The main objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of NSC and HSC beams with stirrups. Main variables were the concrete compressive strength and amount of vertical stirrups. A total of 24 beams was tested; 4 beams without web reinforcement and 20 beams with web reinforcement in the form of vertical stirrups. Main variables were 2 different compressive strengths of concrete of 26.9MPa and 63.5MPa, 5 different spacing of stirrups of 200, 150, 120, 100 and 90mm. Therefore, the results were compared with the strengths predicted by the equations of ACI code 318-99 and other researchers. The shear reinforcement ratio, where the test beams were failed simultaneously under flexure and shear, were $0.63{\rho}_{vmax}$ for NSC beams and $0.53{\rho}_{vmax}$ for HSC beams, respectively. The ACI code equation was found to be very conservative for shear design.
One method of retrofitting concrete structures is to use fiber reinforced polymers (FRP). In this research, the shear, torsional and flexural strengthening of self-compacting reinforced concrete (RC) girders are fulfilled with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials. At first, for verification, the experimental results were compared with numerical modeling results obtained from ABAQUS software version 6.10. Then the reinforcing sheets were attached to concrete girders in one and two layers. Studying numerical results obtained from ABAQUS software showed that the girders stiffness decreased with the propagations of cracks in them, and then the extra stresses were tolerated by adhesive layers and GFRP and CFRP sheets, which resulted in increasing the bearing capacity of the studied girders. In fact, shear, torsion and bending strengths of the girders increased by reinforcing girders with adding GFRP and CFRP sheets. The samples including two layers of CFRP had the maximum efficiencies that were 90, 76 and 60 percent of improvement in shear, torsion and bending strengths, respectively. It is worth noting that the bearing capacity of concrete girders with adding one layer of CFRP was slightly higher than the ones having two layers of GFRP in all circumstances; therefore, despite the lower initial cost of GFRP, using CFRP can be more economical in some conditions.

In this study, the ultimate strengths of 229 simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams tested to shear failure were evaluated by the ACI 318-05's strut-tie model approach implemented with the presented indeterminate strut-tie model and its load distribution ratio. The ultimate strengths of the deep beams were also estimated by the experimental shear equations, design codes that were based on experimental and theoretical shear strength models, and current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the present strut-tie model and its load distribution ratio was examined through the comparison of the strength analysis results classified according to the prime design variables of the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete.
The modified compression field theory is already applied in shear problem at some code(AASHTO-1998) partly. Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is sum of the concrete shcar strength and the steel shear strength in the current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in the calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of concrete beam In the current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But The tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion In design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded in the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. This paper shows that the torsional moment strength of concrete is caused by the average principal tensile stress of concrete. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to two ACI codes (89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional moment strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.
Objectives: This study was performed to determine whether the combined use of one-bottle self-etch adhesives and composite resins from same manufacturers have better bond strengths than combinations of adhesive and resins from different manufacturers. Materials and Methods: 25 experimental micro-shear bond test groups were made from combinations of five dentin adhesives and five composite resins with extracted human molars stored in saline for 24 hr. Testing was performed using the wire-loop method and a universal testing machine. Bond strength data was statistically analyzed using two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Two way ANOVA revealed significant differences for the factors of dentin adhesives and composite resins, and significant interaction effect (p < 0.001). All combinations with Xeno V (Dentsply De Trey) and Clearfil $S^3$ Bond (Kuraray Dental) adhesives showed no significant differences in micro-shear bond strength, but other adhesives showed significant differences depending on the composite resin (p < 0.05). Contrary to the other adhesives, Xeno V and BondForce (Tokuyama Dental) had higher bond strengths with the same manufacturer's composite resin than other manufacturer's composite resin. Conclusions: Not all combinations of adhesive and composite resin by same manufacturers failed to show significantly higher bond strengths than mixed manufacturer combinations.
