Recently, the works about antibacterial finishing have been actively investigated in textile industry because of increasing environmental pollution. Wool can easily be an medium for microorganisms growth under proper temperature and humid condition. These microorganisms can result in damages, skin irritations, and infections in wool products. For this reason, the wool materials must be protected against microorganisms in order to suppress their growth and dissemination as well as fiber damage. (omitted)

Heart sound contains rich information regarding the dynamics of the heart and the auscultation has been a first choice of routine procedures for diagnosis of the heart. However, heart sounds captured using a conventional stethoscope are not often loud or clear enough for doctors to precisely classify their characteristics, especially, under the noisy environments of the hospital. A simple auscultation device that removed shortcomings of the conventional stethoscope was constructed in the study. The device employed a polymer based adherent differential output sensor which was on contact with skin through a coupling medium and appropriated electronic circuits for signal amplification and conditioning. An ordinary headphone is taken to hear the captured heart sounds and the volume can be adjusted to hear well. It is also possible that the device sends the captured heart sound signals to a PC where the signals are further processed and viualized.
Tyrosinase is known to accelerate the melanin polymer biosynthesis in melanocyte, so tyrosinase inhibitors hinder the melanin polymer biosynthesis and are useful not only for th e material used in cosmetics as skin-whitening agents but also as the remedy for disturbances in pigmentation. During our search for new melanin biosynthesis inhibitors from natural sources, 130 higher plants were tested for the inhibitory effect against tyrosinase activity by the mushroom tyrosinase assay. Among them, Carex humilis ($IC_{50}$, 10vg/ml), Sophora flavescence ($IC_{50},\;20{\sim}50{mu}g/ml$) and Styrax japonica ($IC_{50},\;10{\mu}g/ml$) inhibited the tyrosinase activity strongly.
Collagen is the major structural protein of connective tissues. It can be used as a prosthetic biomaterial applicable to artificial skin, tendon, ligaments, and collagen implants. The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of realizing wound dressing medical products by the synthesis of composite materials with collagen and a biodegradable polymer, PLLA, via a surface modification process. Type I collagen was obtained from pig skin by a separation process. The structural characteristics of the extracted collagen were confirmed by SDS-polyacrylamide (PAcr) gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and FTIR. Also, PLLA-g-PAcr was synthesized by the radical polymerization of acrylamide initiated by AIBN in the presence of PLLA. The surface of PLLA was modified by the presence of the acrylamide residues. The structural characteristics of the copolymer were analyzed by FTIR, $^1H-NMR$ and contact angle measurements. The water uptake and WVTR of the collagen/PLLA-g-PAcr composite tended to increase with increasing collagen concentration and with decreasing EDC concentration.

Molecular recognition technology has attracted considerable attention for improving the selectivity of a specific molecule by imprinting it on a polymer matrix. In this study, adsorption and release characteristics of chitosan based drug delivery films imprinted with sulindac (SLD) were investigated in terms of the plasticizer, temperature and pH and the results were also interpreted by the related mathematical models. The adsorption characteristics of target molecules on SLD-imprinted polymer films were better explained by the Freundlich and Sips equation than that of the Langmuir equation. The binding site energy distribution function was also useful for understanding the adsorption relationship between target molecules and polymer films. The drug release of SLD-imprinted polymer films followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism, whereas the drug release using artificial skin followed the non-Fickian diffusion behavior.

