Purpose : The purpose of this research is to measure the correlations among sleep quality, depression and department satisfaction in the students enrolled in the nursing college located in the B city. Method : 268 students enrolled in the nursing college located in the B city participated in this research from the 1st May 2016 to the 31st May 2016. SPSS 18.0 was applied to the collected data to calculate the frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation. In addition, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for the analysis. Result : The result of the average sleep quality, depression and department satisfaction in the nursing college students were measured to be $2.41{\pm}0.57$, $3.59{\pm}0.50$ and $3.56{\pm}0.57$ respectively. The sleep quality based on the general characteristics indicated a significant difference when applied to the health status(F=4.46, p=.012). The depression indicated a significant difference when applied to the living with parents(t=-2.18, p=.030) and relationship with friends(F=8.62, p=.000). The department satisfaction indicated a significant difference when applied to the grade(F=3.45, p=.017), personality(F=3.46, p=.033), and reason for applying for their department(F=2.49, p=.044). As a result of analyzing the correlations among sleep quality, depression and department satisfaction in the nursing college students, the sleep quality indicated a negative correlation with the depression(r=-.528, p=.000) and a positive correlation with the department satisfaction(r=.144, p=.018). The depression indicated a negative correlation with the department satisfaction(r=.119, p=.051). Conclusion : It is necessary to conduct a replication research by increasing the number of the research subjects. In addition, it is necessary to conduct a systematic research on the factors influential on sleep quality, depression and department satisfaction in order to develop a program capable of enhancing the sleep quality and decreasing the depression.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors contributing to sleep disorders in patients on hemodialysis. Methods: A descriptive correlational study design was used. The participants were 135 patients on hemodialysis in hemodialysis clinics. Data were collected from March to May 2007 using structured questionnaires and hematologic sample. Stepwise multiple regression was used to identify factors influencing sleep disorders among the demographic-clinical factors, depression and fatigue. Results: About 69% of the patients had a sleep disorders. There were significant differences in sleep disorders according to marital status, caregiver, religion, economic level, insurance, erythropoietin, somnifacient, and antihypertensive agents. But there were no differences according to age, gender, dialysis period, or antidepressants. Their sleep disorders had significant correlations with depression, and fatigue, and a significant negative correlation with Protein, Albumin, Phosphate and BUN. But there were no correlations with hematocrit, hemoglobin, creatinine, sodium, potassium, or calcium. Depression and fatigue were factors influencing sleep disorders. They accounted for 43.8% of the variance in sleep disorders in these patients. Conclusion: Findings provide an understanding of sleep disorders and the factors that are an influence in patients on hemodialysis. To promote sleep in these patients, nursing interventions to manage depression and fatigue are needed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences of sleep quality, fatigue and depression between school lessons and clinical practicum term in nursing students. Methods: This study was conducted through a survey on 84 $4^{th}$ grade nursing students. Data collection was conducted from April to June, 2015. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing sleep quality, fatigue and depression. Data were analyzed by the SPSS/WIN 21.0 using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, ANOVAs, Pearson's correlations and multiple regression. Results: The mean scores of fatigue and depression during the school lesson were significantly high compared to those of the clinical practicum. On the contrary, the score of sleep quality did not showed difference. Sleep quality showed negative correlations with fatigue and depression respectively, and fatigue showed positive correlation with depression. Subjective health status was the influential factor predicting fatigue and depression after school lessons, and subjective health status and major satisfaction were the influential factors predicting fatigue and depression after clinical practicum term. Conclusions: Nursing students showed different characteristics between school lessons and clinical practicum term. Thus, it is essential to identify physical and psychological problems and related factors respectively, then to devise appropriate programs to improve nursing curriculums.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects of a lettuce-based sleep promotion program on sleep, depression, and life satisfaction of the elderly in the community. Methods: Data collection was conducted from April 19 to May 28, 2021, and 49 elderly people with sleep disorders over the age of 60 living in G province. This study evaluated the nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and depression based on the sleep duration of adult women using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016 and 2018. A total of 4,507 subjects were divided into two groups: sleep hours<7 (lack of sleep, LS) and 7≤sleep hours (normal sleep, NS). For a more detailed analysis, the subjects were further divided into normal sleep with no depression (NSND) and lack of sleep with depression (LSWD) groups. When compared with NS group, the nutrient intake of the LS group was observed to be higher in carbohydrates (P<0.05) and thiamine (P<0.01), but had a significantly lower mean nutrient adequacy ratio (P<0.05). Also, the LS group showed a higher frequency of early menopause (P<0.001) and depression (P<0.05) than the NS group. In the analysis of anthropometry and blood parameters of the subjects based on their sleep duration, the LS group showed a lower body mass index (BMI, P<0.05), lower blood creatinine (P<0.01), glycated hemoglobin (P<0.05), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (P<0.01) levels adjusted by age and menopause than the NS group. When compared to the NSND group, the LSWD group had a lower intake of cholesterol (P<0.05), vitamin A (P<0.05), vitamin C (P<0.05), and folic acid (P<0.05). There was no variation in the menopausal status, NAR, and mean nutrient adequacy ratio between the NSND and LSWD groups. However, there were differences in total blood cholesterol (P<0.05) and depression based on sleep duration. Apart from nutritional status, differences in BMI and blood parameters were observed based on sleep duration.
