The problem of constrained sequencing of a set of jobs on a conveyor system with the objective of minimizing setup cost is investigated in this paper. A setup cost is associated with extra material, labor, or energy required due to the change of attributes in consecutive jobs at processing stations. A finite set of attributes is considered in this research. Sequencing is constrained by the availability of conveyor junctions. The problem is motivated by the paint purge reduction problem at a major U.S. automotive manufacturer. We first model a diverging junction with a sequence-independent setup cost and predefined attributes as an assignment problem and this model is then extended for a more general situation by relaxing the initial assumptions in various ways.

This research investigates the problem of minimizing setup costs in resequencing jobs having first-in, first-out(FIFO) constraints at conveyorized production or assembly systems. Sequence changing at conveyor junctions in these systems is limited due to FIFO restriction. We first define the general problem of resequencing jobs to workstations satisfying precedence relationships between jobs(Generalized Sequential Ordering Problem, GSOP). Then we limit our scope to FIFO precedence relationships which is the conveyor selection problem at a diverging junction(Diverging Sequential Ordering Problem, DSOP), modeling it as a 0-1 integer program. With the capacity constraint removed, we show that the problem can be modeled as an assignment problem. In addition, we proposed and evaluated the heuristic algorithm for the case where the capacity constraint cannot be removed. Finally, we discuss the case study which motivated this research and numerical results.

This paper considers a multi-stage flowshop scheduling Problem where the setup times of jots depend on immediately preceding jobs. Three heuristics algorithms, CAMPBELL, PEIDAN and CAMRING are proposed. The performance measure is a minimization of makespan. The parameters of simulation model are PS(ratio of the processing times to setup times), M(number of machines), and N(number of job). This simulation model for each algorithm is a 4$\times$3$\times$3 factorial design with 360 observations. The makespan of the proposed heuristic algorithms is compared with the optimal makespan obtained by the complete enumeration of schedules. This yardstick of comparison is defined as a relative error. The mean relative error of CAMPBELL, PEIDAN, and CAMRING algorithms are 4.353%, 7.908%, and 8.578% respectively. The SPSS, is used to analyse emphirical results. The experimental results show that the three factors are statistically significant at 5% level.

As internet telephony services based on Session initiation Protocol (SIP) enter the spotlight as marketable technology, many products based on SIPs have been developed and utilized for home and office telephony services. The call connection of an internet phone is classified into specific call connections and group call connections. Group call connections have a forking function which delivers the message to all of the group members. This function requires excessive message control for a call connection and creates heavy traffic in the network. In the internet cail system model. most of the call-setup messages are directed to the proxy server during a short time period. This heavy message load brings an unwanted delay in message processing and. as a result, call setup can not be made. To solve the delay problem, we simplified the analysis of the call-setup message in the proxy server, and processed the forking function distributed for the group call-setup message. In this thesis, a new system model to minimize the load is proposed and the subsequent implementation of this model demonstrates the performance improvement.

This paper is to analyze the cycle time of the vendor in a single-vendor multi-buyers supply chain. The vendor is the manufacturer and the buyers are the retailers. The cycle time of the vendor is the elapse time from the beginning time of the production to the beginning time of the next production. The cycle time of the vendor that minimizes the total cost in a supply chain is analyzed. The cost factors are the production setup cost and the inventory holding cost of the vendor, the ordering cost and the inventory holding cost of the retailers. The cycle times of the vendor obtained with the costs of the vendor is compared with those obtained with the costs of the vendor and the retailers. Various numerical examples are tested if the cycle times of the vendor for both methods are the same.
For the efficient business, the telecommunication providers should have an attention for the minimization of the basic setup cost to implement the network infrastructure. Furthermore, the provision of the quality of service (QoS) to the service users is crucial for the service providers and vendors. In this paper, we propose the new algorithm to provide the user's QoS under the various traffic in the broadband convergence network. Using the NS-2 network simulator, we evaluate the QoS for the proposed algorithm, and compare those with the results of the previous differentiated service network.
Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) plays a key role by linking CAD and CAM. Given CAD data of a part, CAPP has to recognize manufacturing features of the part. Despite the long history of research on feature recognition, its research results have rarely been transferred into industry. One of the reasons lies in the separation of feature recognition and process planning. This paper proposes to integrate the two activities through AI techniques, and presents efforts for manufacturable feature recognition, setup minimization, feature dependency construction, and generation of an optimal machining sequence.

In this study, data collection delay time generated in bus information system is analysed and improvement on system reliability by minimizing the delay time is suggested. To minimize the data collection delay time (call setup time), factors on data collection phase are analyzed. Each connecting time that it occurs from wireless communication during data collection phase, is selected as a main effective variable and a model for selecting an optimum communication point to minimize the effect of data delay time by each connecting time is suggested. In this model, minimization of the point between the time carrying out wireless communication and vehicle moving time, is calculated and the difference between the bus arrival time and information delivered time to the passenger is reduced. The test results for the proposed model in BIS using a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) communication show that delay time in real system operation has been improved. The minimum data collection delay time based on optimal communication position leads to the better reliability for Bus Information System. This study can be applied to the selection of optimal communication position and detection position instead of empirical methods.
An effective methodology is reported for the optimal design of multisite batch production/transportation and storage networks under uncertain demand forecasting. We assume that any given storage unit can store one material type which can be purchased from suppliers, internally produced, internally consumed, transported to or from other plant sites and/or sold to customers. We further assume that a storage unit is connected to all processing and transportation stages that consume/produce or move the material to which that storage unit is dedicated. Each processing stage transforms a set of feedstock materials or intermediates into a set of products with constant conversion factors. A batch transportation process can transfer one material or multiple materials at once between plant sites. The objective for optimization is to minimize the probability averaged total cost composed of raw material procurement, processing setup, transportation setup and inventory holding costs as well as the capital costs of processing stages and storage units. A novel production and inventory analysis formulation, the PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, provides useful expressions for the upper/lower bounds and average level of the storage inventory. The expressions for the Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the optimization problem can be reduced to two sub-problems. The first yields analytical solutions for determining lot sizes while the second is a separable concave minimization network flow subproblem whose solution yields the average material flow rates through the networks for the given demand forecast scenario. The result of this study will contribute to the optimal design and operation of large-scale supply chain system.

An effective methodology is reported for determining the optimal lot size of batch processing and storage networks which include uncertain demand forecasting. We assume that any given storage unit can store one material type which can be purchased from suppliers, internally produced, infernally consumed, transported to or from other sites and/or sold to customers. We further assume that a storage unit is connected to all processing and transportation stages that consume/produce or move the material to which that storage unit is dedicated. Each processing stage transforms a set of feedstock materials or intermediates into a set of products with constant conversion factors. A batch transportation process can transfer one material or multiple materials at once between sites. The first yields analytical solutions for determining lot sires while the second is a separable concave minimization network flow subproblem whose solution yields the average material flow rates through the networks for the given demand forecast scenario. The result of this study will contribute to the optimal design and operation of the global supply chain.