Background: Skin microbiota is important for maintenance of skin homeostasis; however, its disturbance may cause an increase in pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, we aimed to develop a red ginseng formulation that can selectively promote beneficial bacteria. Methods: The effects of red ginseng formulation on microorganism growth were analyzed by comparing the growth rates of Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, and Cutibacterium acnes. Various preservatives mixed with red ginseng formulation were evaluated to determine the ideal composition for selective growth promotion of S. epidermidis. Red ginseng formulation with selected preservative was loaded into a biocompatible polymer mixture and applied to the faces of 20 female subjects in the clinical trial to observe changes in the skin microbiome. Results: Red ginseng formulation promoted the growth of S. aureus and S. epidermidis compared to fructooligosaccharide. When 1,2-hexanediol was applied with red ginseng formulation, only S. epidermidis showed selective growth. The analysis of the release rates of ginsenoside-Rg1 and -Re revealed that the exact content of Pluronic F-127 was around 11%. The application of hydrogel resulted in a decrease in C. acnes in all subjects. In subjects with low levels of S. epidermidis, the distribution of S. epidermidis was significantly increased with the application of hydrogel formulation and total microbial species of subjects decreased by 50% during the clinical trial. Conclusion: We confirmed that red ginseng formulation with 1,2-hexanediol can help maintain skin homeostasis through improvement of skin microbiome.
pH-sensitive P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles were prepared and their feasibility as smart delivery carriers for cosmetic ingredients was evaluated. P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles having an average size of approx. $2{\mu}m$ were synthesized via dispersion photopolymerization. There was a drastic change in the swelling ratio of P(MAA-co-PEGMA) particles at a pH of around 5 due to the ionization of MAA in the hydrogel and as the amount of MAA in the hydrogel increased, the swelling ratio increased at a pH above 5. The P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles showed a pH-sensitive release behavior. Thus, at pH 4 almost none of the albumin permeated through the skin while at pH 6 relatively high skin permeability was obtained. The albumin loaded in the P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles was hardly degraded in the presence of pepsin and its stability was maintained.
Ketorolac tromethamine(KT) is a nonsteroidal agent with potent analgesic and moderate anti-inflammatory activity. The lipid-water partition coefficient of KT was evaluated and KT gel was formulated as a gel containing different pH, different concentrations of polymer (poloxamer 407, carbopol 941), propylene glycol, ethanol and various enhancers. The resulting KT gels were evaluated with respect to their viscosity, in vitro drug permeation rate through hairless mouse skin and stability. In n-octanol and chloroform, the lipid-water partition coefficient of KT was the highest at pH 4 phosphate buffer. The apparent viscosity of KT gel increased with an increase in gel pH, polymer and enhancer concentration. But the apparent viscosity of KT gel decreased with an increase in ethanol concentration. The permeation rate of KT through hairless mouse skin from gels different pH was maximum at pH 4 which is close to KT $pK_{a}$ 3.54. The permeation rate decreased with an increase in polymer, propylene glycol concentration. But the permeation rate increased with an increase in ethanol. The increase of drug concentration from 1 to 3% induced linear increase in permeation rate. The best enhancer was the combination of $Labrasol^{\circledR},\;Transcutol^{\circledR}$, oleic acid and l-menthol. In the accelerated stability test(25, 40 and $50{\circ}C$), pH 5 gel was most stable and pH 4 gel was most unstable for 90 days.

In this study, we introduce a polymer(polyimide) based pressure sensor to measure real-time heart beat and blood pressure. The sensor have been designed with consideration of skin compatibility of material, cost effectiveness, manufacturability and wireless detection. The designed sensor was composed of inductor coils and an air-gap capacitor which generate self-resonant frequency when electrical source is applied on the system. The sensor was obtained with metalization, etching, photolithography, polymer adhesive bonding and laser cutting. The fabricated sensor was shaped in circular type with 10mm diameter and 0.45 mm thickness to fit radial artery. Resonant frequencies of the fabricated sensors were in the range of 91~96 MHz on 760 mmHg pressurized environment. Also the sensor has good linearity without any pressure-frequency hysteresis. Sensitivity of the sensor was 145.5 kHz/mmHg and accuracy was less than 2 mmHg. Real-time heart beat measurement was executed with a developed hand-held measurement system. Possibility of real-time blood pressure measurement was showed with simulated artery system. After installation of the sensor on skin above radial artery, simple real blood pressure measurement was performed with 64 mmHg blood pressure variation.
Recently there has been an explosion of interest in the topic of biodegradable polymers for medical applications. In this study, films were prepared by solution casting method using natural polymers (xanthan, locust bean, guar gum, chitosan and algin) as biomaterials. Biocompatibility of films prepared from natural polymer as a skin implant was evaluated. These biodegradable films were subcutaneously implanted in the back of rats and their biodegradability was investigated by the evaluation of changes in structure, film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rats test showed that locust bean and guar gum induced some suspects of non-biocompatibility in the tissue by foreign body reaction 24 and 48 hrs after implantation. These results showed the potential of partial biodegradable films prepared from natural polymer for ideal skin biomaterials at short period.
