  • Doping the nanoparticles of Pd, p-$BaTiO_3$, $SiO_2$ and MgO into LCs alters their physical properties such as $K_{ii}$, $\Delta\varepsilon$, ${\Delta}n$, $\gamma_1$ and $T_{NI}$. Except for $K_{33}$, all these parameters decreases and thus bring the reduction of operating voltage and/or response times.

  • Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated using $PdO_x$ loaded with SWNTs. The nanoparticle powders of $SWNT_s-PdO_x$ composite were deposited on Si wafer substrates by a vacuum filtering deposition method. The fabricated sensors were tested against hydrogen gas. The composition ratio that exhibited the highest response to hydrogen gases was SWNTs : $PdO_x$ = 98 : 2 in wt% ratio at operating temperature of about $150^{\circ}C$. The response and recovery times were shorter than 1.0 min. in presence of 1000 ppm hydrogen.

  • Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) has been used widely for transparent conducting thin films. In this work, the feasibility of a laser sintering process to fabricate ITO thin films on flexible substrates is examined. Nanoparticles of ~10 nm were spin coated on a Si wafer and then sintered by a KrF excimer laser. The sintered structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Polycrystalline structures were fabricated by the process without thermally damaging the substrate. The electrical resistivity of the film was reduced to ~ 1/1000 of the initial value. This work demonstrates that nanosecond laser sintering of ITO particles can be a useful tool to fabricate ITO films on various flexible substrates.

  • Silica/SUS composite membranes were prepared for CO removal from products of methanol steam reforming. A support was prepared by coating Ni powder of sub-micron and SiO$_2$ sols of particle size of 500nm and 150nm in turns on a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate. Silica top layer was coated on the modified support using colloidal sol with nanoparticle. As a result of mixture gas permeation test of silica composite membrane using H$_2$(99%)/CO(1%), CO concentration of 10000 ppm was reduced to under 81 ppm, which is acceptable in PEMFC anode gas specification. Permeation mechanism through the membrane was mainly molecular sieving.

  • Colloidal titania nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple sol-gel process. The obtained nanoparticles showed high crystallinity and were of the anatase type. These crystalline colloidal titania nanoparticles were organically modified using methyl- and glycidyl-grafted silanes in order to enhance their stability and solution processability. The stabilized colloidal titania nanoparticles could be dispersed homogeneously without aggregation and converted into silica-titania hybrid films with the heterogeneous Si-O-Ti bonds by a low-temperature solution process. The fabricated silica-titania hybrid films showed high transparency (~ 90%) in the visible range, and low RMS roughness (<1 nm). Therefore, the organosilane-modified crystalline colloidal titania nanoparticles can be used in solution-processable functional coatings for electro-optical devices.

  • Anodic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes are very attractive materials for gas sensors due to its large surface to volume ratios. The most widely known method for fabrication of TiO2 nanotubes is anodic oxidation of metallic Ti foil. Since the remaining Ti substrate is a metallic conductor, TiO2 nanotube arrays on Ti are not appropriate for gas sensor applications. Detachment of the TiO2 nanotube arrays from the Ti Substrate or the formation of electrodes onto the TiO2 nanotube arrays have been used to demonstrate gas sensors based on TiO2 nanotubes. But the sensitivity was much lower than those of TiO2 gas sensors based on conventional TiO2 nanoparticle films. In this study, Ti thin films were deposited onto a SiO2/Si substrate by electron beam evaporation. Samples were anodized in ethylene glycol solution and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) with 0.1wt%, 0.2wt%, 0.3wt% and potentials ranging from 30 to 60V respectively. After anodization, the samples were annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hours, leading to porous TiO2 films with TiO2 nanotubes. With changing temperature and CO concentration, gas sensor performance of the TiO2 nanotube gas sensors were measured, demonstrating the potential advantages of the porous TiO2 films for gas sensor applications. The details on the fabrication and gas sensing performance of TiO2 nanotube sensors will be presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to prepare GPTMS((3-Glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane)-SiO2 nanofluid and analyze the effect of nanofluid injection on carbonate reservoirs. Structural analysis of silica nanoparticles modified by GPTMS was investigated by FTIR(Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). C-H stretching vibrations at 2,950 cm-1 indicating the silica surface modification with GPTMS were observed when the silane feed was over 0.5 mmol/g. Also, the coreflooding test by nanofluid injection on the aged limestone and dolomite plug samples was carried out with different particle concentration and flow rate. The incremental oil recovery was up to 18.9%, and contact angle and permeability of carbonate samples were changed by the effect of nanoparticle adsorption on pore which caused wettability alteration and pore size change. Therefore, the prepared nanofluid will be utilized as an injection fluid for enhancing oil recovery and modifying fluid flow properties such as change of rock wettability and permeability in carbonate reservoirs.

  • Printing technologies have been indicated as alternative methods for patterning conductive, semi-conductive or insulative materials on account of their low-cost, large-area patternability and pattern flexibility. For application of the printing technologies in manufacture of semiconductor or display modules, ink or paste composed of nanoparticles, solvent and additives are basically needed. Here, we report recent advances in eco-friendly nano-ink technology for semiconductor and display technology. Then, we will introduce an eco-friendly ink formation technology developed in our group with an example of manufacturing $SiO_2$ nanopowders and inks. We tried to manufacture ultrafine $SiO_2$ nanoparticles by applying a low-temperature synthetic method, and then attempted to fabricate the printed $SiO_2$ film onto the glass substrate to see whether the $SiO_2$ nanoparticles are feasible for the printing or not. Finally, the electrical characteristics of the films were measured to investigate the effect of the manufacturing parameters.

  • Conventional perfluorinated sulfonic acid membrane, Nafion is widely used for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). It is desired to prevent vanadium ion permeation through a membrane to retain the capacity, and to keep the cell efficiency of a VRFB. Highly proton conductive and chemically stable Nafion membranes, however, suffer from high vanadium permeation, which induce the reduction in charge and discharge capacity by side reactions of vanadium ions. In this study, to resolve the issue, silica nanoparticles, which are functionalized with 3-aminopropyl group (fS) are introduced to enhance the long-term performance of a VRFB by lowering vanadium permeation. It is expected that amine groups on silica nanoparticles are converted to positive ammonium ion, which could deteriorate positively charged vanadium ions' crossover by Gibbs-Donnan effect. There is reduction in proton conductivity may due to acid-base complexation between fS and Nafion side chains, but ion selectivity of proton to vanadium ion is enhanced by introducing fS to Nafion membranes. With the composite membranes of Nafion and fS, VRFBs maintain their discharge capacity up to 80% at a high current density of 150 mA/㎠ during 200 cycles.
