  • In this study, decompositive optimization method of two levels was selected to optimize effectively the geometry of the truss which takes the multi-loading condition, and the allowable stress, bucking stress, displacement and natural frequency constraints into consideration. The algorithm of this study is made up of sectional optimization using the feasible direction method in level 1, and geometrical optimization employing Powell's one-direction search method which menimizes only objictive function in level 2. The results of this study acquired by beenning applied to structural model of the truss are as follows : 1. It is verified that the algorithm of this study effectively converges, independent of the initial geometry of the truss and the applied various constraints. 2. The optimum goemetry of the truss varies more considerably according to the constraints selected. 3. Under the condition of the same design, the weight of the truss can be decreased more considerably by means of optimizing even the geometry of truss than by means of optimizing the section of truss while fixing geometrical configuration of it, even though there might be a little difference according to the initial geometry of the truss and the design condition.

  • It is essential to obtain accurate and highly reliable streamflow data for quantitative management for water resources. Thereafter such real-time streamflow gauging methods as ultrasonic flowmeter and index-velocity are introduced recently. Since these methods calculate flowrate through entire cross-section by measuring partial velocities of it, rational and theoretical basis are necessary for accurate estimation of discharge. The purpose of the present study lies in analysis on the applicability of Chiu#s(1987, 1988) two dimensional velocity distribution equations by applying them to natural rivers and by comparing simulated velocity distributions with observed ones obtained with ADCP. Maximum and mean velocities are calculated from observed data to estimate entropy parameter M. Such isovel shape parameters as h and $\beta_i$ are estimated by object function based on least squares criterion. In case optimized parameters are applied, Chiu#s velocity distributions fairly well simulate observed ones. By using 14 simulated data sets which have relatively high correlation coefficients, properties of parameters are analyzed and h, $\beta_i$ are estimated for velocity-unknown river sections. When estimated parameters are adopted for verification, simulated velocity distributions well reproduce real ones. Finally, calculated discharges display rough agreement with measured data. The results of the present study mean that if parameters related are properly estimated, Chiu#s velocity distribution is likely to reproduce the real one of natural rivers.

  • The rectangular resonant cavity was designed and characterized as a microwave plasma source for focused ion beam. The optimum cavity was calculated analytically and analyzed in detail by using HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator). Since the resonant cavity can be affected by the permittivity of quartz chamber and plasma, the cavity is designed to be changeable in one direction. By observing the microwave input power at which the breakdown begins, the optimum cavity length for breakdown is measured and compared with the calculated one, showing in good agreement with the optimum length reduced by 10cm according to the permittivity change in the presence of quartz chamber. The shape of breakdown power curve as a function of pressure appears to be similar to Paschen-curve. After breakdown, plasma densities increase with microwave power and the reduced effective permittivity in the cavity with plasma results in larger optimum length. However, it is not possible to optimize the cavity condition for high density plasmas with increased input power, because too high input power causes expansion of density cutoff region where microwave cannot penetrate. For more accurate microwave cavity design to generate high density plasma, plasma column inside and outside the density cutoff region needs to be treated as a conductor or dielectric.

  • The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the usage of microtremor in estimation of subsurface structure and ground response to strong ground motion. To accomplish the purpose, the current status of microtremor study are reviewed and microtremors recorded at several stations are analysed. First of all, the stability of microtremor is examined through the analysis of microtremors recorded for 80 seconds per hour during the time from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for eight hours at night time. It is found that the shape of microtremor spectra of low frequency below 10Hz is approximately invariable with time and the spectra contain informations about subsurface structure. The subsurface structures estimated from the predominant frequency determined from the recorded microtremors are compared with the known ones from geophysical surveys at several stations in Kyungju. The comparison of structures shows rough agreements at most stations. Horizontal to vertical spectral ratio(HVSR) technique for microtremor has been proposed as an indirect method to determine ground response to strong ground motion. The HVSR for microtremors recorded in Kyungju is calculated and compared with theoretical transfer function calculated from the known structures. The comparison shows rough coincidence of the peak frequency of spectra between them.

  • In the present study, the optimization of the main particulars of a ship using AI-based design search techniques was investigated. For the design search techniques, the SHERPA algorithm by HEEDS was applied, and CFD analysis using STAR-CCM+ was applied for the calculation of resistance performance. Main particulars were automatically transformed by modifying the main particulars of the ship at the stage of preprocessing using JAVA script and Python. Small catamaran was chosen for the present study, and the main dimensions of the length, breadth, draft of demi-hull, and distance between demi-hulls were considered as design variables. Total resistance was considered as an objective function, and the range of displaced volume considering the arrangement of the outfitting system was chosen as the constraint. As a result, the changes in the individual design variables were within ±5%, and the total resistance of the optimized hull form was decreased by 11% compared with that of the existing hull form. Throughout the present study, the resistance performance of small catamaran could be improved by the optimization of the main dimensions without direct modification of the hull shape. In addition, the application of optimization using design search techniques is expected for the improvement in the resistance performance of a ship.

