The purpose of this study is to compare the difference in dose and image quality when applying the diagnostic reference level (DRL) test conditions for head radiography in a digital radiation environment and the test conditions currently applied in clinical practice. I would like to review the conditions of radiographic examination. In this study, the head model phantom was targeted, and the investigation conditions were divided into clinical conditions (Clinic), DRL value (DRL75), and DRL average value (DRLmean). For dose, Enterance surface dose (ESD) was measured, and for image quality, signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio were measured and analyzed for comparison. The average values of skull anterior posterior(AP) ESD according to the changes in test conditions were Clinic 1214.03±4.21 µGy, DRL75 3017.83±8.14 µGy, DRLmean 2283.50±7.09 µGy, and skull lateral (Lat). The average value of ESD was statistically significant with Clinic 762.79±3.54 µGy, DRL75 2168.57±10.83 µGy, and DRLmean 1654.43±6.48 µGy (p<0.01). The average values of SNR and CNR measured in the orbital, maxillary sinus, frontal sinus, and sella turcica were statistically significant (p<0.01). As a result of this study, compared to DRL, the conditions used in clinical practice showed lower dose levels of about 58% for AP and about 70% for Lat., and there was no qualitative difference in terms of image quality. Through this study, it is necessary to consider a new diagnostic reference level suitable for the digital radiation environment, and it is considered that the dose should be reduced accordingly.
Low energy x-rays that occur in the low tube voltage radiography of general radiography are absorbed strongly in the body and do not aid image quality enhancement. This study maintains titer in general radiography while using tube current that are proportional to density and the tube voltage 15% principle according to density to reduce patient exposure doses, and area doses and entrance surface doses were measured to compare patient exposure doses. In hand, knee, abdomen, and skull radiography, kVp was increased to 115% and mAs was decreased to 50% and kVp was decreased to 85% while mAs was increased to 200% and area doses and entrance surface doses were measured to compare relative doses. Also, 5 places in each image were set, density was measured, and Kruskal wallis H test was conducted to observe significance probabilities between groups. To fix density, kVp was increased to 115% and mAs was decreased to 50% and after measurements of mean area doses and entrance surface doses were made by each part, each decreased to 58.68% and 59.85% when standard doses were set to 100%, and each increased to 147.28% and 159.9% when kVp was decreased to 85% and mAs was increased to 200%. Comparisons of density changes showed that hand, knee, abdomen, and skull radiography all displayed significance probabilities>0.05, showing no changes in concentration. Radiography that increases kVp and lowers mAs through reasonable calculations within ranges that don't affect resolution and contrast seems to be a simple way to decrease patient exposure doses.
The authors describe the experience with the interactive image-guided Zeiss SMN system, which has been applied to 20 patients with various intracranial lesions during one year. Preoperative radiologic evaluation was CT scan in 6 cases, MRI in 14 cases. In all except one case, average fiducial registration errors were less than 2mm. There was no statistical difference in registration error between CT and MR image. This system considered to be relatively stable with respect to soft and hardware. Also it was useful for the designing of the scalp incision and bone flap and assessing the extent of resection in tumors, especially in gliomas. Moreover, it was helpful to evaluate complex surgical anatomy in skull base surgery.

Shape reconstruction is considered as a new technology to be useful and important in many areas such as RPD (Rapid Product Development) and reverse engineering, compared with the conventional design and manufacturing. In shape reconstruction, it becomes possible to reconstruct objects not by their measured shape data but those data extracted from the original shape. The goal of this research is to realize 3D shape construction by showing a possible way to analyze the input image data and reconstruct that original shape. The main 2 steps of the reconstructing process are getting cross-section data from image processing and linking loops between one slice and the next one. And the reconstructed object in this way is compared with the other object using a laser scanner and modelled by an commercial software.

A study was made primarily to investigate vertical and horizontal distortion of the image at the apical region of the dental roots in orthopantomographs. The subjects consisted of two dry skulls with radiopaque materials attached to root surface. Measuring of the width and length of each predetermined point at 23 teeth was performed in dry skulls and radiographic films. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was overall magnification of image in the vertical dimension. And anterior portion had greater magnification rate than posterior portion, while lower anterior portion had less magnification rate than upper anterior portion. 2. There was reduction of the image in the horizontal dimension of the teeth, because of the position relation between dry skull and image layer of the orthopantomograph. 3. There was a significant difference in distortion rate between the oposite teeth. 4. Cervical portion of the tooth had more decreased rate of horizontal distortion than apical portion.

Purpose : This study was performed to determine the accuracy of linear measurements on three-dimensional (3D) images using multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods : MDCT and CBCT were performed using 24 dry skulls. Twenty-one measurements were taken on the dry skulls using digital caliper. Both types of CT data were imported into OnDemand software and identification of landmarks on the 3D surface rendering images and calculation of linear measurements were performed. Reproducibility of the measurements was assessed using repeated measures ANOVA and ICC, and the measurements were statistically compared using a Student t-test. Results : All assessments under the direct measurement and image-based measurements on the 3D CT surface rendering images using MDCT and CBCT showed no statistically difference under the ICC examination. The measurements showed no differences between the direct measurements of dry skull and the image-based measurements on the 3D CT surface rendering images (P>.05). Conclusion : Three-dimensional reconstructed surface rendering images using MDCT and CBCT would be appropriate for 3D measurements.

In orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. cephalogram has been routine practice in diagnosis and treatment evaluation of craniofacial deformity. But its inherent distortion of actual length and angles during projecting three dimensional object to two dimensional plane might cause errors in quantitative analysis of shape and size. Therefore, it is desirable that three dimensional object is diagnosed and evaluated three dimensionally and three dimensional CT image is best for three dimensional analysis. Development of clinic necessitates evaluation of result of treatment and comparison before and after surgery. It is desirable that patient that was diagnosed and planned by three dimensional computed tomography before surgery is evaluated by three dimensional computed tomography after surgery. too. But Because there is no standardized normal values in three dimension now and three dimensional Computed Tomography needs expensive equipments and because of its expenses and amount of exposure to radiation. limitations still remain to be solved in its application to routine practice. If postoperative three dimensional image is constructed by pre and postoperative lateral and postero-anterior cephalograms and preoperative three dimensional computed tomogram. pre and postoperative image will be compared and evaluated three dimensionally without three dimensional computed tomography after surgery and that will contribute to standardize normal values in three dimension. This study introduced new method that computer-simulated three dimensional image was constructed by preoperative three dimensional computed tomogram and pre and postoperative lateral and postero-anterior cephalograms. and for validation of new method. in four cases of dry skull that position of mandible was displaced and four patients of orthognathic surgery. computer-simulated three dimensional image and actual postoperative three dimensional image were compared. The results were as follows. 1. In four cases of dry skull that position of mandible was displaced. range of displacement between computer-simulated three dimensional images and actual postoperative three dimensional images in co-ordinates values was from -1.8 mm to 1.8 mm and 94% in displacement of all co-ordinates values was from -1.0 mm to 1.0 mm and no significant difference between computer-simulated three dimensional images and actual postoperative three dimensional images was noticed(p>0.05). 2. In four cases of orthognathic surgery patients, range of displacement between computersimulated three dimensional images and actual postoperative three dimensional images in coordinates values was from -6.7 mm to 7.7 mm and 90% in displacement of all co-ordinates values was from -4.0 to 4.0 mm and no significant difference between computer-simulated three dimensional images and actual postoperative three dimensional images was noticed(p>0.05). Conclusively. computer-simulated three dimensional image was constructed by preoperative three dimensional computed tomogram and pre and postoperative lateral and postero-anterior cephalograms. Therefore. potentiality that can construct postoperative three dimensional image without three dimensional computed tomography after surgery was presented.
Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate differences in the required visibility of anatomic structures according to the diagnostic tasks of implant planning and periapical diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Images of a real skull phantom were acquired under 24 combinations of different exposure conditions in a cone-beam computed tomography scanner (60, 70, 80, 90, 100, and 110 kV and 4, 6, 8, and 10 mA). Five radiologists evaluated the visibility of anatomic structures and the image quality for diagnostic tasks using a 6-point scale. results: The visibility of the periodontal ligament space showed the closest association with the ability to use an image for periapical diagnosis in both jaws. The visibility of the sinus floor and canal wall showed the closest association with the ability to use an image for implant planning. Variations in tube voltage were associated with significant differences in image quality for all diagnostic tasks. However, tube current did not show significant associations with the ability to use an image for implant planning. conclusion: The required visibility of anatomic structures varied depending on the diagnostic task. Tube voltage was a more important exposure parameter for image quality than tube current. Different settings should be used for optimization and image quality evaluation depending on the diagnostic task.
Medical X-ray examination are increased double for the last $6{\sim}8$ years. Therefore a patient exposure dose should be decrease half every 7 years. We made an experiment on copper filter thickness to decrease a patient exposure dose up to half and compared to the Image quality by MTF. The results as follow 1. A thin region like extremities needs a thicker Cu filter as compared a thick region. 2. 1/2 reduction filter must be thicker when kVp Increase. 3. Exposure factor should be increas when using 1/2 reduction filter ; extremity is 4.0 times, chest 2.9 times, skull 1.62 times, and abdomen 1.58 times 4. The MTF of using 1/2 reduction filter is lower than without filter. But no difference of visual image. 5. 1/2 reduction filter compared with double speed screen showed almost same image quality.
In this paper, the authors showed that the removal of impulse noise in CR images was implemented using variety of median filters and SNR/PSNR measurements. They used three kinds of medical images-hand, skull, and knee- for experimental results. But the noise in CR image was only the impulse noise. In real medical image, the noise of an image would be very different type. Therefore. the lack of experimental results using different noise in CR images is one flaw.