Purpose: Sleep onset association disorder (SOAD) is a form of behavioral insomnia observed in children that is caused by inappropriate sleep training. SOAD typically disturbs the sleep of not only infants and children but also their parents. We investigated levels of depression and marital intimacy among parents of infants with typical SOAD, to understand the influence of SOAD on family dynamics, as well as examine ways for improving depression and marital intimacy through behavioral training. Methods: Depression and marital intimacy were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Waring Intimacy Questionnaire (WIQ). These measures were administered to 65 parents of infants (n=50) diagnosed with SOAD. We conducted sleep education and behavioral training for the parents and compared levels of depression and marital intimacy after 2-6 weeks of training. Results: The 65 parents consisted of 50 mothers and 15 fathers. Depressive symptoms were higher among mothers than fathers (P=0.007). Marital intimacy was negatively correlated with depressive symptoms. Twenty-six parents were assessed again after sleep training. We found that mothers' depressive symptoms and marital intimacy improved post training. Conclusion: SOAD can be detrimental to both infants and parents, especially for parents who sleep with their infants. For instance, disruption of sleep patterns in such parents can reduce marital intimacy. However, behavioral modification is an effective treatment for infants with frequent nighttime waking, as well as for diminishing the depressive symptoms of sleep-deprived parents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among depression, sleep patterns and health promoting behavior in female college students. Methods: The subjects of this study consisted of 350 college students. The data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from November to December of 2004. The data was analyzed via the SPSS computer program by using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: There are significant differences and impacts on depression according to the amount of coffee consumed, the time spent on computer and the amount of smoke inhaled. Sleep patterns differ depending on one's college major, the time spent on computer, and the amount of smoke inhaled. Health promotion behavior was shown to be significantly different according to the living style, college major and how much TV was watched The mean scores for depression, sleep patterns, health promoting behavior were 1.45 (on a 3 points scale), 2.71 (on a 4 points scale), and 3.03 (on a 5 point scale), respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between sleep patterns and health promoting behavior, and there was negative correlation between depression and health promoting behavior, and between depression and sleep patterns in college students. Conclusion: The findings of this study give useful information to create further studies on intervention programs related to health promoting behavior for college female students.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of fatigue, depression and sleep disorders and to find the correlation between them in patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: The participants consisted of 130 patients with chronic liver disease who visited the C University Hospital in Daegu, Korea from July to August, 2011. Data were collected by a self-reporting questionnaire of the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale, Depression Inventory (BDI) and Sleep Scale. Collected data were analyzed by using PASW Statistics 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, T-test, one-way ANOVA and Correlation Analysis. Results: There were significant differences in fatigue scores (t=8.415, $p$=.004) and depression scores (t=10.08, $p$=.002) between subjects with symptoms of liver disease and those with no symptoms. There was no significant difference in sleep disorder scores. In addition, there is a significant correlation between fatigue and depression (r=.641), linking fatigue and sleep disorders (r=.578), and between depression and sleep disorders (r=.572). Conclusion: It is necessary to develop multidisciplinary intervention programs to relieve patientsuffering.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among sleep quality, heart rate variability (HRV), fatigue, depression, and anxiety reported by Korean adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 208 adults aged 20~60 years was conducted using a short-term HRV analysis and self-reported questionnaires of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fatigue Severity Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results: Subjects with good sleep quality (PSQI $score{\leq}5$) had higher HRV total power (t=2.03, p=.043) and high-frequency (t=2.04, p=.043) with lower fatigue (t=-4.08, p<.001), depressive mood (t=-3.66, p<.001), and trait anxiety (t=-3.84, p<.001) than subjects with poor sleep quality. Poor sleep quality was negatively correlated with HRV total power (r=-.17, p=.016), high-frequency (r=-.14, p=.049), and positively fatigue (r=.39, p<.001), depression (r=.44, p<.001), state anxiety (r=.23, p=.001) and trait anxiety (r=.34, p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicated that sleep quality is correlated with HRV which reflects the activities of the autonomic nerve system, fatigue, depression, and anxiety in adults.