  • A homologous series of linear liquid crystal dimers, ${\alpha},{\omega}$-bis(4-nitroazobenzene-4'-carbonyloxy)alkanes (NATWESn, n = 2~8, 10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) have been synthesized, and the thermal behavior of the series has been investigated. All the dimers formed enantiotropic nematic phases. The nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of the dimers and their entropy variation at the phase transition showed a large odd-even effect as a function of n. This behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the spacer on varing the parity of the spacer. The thermal stability and degree of order in the nematic phase and the magnitude of the odd-even effect of NATWESn were very similar to those of the corresponding ether compounds, while they were significantly different from those of the monomesogenic compounds, 4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxy}alkanoyl chlorides and the side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers, the poly[1-{4-(4'-nitrophenylazo) phenoxycarbonylalkanoyloxy}ethylene]s. The results were discussed in terms of the 'irtual trimer model'by Imrie.

  • Shorelines should be extracted with consistency because they are the reference for determining the shape of a country. Even in the same area, inconsistent minimum vertex intervals cause inconsistencies in the coastline length, making it difficult to acquire reliable primary data for national policy decisions. As the shoreline length cannot be calculated consistently for shorelines produced by determining the arbitrary distance between points below 1m, a methodology to calculate consistent shoreline length using the minimum vertex interval is proposed herein. To compare our results with the shoreline length published by KHOA(Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency) and analyze the change in shoreline length according to the minimum vertex interval, target sites was selected and the grid overlap of the shoreline was determined. Based on the comparison results, minimum grid sizes and the minimum vertex interval can be determined by deriving a polynomial function that estimates minimum grid sizes for determining consistent shoreline lengths. By comparing public shoreline lengths with generalized shoreline lengths using various grid sizes and by analyzing the characteristics of the shoreline according to vertex intervals, the minimum vertex intervals required to achieve consistent shoreline lengths could be estimated. We suggest that the minimum vertex interval methodology by quantitative evaluation of the determined grid size may be useful in calculating consistent shoreline lengths. The proposed method by minimum vertex interval determination can help derive consistent shoreline lengths and increase the reliability of national shorelines.

  • An undisturbed healing process without micromotion at the implant-bone interface is essential for achievement of osseointegration of dental implant. Therefore, initial stability was advocated as prerequisite for successful clinical outcome. Adequate bone quality and quantity were important to achieve initial stability and to prevent early failures. However there were few published data available regarding the effect of design change in implant geometry on initial stability of the implants. The purpose of the current study was to assess the initial stability of various designs of implants when placed into artificial bone materials of varying qualities and shapes of insertion holes. Within the scope of this study, the following results were drawn. Bone quality was major importance to achieve initial stability. Initial stability was higher on GS II which had additional design feature of double thread. With a tapered design of implant such as GS III showed a higher initial stability than straight one. An insertion hole with the similar shape of implant would lead to reduce a compression force on cortical bone and enhance a bone anchorage on cancellous bone.

  • We designed and fabricated a bidirectional optical transceiver module for low cost access network. An integrated chip forming a pin-PD on an 1.3 urn FP-LD was assembled by flip-chip bonding on a Si optical bench, a single mode fiber with an angled end facet was aligned passively with the integrated chip on V-groove of Si-optical bench. Gaussian beam theory was applied to evaluate the coupling coefficients as a function of some parameters such as alignment distance, angle of fiber end facet, vertical alignment error. The theory is also used to search the bottle-neck between transmittance and receiving coupling efficiency in the bi-directional optical system. Tn this paper, we confirmed that reduction of coupling efficiency by the vertical alignment error between laser beam and fiber core axis can be compensated by controlling the fiber facet angle. In the fabrication of sub-module, a'||'&'||' we made such that the fiber facet have a corn shape with an angled facet only core part, the reflection of transmitted laser beam from the fiber facet could be minimized below -35 dE in alignment distance of 2: 30 /J.m. In the same condition, transmitted output power of -12.1 dEm and responsivity of 0.2. AIW were obtained.

  • In this study, we introduce ASM-based face recognition classifier and its design methodology with the aid of 2-dimensional 2-directional hybird preprocessing algorithm. Since the image of face recognition is easily affected by external environments, ASM(active shape model) as image preprocessing algorithm is used to resolve such problem. In particular, ASM is used widely for the purpose of feature extraction for human face. After extracting face image area by using ASM, the dimensionality of the extracted face image data is reduced by using $(2D)^2$hybrid preprocessing algorithm based on LDA and PCA. Face image data through preprocessing algorithm is used as input data for the design of the proposed polynomials based radial basis function neural network. Unlike as the case in existing neural networks, the proposed pattern classifier has the characteristics of a robust neural network and it is also superior from the view point of predictive ability as well as ability to resolve the problem of multi-dimensionality. The essential design parameters (the number of row eigenvectors, column eigenvectors, and clusters, and fuzzification coefficient) of the classifier are optimized by means of ABC(artificial bee colony) algorithm. The performance of the proposed classifier is quantified through yale and AT&T dataset widely used in the face recognition.
