The advantage of CFBC(Circulating fluidized bed combustor) is that it can apply to various fuel sources including the lower rank fuel and remove SOx by means of direct supply of limestone to the combustor without additional desulfation facility. In this paper, we denote characteristics of fly and bed ash to reuse finer limestone usually abandoned(used spec[Coarse LS] 0.1mm under 25%, new spec[Fine LS] 0.1mm under 50%). According to the results, the chemical composition of fly ash was as follows; $SiO_2\;40.8%,\;Al_2O_3\;31.9%,\;CaO\;10.7%,\;K_2O\;4.46%$ in the case of coarse limestone and $SiO_2\;41.1%,\;Al_2O_3\;31.3%,\;CaO\;10.9%,\;K_2O\;4.66%$ in the case of fine limestone. The chemical composition of bed ash was as follows; $SiO_2\;54.2%,\;Al_2O_3\;33.1%,\;CaO\;1.56%,\;K_2O\;4.34%$ in the case of coarse limestone and $SiO_2\;53.8%,\;Al_2O_3\;32.6%,\;CaO\;2.21%,\;K_2O\;4.45%$ in the case of fine limestone. It showed that there was no significant change in chemical composition. And it is conformed that there was no significant change in particle size and shapes.
Silica powders were prepared from $SiCl_4$-$H_2$O system by chemical vapor deposition process, and investigated on size control of the products with reaction conditions. The products were amorphous and nearly spherical particles with 130nm~50nm in size. The size distribution became narrow with the increase of [$H_2$O]/[SiCl$_4$] concentration ratio. The particle size decreased with the increase of reaction temperature, [$H_2$O]/[SiCl$_4$] concentration ratio and total flow rate. The specific surface area measured by BET method was about three times larger than that of electron microscope method.
Al matrix composites as the most promising MMCs can be expected to be excellent engineering materials in the nearest future. So as to improve material properties of composite, many manufacturing processes have been developed. Among them, squeeze casting process which offers fine microstructure and near-net-shape is one of the most successful MMCs manufacturing processes. But, in case of with subsieve size particles (under 44 ${\mu}m$), it is very difficult to homogeneously distribute particles in matrix of Al matrix composite by various casting processes, including squeeze casting used so far. Duplex process which was developed in previous study was used to distribute the particle of subsieve size more homogeneously in matrix of Al matrix composite. Microstructures, wear and heat resistance characterization of Al-Si-Cu-Mg-(Ni)/SiCp manufactured by duplex process were examined to clarify the effect of manufacturing conditions, particle size of reinforcement and alloying elements. Al matrix composites reinforced with SiCp(10 ${\mu}m$) have the lowest wear amount among composites reinforced with 3 ${\mu}m$, 5 ${\mu}m$ and 10 ${\mu}m$ SiCp. The wear amount of Al matrix composites with 10 wt.% SiCp(3, 5, 10 ${\mu}m$) was decreased according to the increase of the sliding speed because abrasive wear takes place at high sliding speed of 4m/s and worn debris with block type occurs at low sliding speed of 1m/s. As for heat resistance, it is made clear that remarkable heat resistance property can be obtained by addition of Ni element in Al matrix composites.
This study aims to investigate on the effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the microstructures, wear and heat resistance of Al-Si-Cu-Mg-(Ni)/SiCp prepared by the duplex process developed in previous study, which consists of squeeze infiltration (1st process) and squeeze casting (2nd process). The hardness of composite increased with decrease in SiCp size and Ni addition in both the heat exposured composite and the as-cast one. And the heat and wear resisting properties was improved by the SiCp reinforcement and the Ni addition. The wear amount of Al/SiCp composite decreased with decreasing in the size of silicon carbide particle.
ZnO quantum dots embedded in a silica matrix without agglomeration were synthesized from $TEOS:Zn(NO_3)_2$ solutions in one-step process by aerosol-gel method. It was successfully demonstrated that the size of ZnO Q-dots could be controlled from 2 to 7 mm verified by a high resolution transmission electron microscope observation. The line scanning energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) revealed that the Q-dots existed preferentially inside SiO2 sphere when Zn/Si < 0.5. However, the Q-dots distributed homogeneously all over the sphere when Zn/Si > 1.0. Blue-shifted UV/Vis absorption peak observation confirmed the quantum size effect on the optical properties. The photoluminescence(PL) emission peaks of the powders at room temperature were consistent with previous reports in the following aspects: 1) PL characteristics are dominated by two peaks of deep-level defect-related emissions at 2.4 - 2.8 eV, 2) the first defect-related peak at 2.4 eV was blue shifted due to the quantum size effect with decreasing the concentration of $Zn(NO_3)_2$(decreasing the size of ZnO q dots). More interestingly, the existence of surface-exposed ZnO q dots affects greatly the second defect PL peak at 2.8 eV.
