Since most merchant vessels are mainly influenced by the added resistance in an actual sea, they could be navigated more efficiently if this added resistance could be precisely predicted and then effectively reduced. In this paper, we have computed the effective horsepower based on the resistance performance in still water and then calculated the added resistance in regular wave in order to estimate a ship's propulsion performance on a voyage. Firstly, we have performed experiments using a model of KCS in a circulating water channel to estimate the flow characteristics around a container ship and the ship's resistance in still water. Then we have calculated the motion response function in regular wave as well as the values for the increase in resistance, and evaluated the ship's motion performance in waves according to the calculated response function. It was found that the resistance in waves increased because the ship's motion response value became larger as the ship's speed increased in the case of head sea. The effect of the added resistance could be reduced by maneuvering the ship to the encounter angle of $120^{\circ}$ in areas of long wavelengths and to head sea in areas of short wavelengths.

It is easy for a ship passing through confined waters to be exposed in dangers of collisions and grounding due to different hydrodynamic responses. Since marine accidents can cause significant impacts on environments, global economy, and human lives, it is necessary to study the effect of shallow water on hydrodynamic performance of a ship. In this paper, the effect of water depth on resistance performance was investigated using CFD analysis as an initial study for improving navigational safety of a large container ship under confined waters. After a CFD set-up for deep water condition was validated and verified by comparing CFD analysis with model test results, CFD calculations according to ship speed and water depth were conducted. The features were investigated in terms of tendency and physical knowledge related to resistance performance. The increase of resistance due to shallow water effect was reviewed with empirical formula suggested from SWABE JIP. Speed loss due to shallow water effect was additionally reviewed from estimated delivered power according to ship speed and water depth.

This paper aims to provide the most useful method of determining an optimum LCB position and design direction of fore- and aft-body hull shape for a SLBV. It is known that the SLBV has a lower length-to-beam ratio, larger Cb and simpler stern shape designed for the installation of azimuth thrusters comparing to those of conventional LNG carriers. Due to these specific particulars of SLBV, the optimum LCB position was very different to that of conventional LNG carrier. And various approaches were applied to determine the optimum fore- and aft-body hull shape. The design direction for the optimum hull-form was evaluated as the minimization of the total resistance which includes the wave-making resistance and form-drag with numerical simulation.

This study discusses data collection, calculation of wind and wave-induced resistance, and speed-power analysis of an 8,600 TEU container ship. Data acquisition system of the ship operator was improved to obtain the data necessary for the analysis, which was accomplished using SPA (Ship Performance Analysis, Park et al., 2019) in conformation with ISO15016:2015. From a previous operation profile of the container, the standard operating conditions of mean draft were 12.5 m and 13.6 m, which were defined with the mean stowage configuration of each condition. Model tests, including the load-variation test, were conducted to validate new ship performance and for the speed-power analysis. The major part of the added resistance of container ship is due to the wind. To check the reliability of wind-resistance calculation results, the resistance coefficients, added resistance, and speed-power analysis results using the Fujiwara regression formula (ISO15016:2015) and Computational fluid dynamics (Ryu et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2017) analysis were compared. Wind speed and direction measured using an anemometer were used for wind-resistance calculation and the wave resistance was calculated using the wave-height and direction-data from weather information. Also, measured water temperature was used to calculate the increase in resistance owing to the deviation in water density. As a result, the SPA analysis using measured data and weather information was proved to be valid and able to identify the ship's resistance propulsion performance. Even with little difference in the air-resistance coefficient value, both methods provide sufficient accuracy for speed-power analysis. The differences were unnoticeable when the speed-power analysis results using each method were compared. Also, speed-power analysis results of the 8,600 TEU container ship in two draft conditions show acceptable trends when compared with the model test results and are also able to show power increase owing to hull fouling and aging. Thus, results of speed-power analysis of the existing 8,600 TEU container ship using the SPA program appropriately exhibit the characteristics of speed-power performance in deal conditions.

