  • Cascaded H-bridge multilevel (CHBML) inverters usually include a large number of isolated dc-voltage sources. Some faults in the dc-voltage sources result in unequal cell dc voltages. Unfortunately, the conventional phase-shifted carrier (PSC) PWM method that is widely used for CHBML inverters cannot eliminate low frequency sideband harmonics when the cell dc voltages are not equal. This paper analyzes the principle of sideband harmonic elimination, and proposes an improved PSCPWM that can eliminate low frequency sideband harmonics under the condition of unequal dc voltages. In order to calculate the carrier phases, it is necessary to solve transcendental equations for low frequency sideband harmonic elimination. Therefore, an approach based on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is presented in this paper. The proposed PSCPWM method enhances the reliability of CHBML inverters. The proposed PSCPWM is not limited to CHBML inverters. It can also be applied to other types of multilevel inverters. Simulation and experimental result obtained from a prototype CHBML inverter verify the theoretical analysis and the achievements made in this paper.

  • A 10-Gbit/s wireless communication system operating at a carrier frequency of 300 GHz is presented. The modulation scheme is amplitude shift keying in incoherent mode with a high intermediate frequency (IF) of 30 GHz and a bandwidth of 20 GHz for transmitting a 10-Gbit/s baseband (BB) data signal. A single sideband transmission is implemented using a waveguide-tapered 270-GHz high-pass filter with a lower sideband rejection of around 60 dB. This paper presents an all-electronic design of a terahertz communication system, including the major modules of the BB and IF band as well as the RF modules. The wireless link shows that, aided by a clock and data recovery circuit, it can receive $2^7$-1 pseudorandom binary sequence data without error at up to 10 Gbit/s for over 1.2 m using collimating lenses, where the transmitted power is 10 ${\mu}W$.

  • A single sideband(SSB) modulator operating at 5.5 GHz was fabricated by polarization inversion techniques. The dimension of domain inversion in a $LiINbO_3$ Mach-Zehnder structure was precisely controlled so that the RF signal applied on two Mach-Zehnder arms gives rise to $90^{\circ}$ effective phase difference. The single sideband suppression was maximized by optimization of the polarization status of the optical input and by the DC bias value. The fabricated device showed the center frequency of 5.8 GHz and the maximum sideband suppression of 33dB, where the bandwidth of 15 dB sideband suppression ranged over a 2.5 GHz span. The optical phase delay could be regulated by the DC bias voltage, fur example, the enhanced optical modulation sideband was distinctively switched from the upper sideband to the lower sideband by changing the DC bias voltage from 1.9 V to -10.6 V.

  • In this paper, we designed self-frequency synchronizing circuit using image rejection mixer(IRM) and single-sideband(SSB) up-converter which can effectively eliminate the image frequencies occurred in multi-channel super-heterodyne receivers and help us to match inter-channel phase. Also the self-frequency synchronizing circuit simplifies system because there need no extra devices for making intermediate frequency(IF) by creating the local signal within several nanoseconds by means of generating the same frequency of IF signal and modulating radio frequency(RF) signal. We adopt the limiting amplifier for the purpose of protecting the circuit from spurious signals which come from the front end side having wide instantaneous bandwidth characteristics and constantly injecting same level into the input local signal of IRM. The IRM we fabricated has image rejection ratio of 27dB, which is good over 7dB for foreign company's. Also, the SSB up-converter we fabricated has 1dB compression point of 18dBm, which is good over 16dB for foreign company's. And the size is compact about one-forth.

  • This paper proposes an improved discrete Fourier transform spread single sideband(DFT-s-SSB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system that solves the problems of conventional DFT-s-SSB OFDM systems. Conventional DFT-s-SSB systems use pulse amplitude modulation(PAM) for applying SSB modulation. The higher the modulation level, the worse is the BER performance. Further, transmission is possible only through the lower sideband(LSB) spectrum. When transmitting using the LSB and upper sideband(USB) spectra simultaneously, interference occurs and spectrum recovery is not performed correctly. To solve this problem, the proposed system applies the 2/3 convolution coding to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance, adjusts the DFT size, and selects the USB spectrum to utilize the remaining spectrum resources. In addition, when using this system in an environment that supports multiuser or limited bandwidth, it uses only half of the spectrum; therefore, it can utilize the remaining spectrum resources and improve the spectral efficiency.

