To investigate new potential application of a clay material for C/C composites, illite added C/C composites were prepared with various illite contents. The improvement of filler effect by illite size reduction was also investigated using wet ballmilling by evaluating illite/phenolic resin infiltration using bulk density and porosity measurements, chemical structural changes of the composites using XRD, and thermal oxidation stability in air of the composites using TGA. The size reduction of illite resulted in narrower particle size distribution and improved illite infiltration into carbon preform. And the resultant C/C composites prepared with illite had even more improved thermal oxidation stability in air, showing more increased IDTs up to $100^{\circ}C$, compared to those of the C/C composites with pristine illite, due to the SiC formation through carbothermal reduction between illite and carbon materials. The illite induced delay in oxidation of the illite-C/C composites was also observed and the delayed oxidation behavior was attributed to the layered structure of illite, which improved illite/phenol resin infiltration. Therefore, the potential use of illite as filler to improve oxidation stability of C/C composite can be promising. And the size reduction of illite can improve its effect on the desired properties of illite-C/C composites even more.
Pitch-binded activated carbon fiber(ACF)/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were prepared by Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios of anatase to ACF. The result of the textural surface properties demonstrated that there is a slight increase in the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area of composites with an increase of the amount of ACF. The surfaces structure morphologies of the composites were observed using an Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In the XRD patterns for all ACF/$TiO_2$ composites, the diffraction peaks showed the formation of anatase crystallites. The EDX spectra showed the presence of C, O and Si with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples were richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. From the photo-decomposition results, the excellent activity of the ACF/$TiO_2$ composites between c/$c_0$ for methylene blue and UV irradiation time could be attributed to both the effects of the photocatalysis of the supported $TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of activated carbon fiber and another carbon derived from pitch.
In the present work, a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite, filled with Zn-ion coated structural silica encapsulated with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), was synthesized using the conventional melt-blending technique in a sigma internal mixer. The catalytic activity of the Zn-ions (originating from the structural silica) towards the oxirane group (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA): encapsulating agent) was assessed by infrared spectroscopy. Two composites, each with a filler content of $2.5 wt\%$ were developed. The first one was obtained by melt blending the Zn-ion coated structural silica with LDPE in a co-rotating sigma internal mixer. The second one was obtained by melt blending the same LDPE, but with DGEBA encapsulated Zn-ion coated structural silica. Epoxy resin encapsulation of the Zn-ion coated structural silica resulted in its having good interfacial adhesion and a homogeneous dispersion in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the encapsulation of epoxy resin over the Zn-ion coated structural silica showed improvements in both the mechanical and thermal properties, viz. a $33\%$ increase in the elastic modulus and a rise in the onset degradation temperature from 355 to $371^{\circ}C$, in comparison to the Zn-ion coated structural silica.
In Li0.4Ca0.05AlP0.5Si0.75O4.5 composition glass, glass-ceramic having a near 100% crystallinity after nucleation heat treatment of 74$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and crystallization heat treatment of 90$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic after heat treatment of 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were fabricated with the addition of 4% TiO2 as a nucleating agent. With these materials a ball-on-disc type wear test was conducted in order to examine the effect of TiO2 whisker prepcipitation on ambient and high temperature wear properties of the glass-ceramic. Wear test results indicated that all specimens exhibited micro-fracture wear mechanism in ambient temperature. As temperature increased the wear rates of the materials were increased. However the in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic exhibited the lowest wear rate over the test temperature range. This resulted from the improvement of harness and fracture toughness of the material as the glass converted into the glass-ceramic followed by precipitation of TiO2 whiskers throughout the glass-ceramic matrix.
This paper explain about the development of environmental friendly, low cost and stable supply material i.e., rice husk and shell were used as micro incorporating bio waste filler. Those were processed by ball mill and analyzed through micro observation by FE-SEM, EDS and particle size distribution. The obtained filler was mixed with epoxy resin for the manufacturing of CFRP composite and study tensile properties. In EDS analysis main contents of rice husk and rice husk ash are C, O and Si. When rice husk was burned C and Si ration were increased. Shell powder has C, O and Ca. It caused $CaCO_3$ from shell. Surface weighted mean of rice husk powder is $6.19{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $14.77{\mu}m$. And it has rod type particles which caused hair and husk structure parts. Surface weighted mean of rice husk ash powder is $1.55{\mu}m$ and volume weighted means is $8.20{\mu}m$. Surface weighted mean of shell powder is $2.53{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $5.79{\mu}m$. The tensile decreased with increasing the content of micro filler in CFRP composites. In case of rice husk, the significant decrement of tensile strength was observed. and in case of shell powder, there is no effect of changes take place in tensile strength.