The primary objective of the current work is to obviously analyze regarding effects of trim conditions of a ship on resistance performance using model test and CFD. Model tests at a towing tank are conducted to investigate resistance for trim conditions at the given same displacement. Measured resistance shows small but distinct differences according to trim conditions. However, these differences are difficult to be clarified by measured physical quantities and wave pattern analysis from model tests. CFD is employed for the assessment of resistance performance according to trim conditions. The flow computation is conducted considering free surface and dynamic trim using a commercial CFD code (STAR-CCM+). The initiative of the present work is to systematically demonstrate pressure resistance acting on each region of divided finite zones of ship surface along the length and draught direction of surface when pressure distribution on the ship is interpreted. Also, a standard to assess the pressure resistance applied on the divided regions of a ship is established.
Although there are many kinds of advanced ballast water management systems, pioneering studies for ballast-water free ship and minimal ballast water ship concepts are in progress. In this study, the existing alternatives of ballast water are reviewed and a new design concept is studied on the basis of the existing bulk carrier hull form. To develop a new design alternative which has minimal ballast for ballast water discharge free operation, the new concept should have technical feasibilities that are related to the role of the ballast water, berth access, loading constraints, etc. For this purpose, a simplified systems engineering basis design approach is adopted using a business model as the system analysis and control tool. To check the performance feasibility of the new concept, ship resistance performance is reviewed based on a model scale ship resistance performance analysis.
Vessels are traditionally optimized for a single condition, normally the contract speed at the design draft. The actual operating conditions quite often differ significantly. At other speed and draft combinations, adjusting the trim can often be used to reduce the hull resistance. Changing the trim is easily done by shifting ballast water. There are several ways to assess the effect of the trim on the hull resistance and fuel consumption, including in-service measurements, model tests, and CFD. In this paper, CFD is employed for the assessment of the resistance performance according to the trim conditions. The commercial CFD code of the STAR-CCM+ is utilized to evaluate the ship’s resistance performance on a 6,800 TEU container ship. To validate of the effectiveness of STAR-CCM+, the experimental result of the KCS hull form is compared with the result from STAR-CCM+. It is found that the total resistance of the 6,8000 TEU container ship was reduced by 2.6% in the case of a 1-m trim by head at 18knots.

Due to the rise of international oil prices, with the continued increase of vessel operating costs, profitability has gradually deteriorated in the some case of South Korea ferry shipping. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the resistance performance of passenger ship. Goose neck bulb can be one of the methods to improve the resistance performance of passenger ship. Goose neck bulb has been applied to passenger ships operated in Europe and large cruise line. But there is no application example in the passenger ship to be operated on a regular basis in the sea near Korea. It is needed to provide reference data that can be applied efficiently goose neck bulb on the medium-sized passenger ships. This study, intended for the medium-sized passenger ship operated short international routes, presents the design of the hull form that goose neck bulb has been applied. And the resistance performance of the designed hull confirmed by numerical simulation. The numerical simulation is performed while changing the local shape of the goose neck depending on the bulb parameters. This study finds bulb parameters and their range that can affect the resistance performance. Thus, it is possible to provide a foundation to develop the optimal design technique and regression analysis on the resistance performance and goose neck bulb.

Ships strengthened for navigation in ice encounter level ice, ice ridge and broken ice fields. Thus, the ship resistance in ice is a very critical concern to the designers of ice-going vessels. The objective of this study is to understand the physical aspects of ship performance in ice and to investigate the characteristics of the ship resistance in broken ice channels. In particular, this study identifies the ship resistance in ice associated with the broken ice channel width and the size of broken ice pieces. Model testings of towed-resistance condition in broken ice channels with three ship speeds were conducted in KRISO ice model basin. The influence of the ship resistance characteristics in broken ice channels for channel width and size of broken ice pieces was analyzed.

During the ship hull design process, resistance performance estimation is generally calculated by simulation using computational fluid dynamics. Since such hull resistance performance simulation requires a lot of time and computation resources, the time taken for simulation is reduced by CPU clusters having more than tens of cores in order to complete the hull design within the required deadline of the ship owner. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating resistance performance of ship hull by simulation using a graph neural network. This method converts the 3D geometric information of the hull mesh and the physical quantity of the surface into a mathematical graph, and is implemented as a deep learning model that predicts the future simulation state from the input state. The method proposed in the resistance performance experiment of simple hull showed an average error of about 3.5 % throughout the simulation.