Statement of problem: Delamination of veneering porcelain from underlying ceramic substructures has been reported for zirconia-ceramic restorations. Colored zirconia cores for esthetics have been reported that their bond strength with veneered porcelain is weaker compared to white zirconia cores. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the shear bond strength by manufacturing the veneering porcelain on the colored zirconia core, using the layering technique and heat-pressing technique, and to evaluate the clinical stability by comparing the result of this with that of conventional metal ceramic system. Material and methods: A Metal ceramic (MC) system was tested as a control group. The tested systems were Katana zirconia with CZR (ZB) and Katana Zirconia with NobelRondo Press (ZP). Thirty specimens, 10 for each system and control, were fabricated. Specimen disks, 3 mm high and 12 mm diameter, were fabricated with the lost-wax technique (MC) and the CAD-CAM (ZB and ZP). MC and ZB specimens were prepared using opaque and dentin veneering ceramics, veneered, 3 mm high and 2.8 mm in diameter, over the cores. ZP specimens were prepared using heat pressing ingots, 3 mm high and 2.8mm in diameter. The shear bond strength test was performed in a Shear bond test machine. Load was applied at a cross-head speed of 0.50 mm/min until failure. Mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were analyzed with the One-way ANOVA. After the shear bond test, fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. Results: The mean shear bond strengths (SD) in MPa were MC control 29.14 (2.26); ZB 29.48 (2.30); and ZP 29.51 (2.32). The shear bond strengths of the tested systems were not significantly different (P > .05). All groups presented cohesive and adhesive failures, and showed predominance of cohesive failures in ceramic veneers. Conclusion: 1. The shear bond strengths of the tested groups were not significantly different from the control group (P >.05). 2. There was no significant different between the layering technique and the heat pressing technique in the veneering methods on the colored zirconia core. 3. All groups presented cohesive and adhesive failures, and showed predominance of cohesive failures in ceramic veneers.

Siliceous and calcareous deep-sea core sediments were collected by a multiple corer from the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, northeast equatorial Pacific, to compare vane shear strengths measured by two different apparatuses and in different places of on-board and on-land laboratories. The apparatuses were 1) a hand-held vane with four blades of $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm, and 2) a motorized shear vane system with four blades of $1.0{\times}0.88$ attached on a rotational viscometer. Depth profiles of shear strengths of core samples determined by the apparatuses do not show any consistent difference. Also, there is no consistent difference between shear strength values measured on-board and on-land laboratories after storing the core samples for three months in a cold room by a motorized shear vane system. However, there are considerable differences between depth profiles of shear strengths measured at four different points (holes) of a core sample. Moreover, significant differences among the profiles of different tube samples from a multiple corer within a sampling station were observed. Heterogeneity in physical properties of each depth and sediment column, possibly due to bioturbation and bottom current flows, is likely responsible for the differences in the geotechnical properties.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the microstructural changes of surface in the specimens, performing the shear bond strength testing. The currently most used non-precious alloys are nickel-chromium based alloys with or without beryllium. However, their biocompatibility has been questioned concerning possible damages to the health of the patient and professionals involved in the fabrication of prosthesis caused by long exposure to Ni and Be. An option to nickel-chromium alloys is the cobalt-chromium alloy, an alternative that does not sacrifice the physical properties of the metal porcelain systems. Studies in the animals substantially show that the cobalt-chromium alloys are relatively well tolerated, being therefore more biocompatible than the nickel-chromium alloys. Methods: Non-addition Be to nickel-chromium based alloy(Bellabond plus) and cobalt-chromium alloy which has been widely used(Wirobond C) fused with ZEO light porcelain classified control group and cobalt-chromium alloy which is developing alloy of Alphadent company in Korea(Alphadent alloy) fused with ZEO light porcelain classified experimental group. The specimens of $4mm{\times}4mm{\times}0.5mm$ were prepared as-cast and as-opaque to cast body to analyze the mechanical characteristic change, the microstructure of alloy surface. The phase change was used to observe through XRD analysis and OM/SEM was used to observe the surface of specimens as-cast and as-opaque to cast body. Chemical formation of their elements was measured with EDS. Then hardness was measured with Micro Vicker's hardness tester. Shear bond strength test thirty specimens of $10mm{\times}10mm{\times}2mm$ was prepared, veneered, 3mm high and 3mm in diameter, over the alloy specimens. The shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine(UTM) with a cross head speed of 0.5mm/min. Ultimate shear bond strength data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and the Scheffe's test (P<0.05). Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: The X-ray diffraction analysis results for the as-cast and as-opaque specimens showed that the major relative intensity of Bellabond plus alloy were changed smaller than Wirobond C and Alphadent Co-Cr based alloys. Results: Microstructural analysis results for the opaque specimens showed all the alloys increased carbides and precipitation(PPT). Alphadent Co-Cr based alloy showed the carbides of lamellar type. The Vickers hardness results for the opaque specimens showed Wirobond C and Alphadent Co-Cr based alloys were increaser than before ascast, but Bellabond plus alloy relatively decreased. The mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were: 33.11 for Wirobond C/ZEO light; 25.00 for Alphadent Co-Cr alloy/ZEO light; 18.02 for Bellabond plus/ZEO light. Conclusion: The mean shear bond strengths for Co-Cr and Ni-Cr based alloy were significantly different. But the all groups showed metal-metal oxide modes in shear bond strengths test at the interface.
