Semiotics is an external expression for show-ing internal meaning, and the signs express the internal meaning. The architects and the designers are very similar each other in using semiotics for expressing their desires. Histori-cally, the design similarity exists between the architecture and the fashion. In this study, the fashion designs are interpreted by using semiotics of architectural design, especially emphasizing external expression methods for representing internal desires. To express the human body's character-istics, the volume, weight support, structural simplicity, controllability and beauty of fashion were used for the fashion designs, and those characters could be found at the architec-tural patterns. Balenciaga's fashion emphasized the volume, the weigh support, the structural simplicity and the controllability, while Roberto Capucci rejected the approach of using women's body curves, but used the volume and simplicity of natures in addition to Balenciaga's heavy weight design patterns. The control and the modern dedication were used to make the simple patterns by Courreges, and then brought the Modernism to the fashion. Courreges used the cutting characters to func-tional design for expressing the structural sim-plicity.

At the early stages of engineering design, a number of design concepts may be suggested. With a great degree of freedom, making a good choice may be a challenge at this stage. In this study, a simplified evaluation criterion for design concepts is presented based on cost, simplicity and safety. Cost is estimated by the amount of materials and the required level of tolerance. Simplicity is represented by the number of parts, assembly steps, and fasteners. Safety is assessed by the level of potential failure. The proposed criterion is applied to an example design of driving mechanisms for cervical vertebrae massage machine.

Typical multi-tier client/server architecture includes various and complex objects scattered around the network. Those objects must be clearly identified and designed. Then, their interface must be well-defined so that the integration can be done without major difficulties. This paper presents an application framework to increase reuse and to accomplish architectural simplicity in information systems development. Each component of the architecture is identified and designed. The proposed architecture of the application framework provides the fundamental structure for developing individual functions of an information system. Resulting architectural simplicity achieves effective and efficient maintenance throughout the lifecycle of the information systems. Although the framework aims at the reuse within a project, the productivity of information systems development across projects will be greatly improved eventually. Cases are discussed to evaluate the practicality of the architecture presented.

This study explores the factors influencing user satisfaction of mobile IPTV and their relationship. We formulate the research model based on characteristics of mobile device and IPTV. Responsiveness, contents satisfaction, price satisfaction, aesthetic simplicity, network quality are proposed as essential antecedents of mobile IPTV satisfaction. We also suggest network quality and gender as moderators. Our data analysis with 297 mobile IPTV users shows contents and price have significant positive effect on mobile IPTV satisfaction. Network quality shows positive moderation effect on the relationship between responsiveness and satisfaction.

Multiple imputation, proposed by Rubin, is a procedure for handling missing data. One of the attractive parts of multiple imputation is the simplicity of the variance estimation formula. Because of the simplicity, it has been often abused and misused beyond its original prescription. This paper provides the bias of the multiple imputation variance estimator for a linear point estimator and discusses when the bias can be safely neglected.

J. Malkevitch defined the coded path in r-valent polytopal graphs of uniform face structure and showed many interesting properties of the coded paths. In this paper, we study the simplicity of coded paths in an m-valent planar multigraph which is not a polytopal graph.

Evaluation method of seismic performance has mainly used elastic spectrum analysis. This method has simplicity of analysis but deficiency of accuracy. And evaluation method of seismic performance using inelastic dynamic analysis reflects accurately inelasticity of material but hardly reflects site effects. This study suggested evaluation scheme of seismic performance for bridge structure using capacity spectrum method applied inelastic static analysis and standard design response spectrum of Korea Standard Specification for Highway Bridge. Two results, capacity spectrum method and inelastic dynamic analysis method, are very similar. As a result, this study appropriately supply both simplicity of analysis and accuracy of result.

In presented paper there were studied some properties of Benford's law. The existence of this law in not necessary large sets of numbers is a very interesting example that can show how the complex phenomena can appear in the positional number systems. Such systems seem to be very simple and intuitive and help us proceed with numbers. However, their simplicity in the case of usage in our lifetime is not necessary connected with the simplicity in the case of laws that govern them. Even if this laws indicate the existence of self-similar properties.

The purpose of this study is to review the innovation of Vidal Sassoon's hair design. His hair styling was created in 1950-60, and it was related to the Zeitgeist, 'Convulsion'. It was aesthetic reform that eliminated artificially of headdress through new design concept and high technique. It was social renovation that changed women's life through freedom, ease and mobility of hair form. Also, it was scientific innovation that emphasized improvement of hair care. Therefore this researcher set a high value on his contribution in beauty industry, and studied the formative characteristics of his hair styling. The results are as follows: The formative characteristics are classified into the simplicity of form, the mobility of construction, and the variety of color and texture. 1. The simplicity of form showed through geometric form. Vidal Sassoon's hair design had the overthrow traditional concept of femininity and beauty; in addition, it conferred freedom on not only hair itself but also women's action. 2. The naturalism and mobility of construction was found in layered and softly swinging hair made up by skillful cutting technique. It was developed by studying on the dynamism of sports in 1984 LA Olympic games. 3. The variety of color and texture showed conspicuously its visual evidence because of the simplicity of form. Especially, he borrowed factors of fine art, that is to say, form, space, texture, line, color and light, and created a performance art. His work is analyzed into an art, and he is one of the best artists.