Zircon has excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties, but it is hard to make a dense sintered product because of dissociation during the sintering process. This study analyzes how the addition of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ affects the mechanical properties of sintered zircon, particularly in regards to reducing the thermal dissociation and improving the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$. Zircon specimens containing different amounts of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ were prepared and sintered to observe how the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$ changed according to the differing amount of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$. The $ZrSiO_4$ that was used for the starting material was ground by ball mill to an average particle size of 3 ${\mu}m$. The $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ that was used for additives were ground to an average particle size of 3 ${\mu}m$ and 0.5 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Adding $SiO_2$ resulted in transformation in the liquid phase at high temperatures, which had little effect on suppressing the thermal dissociation but enhanced the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$. When $Al_2O_3$ was added, the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$ decreased due to the formation of pores and abnormal grains in the microstructure of the sintered zircon.
The mechanical properties of liquid phase sintered (LPS) SiC materials, with the addition of oxide powder, were investigated, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. LPS-SiC materials were fabricated at a temperature of 1820 $^{\circ}C$ under an argon atmosphere, using three different starting sizes of SiC particles. The sintering additive for the fabrication of the LPS-SiC materials was an $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ mixture with a constant composition ratio ($Al_2O_3/Y_2O_3$: 1.5). The particle sizes of the commercial SiC powderswere 30 nm, 0.3 $\mu$m, and 3.0 $\mu$m. The flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials was also examined at elevated temperatures. A decrease in the starting size of the SiC particles led to an increase in the flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials, accompanying a highly dense morphology with the creation of a secondary phase. Such a secondary phase was identified as $Y_3Al_2(AlO_4)2$. The flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials greatly decreased with an increase in the test temperature, due to the creation of a large amount of pores.
Si-C composites were prepared by the carbonization of polyaniline (PAn) coated on silicone powder. The physical and electrochemical properties of the Si-C composites were characterized by particle-size analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and battery electrochemical tests. The average particle size of Si was increased by the coating of Pan but somewhat reduced by the carbonization to give silicone-carbon composites. The co-existence of crystalline silicone and amorphous-like carbon was confirmed by XRD analyses. SEM photos showed that the silicone particles were well covered with carbonaceous materials, depending on the PAn content. Si-C$\mid$Li cells were fabricated using the Si-C composites and tested using galvanostatic charge-discharge. Si-C$\mid$Li cells gave better electrochemical properties than Si|Li cells. Si-C$\mid$Li cells using Si-C from HCl-undoped precursor PAn showed better electrochemical properties than precursor PAn doped in HCl. The addition of an electrolyte containing 4-fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) increased the initial discharge capacity. Also, another electrochemical test, the galvanostatic charge-discharge test with GISOC (gradual increasing of the state of charge) was carried out. Si-C(Si:PAn = 50:50 wt. ratio)|Li cell showed 414 mAh/g of reversible specific capacity, 75.7% of IIE (initial intercalation efficiency), 35.4 mAh/g of IICs (surface irreversible specific capacity).
The effect of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ seeding on microstructural development of silicon nitride based materials has been investigated. In particular, to observe more distinctly the abnormal grain growth in pressureless sintering, fine $\alpha$-$Si_3N_4$(mean particle size: 0.26 ${\mu}m$) powder classified by sedimentation method was used. It was possible to prepare silicon nitride with abnormally grown grains under low nitrogen pressure of 1 atm thanks to the heterogeneous nucleation on $Si_3N_4$ seed particles. The size and morphology of silicon nitride grains were strongly influenced by the presence of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ seed and overall chemical composition. For specimens with initially low $\beta$-content, the large grains grew without a significant impingement by other large grains. On the contrary, for specimens with initially high $\beta$-content, steric hindrance was effective. The resulting microstructure was less inhomogeneous and characterized by unimodal grain size distribution.