  • A ring resonator based band-pass filter enabling enhanced sideband suppression was proposed and demonstrated. It is composed of a single-ring based band-pass section combined with a band-rejection section based on two different coupled rings. The sideband region of the transfer characteristics of the first band-pass filter section was selectively suppressed by means of the band-rejection section without causing any excessive insertion loss. As a result, the overall transfer characteristics of the proposed filter was unproved so that its sideband suppression was elevated to allow for sharper roll-off and narrower bandwidth. In this work, a conventional single-ring band-pass filter and a proposed filter including the band-rejection section were designed and fabricated. As for the achieved device performance, with the center frequency at about 4 GHz, the sideband suppression ratio was increased as much as 8 dB and the 3-dB bandwidth was reduced from 98 MHz to 48 MHz by about 51% with no remarkable excessive insertion loss as expected. And the quality factor of the device was increased by about 105%.

  • New experiments focusing on the evolution characteristics of nonlinear wave trains were conducted in a large wave flume. A series of wave trains with added sidebands, varying initial steepness, perturbed amplitudes and frequencies, were physically generated in a long wave flume. The experimental results show that the increasing wave steepness, increases the speed of sidebands growth. To study the frequency and phase modulation, the Morlet wavelet transform is adopted to extract the instantaneous frequency of wave trains and the phase functions of each wave component. From the instantaneous frequency, there are local frequency downshifts, even an effective frequency downshift was not observed. The frequency modulation increases with an increase in amplitude modulation, and abrupt changes of instantaneous frequencies occur at the peak modulation. The wrapped phase functions show that in the early stage of the modulation, the phase of the upper sideband first diverges from that of the carrier waves. However, at the later stage, the discrepancy phase from the carrier wave transformed to the lower sideband. The phase deviations appear in the front of the envelope's peaks. Furthermore, the evolution of the instantaneous frequency exhibits an approximate recurrence-type for the experiment with large imposed sidebands, even when the corresponding recurrence is not observed in the Fourier spectrum.

  • A novel 60GHz optical carrier generator with a polarization domain-inverted structure is suggested and is demonstrated. The two arms of the Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide are periodically poled for quasi-phase velocity matching between the optical wave at 1550nm and the RF wave at 30 GHz. The center frequency of band-pass modulation and the 3 dB bandwidth of the fabricated modulator were measured to be 30.3 GHz and 5.1 GHz, respectively. Sub-carriers with the frequency difference of 60GHz waeregenerated under appropriate DC biac voltage application while the carrier was suppressed to lead to the power ratio between the modulated sub-carrier and the suppressed fundamental carrier of 28 dB, which proves that double sideband- suppressed carrier(DSB-SC) operation can be realized by the suggested single device.

  • A new method is proposed to generate a 32-tupling frequency millimeter wave (MMW) with eight Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) connected in parallel. Theoretical analyses and simulation experiments are conducted. The optical sideband suppression ratio (OSSR) of the obtained ±16th order optical sidebands are 61.54 dB and 61.42 dB, and the radio frequency spurious suppression ratios (RFSSRs) of the generated 32-tupling frequency MMW are 55.52 dB and 55.27 dB based on the theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, respectively; these outcomes verified the feasibility of the new method. The main parameters used to affect the stability of the generated signal are the modulation index and extinction ratio of MZM. Their effects on the OSSR and RFSSR of the generated signals are investigated when they deviate from their designed values. Compared with the other proposed methods for the generation of 32-tupling frequency MMW by MZM, our method has the best spectral purity and stability, and it is expected to have important MMW over fiber applications.

  • This paper proposes two kinds of single-balanced direct conversion quadrature receivers using selfoscillating LMVs in which the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) itself operates as a mixer while generating an oscillation. The two LMVs are complementary coupled and series coupled to generate the quadrature oscillating signals, respectively. Using a 65 nm CMOS technology, the proposed quadrature receivers are designed and simulated. Oscillating at around 2.4 GHz frequency, the complementary coupled quadrature receiver achieves the phase noise of -28 dBc/Hz at 1KHz offset and -109 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. The other series coupled receiver achieves the phase noise of -31 dBc/Hz at 1KHz offset and -109 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. The simulated voltage conversion gain of the two single-balanced receivers is 37 dB and 45 dB, respectively. The double-sideband noise figure of the two receivers is 5.3 dB at 1 MHz offset. The quadrature receivers consume about 440 μW dc power from a 1.0-V supply.
