"Urban traditional housing" means a type of urban housing which retains characteristics of traditional Korean houses for ordinary people. It is a form of housing created in the process in which traditional Korean ways of life are applied to swift modernization. In Korea's traditional housing, the "court" functioned as a living space that promoted family bonding. The space of the court still remains in the urban traditional housing. However, rapid popularization of the westernized housing form, i.e., apartments, resulted in standardization and westernization of our housing and living patterns, and as a result, the court in urban traditional housing came to lose its original meaning. The objects of this study are residents of urban traditional housing. By studying them, this research aims, firstly, to understand the meaning of the inner court, secondly to analyze correlation between the residents' consciousness of the inner court and their use of the space, and ultimately to find various possible forms of our future housing. For this research, twenty six houses in the Gahoe-dong area in which urban traditional houses are densely built up were investigated. According to the result of this research, the inner court in current urban traditional housing is a space existing inside a house but directly exposed to outer air at the same time. It is a private but shared space. It contributes to forming a pleasant atmosphere by facilitating ventilation and providing sunlight. In addition, it is a living space that actively reflects the Korean living style that values family life.
The purpose of this study is to understand modernization process of korean housing during the past one century. To following up the changes of everyday lives of common peoples, magazines, news papers, tourist's records and gossip items were collected and interpreted from the microscopic point of view. In this study arguments on 'modernity' of korean housing was focused on some issues, thus, separation, differentiation, individualization, as well as privatization. Concrete discourses are; firstly, spatial isolation of housing and urban place each other, secondly, functional division of inner spaces of housing, and lastly, guarantee of privacy sphere. Historical changes of housing showed some meaningful phenomena. Before modernization housing was place of reproduction and consume at the same time. However after modern urban space came into existence and work and rest were separated, housing gained only mono function. Thus, housing have only one meaning as private place for nuclear family, that is "Home, Sweet Home." Instead of past multi-functional rooms, functional prescribed rooms, for example, dinning room, were newly born. In the past, the boundary between public and private sphere was not clear. For examples, everyday experiences of family were extended to the street and in the house in most cases spaces were shared. But after modernization the scale of individual spaces become larger and private life can be secured. Consequently, history of everyday life from traditional agricultural society to industrialized modern society demonstrates the structural context between the micro and macro dimension in the fields of human life. In other words, everyday lives and macro history response each other and create new perception of time-space structure in the modern housing.

Also it was all common that the housing facility had common diningroom laundry room once, and activity room. The type of the common spaces was categorized into three types, the centralized type where the shared space was located at the center of the housing facilities, the distributed type, depending on the degree of separation between common spaces and units, and another each building type. 3. The kinds of units was classified into studio, oneroom, one bedroom and two bedroom. 4. Since 1990s, we have achieved a certain level of success in standardization of design, construction, and material on housing and public buildings with the national-level promotion. A practical connecting device that can synthesize all the serial processes is required to maximize the effect of construction material standardization. However, desired outcome of the standardization is not achieved yet because these serial standards and notification practices are decided by each part of the process and some are congested. In this study, we aim to improve a general organizational system of Korean Industrial Standard (KS) which is the most fundamental tool for the standardization of construction materials moving from a conventional idea that the standard is only for the material and components producers to a concept that can also be shared by the designers and construction workers. To achieve this, we propose an improvement plan for the Korean Industrial Standard in the perspective of three-tier classification system.

The subjects valued 'personality factor' in the housing awareness. 2) Regarding preference of house mate type, participants preferred a person who has similar lifestyle and in the same gender. 3) As for the space sharing, the subjects didn't want to share a bathroom and shower. Also, they preferred medium or large scale dormitory layout type to small sized apartment type. 4) The most positive aspect of house sharing was 'Reduction of rental and maintenance cost'. On the other hand, 'Difference of daily life pattern' was the most negative aspect of house sharing. 5) In case of services and community spaces, they preferred 'delivery storage service' and 'coin-operated laundry facility'.
The purpose of this study was to compare urban and rural seniors' perceptions on the eight aspects of the World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities (AFC) initiative on Jeju Island, South Korea. Face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires were administered to 497 persons aged 65+ living on Jeju Island. Findings suggested that urban and rural held significantly different perceptions on five aspects of AFC (outdoor space and buildings, housing, civic participation and employment, community support and health services, and respect and social inclusion). Predictors of overall AFC score for all participants included age and living in a single-family home. Among urban dwellers, monthly household income and length of residence predicted AFC score while among rural seniors, predictors of AFC included educational attainment. To make communities more age-friendly, perspectives of older residents should be sought, shared, and reflected in policy and different strategies and priorities should be developed specific to urban and rural areas.
This qualitative research was designed to explore the use of housing among Korean Chinese people in Harbin, China. Focusing on the use which based on the epistemology of housing adjustment, this was particularly designed to examine its cultural assimilation and acculturation on the way of life course, it employed the in-depth interview on the oral history of 5 interviewees in their 60s and 70s, individualized interviews were conducted from May 28 to 31 in 2010. Key findings were summarized as follows; 1. The free market reform in China resulted in privatization that allowed respondents to become homeowners, and the ownership was viewed as part of family asset centered upon a sense of solidarity. 2. Although homeowners in multi-story houses were responsible to decorate interior spaces, the common features in using interior spaces were found: entrance had no thresholds; kitchen was small, lack of storage cabinets, tile-flooring; washers were installed inside bathroom; and newly built apartment didn't have proper space to store Korean fermented foods. It was observed that housing adaptation outweighed housing adjustment. Those who used to live in Chinese houses with indoor-wearing-shoes or Russian houses with indoor-wearing-slippers were receptive to the use of dining table and bed, and the community heating system discouraged the use of individual electric water heater because of high electricity cost. 3. In daily life, eating habit wasn't much changed to the Chinese style, meals were shared, dish sterilizer was popular, and Kimchi fridge wasn't used. Because of the influence of the Chinese culture, such Korean traditions as ancestral rites and bedroom allocation tradition faded away, but traditional family values remained unchanged. In conclusion, Korean Chinese people experience normative housing deficits and adaptation selectively incurred. It's implied that residential design meets the needs resulting from the dual culture in terms of cultural assimilation and acculturation.
