  • The U-Net architecture-based segmentation models attained remarkable performance in numerous medical image segmentation missions like skin lesion segmentation. Nevertheless, the resolution gradually decreases and the loss of spatial information increases with deeper network. The fusion of adjacent layers is not enough to make up for the lost spatial information, thus resulting in errors of segmentation boundary so as to decline the accuracy of segmentation. To tackle the issue, we propose a new deep learning-based segmentation model. In the decoding stage, the feature channels of each decoding unit are concatenated with all the feature channels of the upper coding unit. Which is done in order to ensure the segmentation effect by integrating spatial and semantic information, and promotes the robustness and generalization of our model by combining the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) module and channel attention module (CAM). Extensive experiments on ISIC2016 and ISIC2017 common datasets proved that our model implements well and outperforms compared segmentation models for skin lesion segmentation.

  • A novel method of Skin lesion segmentation based on the combination of Texture and Neural Network is proposed in this paper. This paper combines the textures of different pixels in the skin images in order to increase the performance of lesion segmentation. For segmenting skin lesions, a two-step process is done. First, automatic border detection is performed to separate the lesion from the background skin. This begins by identifying the features that represent the lesion border clearly by the process of Texture analysis. In the second step, the obtained features are given as input towards the Recurrent Echo state neural networks in order to obtain the segmented skin lesion region. The proposed algorithm is trained and tested for 862 skin lesion images in order to evaluate the accuracy of segmentation. Overall accuracy of the proposed method is compared with existing algorithms. An average accuracy of 98.8% for segmenting skin lesion images has been obtained.

  • Traditional methods based active contours or region merging are powerless in processing images with blurring border or hair occlusion. In this paper, a structure based convolutional neural networks is proposed to solve segmentation of skin lesion image. The structure mainly consists of two networks which are segmentation net and discrimination net. The segmentation net is designed based U-net that used to generate the mask of lesion, while the discrimination net is designed with only convolutional layers that used to determine whether input image is from ground truth labels or generated images. Images were obtained from "Skin Lesion Analysis Toward Melanoma Detection" challenge which was hosted by ISBI 2016 conference. We achieved segmentation average accuracy of 0.97, dice coefficient of 0.94 and Jaccard index of 0.89 which outperform the other existed state-of-the-art segmentation networks, including winner of ISBI 2016 challenge for skin melanoma segmentation.

  • Most of studies adopt a fixed skin color model to segment skin color region in a single image. The methods, however, result in low detection rates or high false positive error rates since the distribution of skin color is varies depending on the characteristics of input image. For the effective skin color segmentation, therefore, we need a adaptive skin color model which changes the model depending on the color distribution of input image. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive skin color segmentation algorithm consisting of 2 stages which results in both high detection rate and low false positive error rate.

  • Specialists diagnose skin cancer using a dermatoscopy to detect skin cancer as early as possible, but it is difficult to determine accurate skin lesions because skin lesions have various shapes. Recently, the skin lesion segmentation method using deep learning, which has shown high performance, has a problem in segmenting skin lesions because the boundary between healthy skin and skin lesions is not clear. To solve these issues, the proposed method constructs a transformer block to effectively segment the skin lesion, and constructs an edge decoder for each layer of the network to segment the skin lesion in detail. Experiment results have shown that the proposed method achieves a performance improvement of 0.041 ~ 0.071 for Dic Coefficient and 0.062 ~ 0.112 for Jaccard Index, compared with the previous method.

  • Skin color segmentation techniques have been widely utilized for face/hand detection and tracking in many applications such as a diagnosis system using facial information, human-robot interaction, an image retrieval system. In case of a video image, it is common that the skin color model for a target is updated every frame for the robust target tracking against illumination change. As for a single image, however, most of studies employ a fixed skin color model which may result in low detection rate or high false positive errors. In this paper, we propose a novel method for effective skin color segmentation in a single image, which modifies the conditions for skin color segmentation iteratively by the image feedback of segmented skin color region in a given image.

  • This paper presents a novel M-shaped encoder-decoder architecture for skin lesion segmentation, achieving better performance than existing approaches. The proposed architecture utilizes the left and right legs to enable multi-scale feature extraction and is further enhanced by integrating an attention module within the skip connection. The image is partitioned into four distinct patches, facilitating enhanced processing within the encoder-decoder framework. A pivotal aspect of the proposed method is to focus more on critical image features through an attention mechanism, leading to refined segmentation. Experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach, demonstrating superior accuracy, precision, and Jaccard Index compared to existing methods

  • The paper presents a novel algorithm for face and iris detection with the application for driver iris monitoring. The proposed algorithm consists of the following major steps: Skin-color segmentation, facial features segmentation, and iris positioning. For the skin-segmentation we applied a multi-layer perceptron to approximate the statistical probability of certain skin-colors, and filter out those with low probabilities. The next step segments the face region into the following categories: eye, mouth, eye brow, and remaining facial regions. For this purpose we propose a novel segmentation technique based on estimation of facial class probability density functions (PDF). Each facial class PDF is estimated on the basis of salient features extracted from a corresponding facial image region. Then pixels are classified according to the highest probability selected from four estimated PDFs. The final step applies the circular Hough transform to the detected eye regions to extract the position and radius of the iris. We tested our system on two data sets. The first one is obtained from the Web and contains faces under different illuminations. The second dataset was collected by us. It contains images obtained from video sequences recorded by a CCD camera while a driver was driving a car. The experimental results are presented, showing high detection rates.

  • This paper proposes a skin segmentation method based on region histograms of the color quantization map. First, we make a quantization map of the image using the JSEG algorithm and detect the skin pixel. For the skin region detection, the similar neighboring regions are set by its similarity of the size and location between the previous frame and the present frame from the each region of the color quantization map. Then we compare the similarity of histogram between the color distributions of each quantized region and the skin color model using the histogram distance. We select the skin region by the threshold value calculated automatically. The skin model is updated by the skin color information from the selected result. The proposed algorithm was compared with previous algorithms on the ECHO database and the continuous images captured under time varying illumination for adaptation test. Our approach shows better performance than previous approaches on skin color segmentation and adaptation to varying illumination.

  • Skin prick test is widely used in diagnosing allergic sensitization to common inhalant or food allergens, in which positivities are manually determined by calculating the areas or mean diameters of wheals and erythemas provoked by allergens pricked into patients' skin. In this work, we propose a segmentation algorithm over U-Net, one of the FCN models of deep learning, to help us more objectively grasp the erythema boundaries. The performance of the model is analyzed by comparing the results of automatic segmentation of the test data to U-Net with the results of manual segmentation. As a result, the average Dice coefficient value was 94.93%, the average precision and sensitivity value was 95.19% and 95.24% respectively. We find that the proposed algorithm effectively discriminates the skin's erythema boundaries. We expect this algorithm to play an auxiliary role in skin prick test in real clinical trials in the future.