Statement of problem: Second-generation indirect composite resins have been improved flexural strength, compressive strength, hydrolytic degradation resistance, wear resistance compared to first-generation indirect composite resins, but there are still some problems as hydrolysis and low wear resistance. Some manufacturers claim that wear resistance of their materials has been improved, but little independent study has been published on wear properties of these materials and the properties specified in the advertising materials are largely derived from in-house or contracted testing. Purpose: This study was to evaluate the wear of indirect composite resins (SR Adore, Sinfony, Tescera ATL) and gold alloy against the human enamel. Material and method: Extracted human incisors and premolars were sectioned to $2{\times}2{\times}2mm$ cube and embedded in the clear resin and formed conical shaped antagonist to fit the jig of pin-on-disk tribometer. Total 20 antagonists were stored in distilled water. Five disk samples, 24mm in diameter and 1.5mm thick, were made for each of three groups of indirect composite resins and gold alloy group, and polished to #2,000 SiC paper on auto-polishing machine. Disk specimens were tested for wear against enamel antagonists. Wear test were conducted in distilled water using a pin-on-disk tribometer under condition (sliding speed 200rpm contact load 24N, sliding distance 160m). The wear of the enamel was determined by weighing the enamel antagonist before and after test, and the weight was converted to volumes by average density. The wear tracks were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometer to elucidate the wear mechanisms. Statistical analysis of the enamel wear volume, wear track depth and wear tract width of disk specimens were accomplished with one-way ANOVA and the means were compared for significant differences with Scheffe's test. Results: 1. The enamel wear was most in gold alloy, but there were no statistically significant differences among all the groups (P>.05). 2. In indirect composite resin groups, the group to make the most shallow depth of wear tract was Sinfony, followed by Tescera ATL, SR Adoro (P<.05). Gold alloy was shallower than Sinfony, but there was no statistically significant difference between Sinfony and gold alloy (P>.05). 3. The width of wear tract of SR Adore was larger than the other groups (P<.05), and there were no statistically significant differences among the other groups (P>.05). 4. SEM analysis revealed that Sinfony and gold alloy showed less wear scars after test, Tescera ATL showed more wear scars and SR Adore showed the most. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, Sinfony and gold alloy showed the least wear rates and showed similar wear patterns.
Two commercial alumina powders having different particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ and 3${\mu}$m were presintered at 1120$^{\circ}$C for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at 1100$^{\circ}$C for up to 4h to obtain the densified glass-alumina composites. The effect of alumina particle size on packing factor, microstructure, wetting, porosity and pore size, and mechanical properties of the composite was investigated. The optimum mechanical properties and compaction behavior were observed for the 3${\mu}$m alumina particle dispersed composite. The 3${\mu}$m alumina particle size and distribution for he preform were within 0.1 to 48${\mu}$m and bimodal and random orientation. The strength and the fracture toughness of the composite having 3${\mu}$m alumina particles were 519MPa and $4.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

High speed performance of ferroelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ (PZT) based capacitors is reported. La substitution up to 10% was performed to systematically lower the coercive and saturation voltages of epitaxial ferroelectric capacitors grown on Si using a ($Ti_{0.9}$ /$Al_{0.1}$ )N/Pt conducting barrier composite. Ferroelectric capacitors substituted with 10% La show significantly lower coercive voltage compared to capacitors with 0% and 3% La. This is attributed to a systematic decrease in the tetragonality (i.e., c/a ratio) of the ferroelectric phase. Furthermore, the samples doped with 10% La showed dramatically better retention and pulse width dependent polarization compared to the capacitors with 0% and 3% La. These capacitors show promise as storage elements in low power high density memory architectures.
Fatigue characteristics of ferroelectric $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ (PZT) based capacitors through donor doping is reported in this paper. La substitution up to 10% were carried out to study systematically the fatigue behaviors of epitaxial ferroelectric capacitors grown on Si using $(Ti_{0.9}Al_{0.1})N/Pt$ conducting barrier composite. Ferroelectric capacitors substituted with 10% La show sufficient low voltage switched polarization and fatigue free performance. Systematic decrease in the tetragonality of the ferroelectric phase (i.e., c/a ratio) results in the corresponding reduction in coercive voltage, sufficient remnant polarization at 1.5-3V, and good fatigue property.

Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) material of 30% SiC particulate based on A1 matrix was machined by drilling and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes. When drilling process was executed, surface fracture due to brittle property near the bottom was found. It was also found the possiblity of difficult shape of EDM process for MMC material, but few the research about basic EDM characteristics. Material Removal Rate(MRR) was examined for different conditions and the surface morphology was evaluated by roughness values and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) research. The higher the current is, the more MRR was obtained but the higher MRR was showed around 0.45 duty factor. The average roughness of EDMed surface was slightly changed with increased pulse current and increases with duty factor. The SEM photographs of EDMed surface showed recast region after melting.
