. Results : There was statistically significant improvement on the Korean sleep scale(t=-7.614, p=0.000) and on the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Korea Version(GDSSF-K)(t=3.444, p=0.002). Conclusions : aroma hand massage is an effective therapeutic intervention for decreased sleep disturbance and depression. Therefore, aroma therapy and hand massage by therapeutic intervention is recommended for improving psychological and physiological functions in hospitalized elderly patients.
The purpose of study was to investigate the impacts of social isolation, psychological acceptance, and sleep disorder on depression among nursing students. Subjects were 383 nursing students in Gyeonggi-do, and survey was conducted from June to July 2015. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis. The results showed that depression was different in grade, academic stress, major satisfaction of nursing. Depression was correlated with social isolation (r=.47, p<.001), sleep disorder (r=.43, p<.001), and psychological acceptance (r=-.41, p<.001). Academic stress, major satisfaction of nursing, sleep disorder, social isolation, and psychological acceptance were identified as factors affecting depression. It is necessary to be considered social isolation, psychological acceptance, sleep disorder and other variables in developing convergence program to reduce depression in nursing students.
This study focuses on the sleep pattern of the elderly people living in the community and its relationship to the occurrences of the depression and deterioration of the cognitive function. Our primary data is the raw data gathered by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2008 in the National Senior Living Conditions and Well-being Needs Assessment Survey. The survey contained data from 12,087 people over 65 years of age living in the community. We have used the secondary data analysis method on this raw data to see if there exists correlation between age, gender, soundness of the sleep, total sleep time and the depression and the cognitive difficulties. Our study finds that the older a person is, the more trouble she has in sleeping. It also shows that too much sleep (in excess of 9 hours) and too little sleep (less than 6 hours) can both be linked to more occurrence of depression. Lack of restful sleep could also be linked to more frequent occurrence of depression and cognitive difficulties. Changes in the sleep pattern is not always pathological in elderly people. However, our study shows that it is important the primary health-care givers understand the role of sleep in elderly person's daily life. They should examine the elderly person's sleep pattern focusing on the quantity and the quality of sleep and develop programs suited for individuals to prevent and intervene sleep disorder.

This study was conducted to investigate the level of depression in the elderly after stroke and to determine the relationship between sleep quality and post stroke depression. The study participants were 110 elderly people aged 60 or older who visited the physical therapy room after stroke, and the survey was conducted from August to November 2020. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis were performed for data analysis. As a result, 77.3% (85 patients) of the participants were depressed. The factor influencing on depression was the quality of sleep, and the explanatory power was 27.8%. It was confirmed that the sleep quality of the elderly after a stroke was a major influencing factor on depression. Therefore, it is thought that measures to improve the quality of sleep should be prepared in order to reduce the post stroke depression of the elderly.