Bis-GMA, the representative monomer of bonding resin, contributes to the rigidity of bonding layer. Hydrophilic monomer contributes to the permeability into dentin substrates while weaken the bonding layer due to its small molecular weight. The degree of conversion also contributes to the ultimate strength of the bonding layer. This study was performed for the correlation analysis of monomer ratio and dentin bonding strength via degree of conversion. 7 experimental bonding resins were prepared with Bis-GMA, ratio from 20% to 80% by 10% increment, and hydrophilic HEMA monomer. Their degree of conversion and shear bond strength to dentin were compared with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose adhesive, and the fractured surfaces were examined microscopically. The results were as follows; 1. The degree of conversion increased when, the ratio of Bis-GMA increased from 20% to 70%, whereas it decreased when the ratio of Bis-GMA was 80%. 2. Shear bond strengths of the experimental bonding resins of 80%, 70%, 60% ratio of Bis-GMA were significantly higher than those of the experimental bonding resin of 50% ratio of Bis-GMA and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose adhesive. Lower shear bond strengths were obtained with the experimental bonding resins of 40%, 30%, 20% ratio of Bis-GMA (p<0.05). 3. Adhesive fractures were associated with the bonding resins of the lower bond strength, while cohesive fractures within the bonding resin layer were associated with the bonding resins of higher bond strength. Bonding resins with shear bond strength higher than 18MPa showed some cohesive fractures within the composite resin or within the dentin. 4. Correlations between Bis-GMA ratio and the degree of conversion (r=0.826), between Bis-GMA ratio and shear bond strength (r=0.853), and between the degree of conversion and shear bond strength (r=0.786) were significant (p<0.05).

Recently, lean duplex stainless steel, STS329FLD with less nickel (reduced to 0.5~1.5%) has been developed as a substitute of austenitic stainless steel (8%~10.5% nickel in STS304) and included in Korean standards (KS). This paper investigates the block shear behavior of cold-formed duplex stainless steel (STS329FLD, nominal plate thickness of 1.5mm) fillet-welded connection with base metal fracture. Main variables are weld lengths in the longitudinal and the transverse directions of applied force ranged from 20mm to 50mm. As a result, specimens failed by typical block shear facture (the combination of gross section tensile fracture and shear fracture or shear yielding) and ultimate strength of the specimens got higher with the increase of weld length. Block shear fracture strengths predicted by current design specifications (KBC2016/AISC2016 and EC3) and existing proposed equations for welded connections by Topkaya, Oosterhof & Driver and Lee et al. were compared with test strengths. KBC2016/AISC2016 and EC3 design specifications underestimated block shear strength of STS329FLD welded connections by on average 24%, 29%, respectively and Oosterhof & Driver, Topkaya and Lee et al's equations overestimated the ultimate strength of the welded connection by the range of 3% to 44%.
