  • In many practical problems in signal processing and control, the signal values are often restricted to belong to a finite number of levels. These questions are generally referred to as "finite alphabet" problems. There are many applications of this class of problems including: on-off control, optimal audio quantization, design of finite impulse response filters having quantized coefficients, equalization of digital communication channels subject to intersymbol interference, and control over networked communication channels. This paper will explain how this diverse class of problems can be formulated as optimization problems having finite alphabet constraints. Methods for solving these problems will be described and it will be shown that a semi-closed form solution exists. Special cases of the result include well known practical algorithms such as optimal noise shaping quantizers in audio signal processing and decision feedback equalizers in digital communication. Associated stability questions will also be addressed and several real world applications will be presented.

  • PIV (particle image velocimetry) systems use a camera to take snapshots of particles carried by a fluid at some precise instants. Signal processing methods are then used to compute the flow velocity field. In this paper, the design of the camera objective (optics) is addressed. The optimization is done in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of in-focus particles. Four different kinds of noise are considered: photon shot noise, thermal and read noise, background glow shot noise, and noise made by the other particles. A semi-empirical model for the lens aberrations of a two-doublet objective is first addressed, since further, it is shown that lens aberrations (low f-value $f_{\#}$) should be used instead of the Fraunhofer diffraction (high f-value) for the fitting of the particle image size with the pixel size. Other important conclusions of the paper include the expression of optimum values for the magnification M, for the exposure period $\tau$ and for the pixel size $\xi$.

  • This paper proposes the optimization of ultrasonic signal recognition in ferrite carbon steel weld zone using neural networks. For these purposes, the ultrasonic signals for defects as porosity, incomplete penetration and slag inclusion in the weld zone are acquired in the type of time series data. And then their applications evaluated feature extraction based on the time-frequency-attractor domain(peak to peak, rise time, rise slope, fall time, fall slope, pulse duration, power spectrum, and bandwidth) and attractor characteristics (fractal dimension and attractor quadrant) etc. The proposed neural networks system in this study can enhances performance of ultrasonic signal recognition.

  • The control delays at signal intersections have proved the source of numerous vehicular and environmental complications. Control delays both directly and indirectly hinder time- and cost-effective driving by extending the duration of time spent on the road and exhausting excessive amounts of fuel. They furthermore cause traffic congestion, thereby raising overall emission levels. It is therefore imperative to reduce control delays in order to achieve time and fuel economy and reduce vehicle-related pollution. The following study accordingly uses genetic algorithms to optimize traffic signals in congested environments.

  • Traditional genetic algorithms, though robust, are generally not the most successful optimization algorithm on only particular domian. Hybridizing a genetic algorithm with other algorithms can produce better performance than both the genetic algorithm and the other algorithms. This paper describes the application of random signal-based learning to a genetic algorithm in order to get well tuned fuzzy rules. The key of tis approach is to adjust both the width and the center of membership functions so that the tuned rule-based fuzzy controller can generate the desired performance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by computer simulation.

  • It is very important to place receiver in multistatic sonar. Inefficient placement of the receiver reduce detection probability and to increase the probability of detection should be used more receivers. Therefore, detection of targets in searching area, detection performance of limited receiver depends on how to place. Through the optimized receiver placement, detection area between each sonar as much as possible avoid duplication, as optimization, the minimum receiver can be maintained detection performance. In this paper we prove mathematical verification of maximum signal excess value based on sonar placement and we calculate a signal excess value by using computer simulations and suggest optimal sonar placement.

  • Co-channel interference between macro-femtocell networks is an unresolved problem, due to the frequency reuse phenomenon. To mitigate such interference, a secondary femtocell must acquire channel-state knowledge about a co-channel macrocell user and accordingly condition the maximum transmit power of femtocell user. This paper proposes a pilot-based spectrum sensing (PSS) algorithm for overlaid femtocell networks to sense the presence of a macrocell user over a channel of interest. The PSS algorithm senses the pilot tones in the received signal through the power level and the correlation metric comparisons between the received signal and the local reference pilots. On ensuring the existence of a co-channel macrocell user, the maximum transmit power of the corresponding femtocell user is optimized so as to avoid interference. Time and frequency offsets are carefully handled in our proposal. Simulation results show that the PSS algorithm outperforms existing sensing techniques, even at poor received signal quality. It requires less sensing time and provides better detection probability over existing techniques.

  • Psychoacoustic model based methods have recently been introduced in order to enhance speech signals corrupted by ambient noise. In particular, the perceptual filter is analytically derived where the frequency content of the input noisy signal is made the same as that of the estimated clean signal in auditory domain. However, the analytical derivation should rely on the deconvolution associated with the spreading function in the psychoacoustic model, which results in an ill-conditioned problem. In order to cope with the problem associated with the deconvolution, we propose a novel psychoacoustic model based speech enhancement filter whose principle is the same as the perceptual filter, however the filter is derived by a constrained optimization which provides solutions to the ill-conditioned problem. It is demonstrated with artificially generated signals that the proposed filter operates according to the principle. It is shown that superior performance results from the proposed filter over the perceptual filter provided that a clean speech signal is separable from noise.

  • For the issue of subsurface target localization by reverse projection, a new approach of target localization with different distances based on symmetric sub-array multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed in this paper. By utilizing the particularity of structure of the two symmetric sub-arrays, the received signals are jointly reconstructed to eliminate the distance information from the steering vectors. The distance-independent direction of arrival (DOA) estimates are acquired, and the localizations of subsurface targets with different distances are realized by reverse projection. According to the localization mechanism and application characteristics of the proposed algorithm, the grid zooming method based on spatial segmentation is used to optimize the locaiton efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed localization method and optimization scheme.

  • In this study, a model and an analysis method for parameter design is presented a linear relation between the input signal and the ideal value of a performance characteristic. Furthermore, There presented a new performance measure, expected quality loss after adjustment, which is proved to be equivalent to Taguchi's SN ratio approximately. On the basis of this, a two-step optimization procedure is proposed for parameter design considering the signal factor and the quality characteristics with continuous variable. Proposed procedure and Taguchi two-stage procedure are compared.
