  • This paper proposes a new series-connected diode rectifier which draws sinusoidal input currents. The proposed rectifier system is configured by adding an auxiliary circuit to the conventional 12-pulse series-connected diode rectifier and employing a current injection technique. A low kVA($0.02P_{\circ}$(PU) ) active current source injects a triangular current into the interphase reactor of the diode rectifier. The current injection results in near sinusoidal input current from the utility with less than 1% THD. The resulting system is suitable for high voltage and high power applications. Experimental and simulation results are provided from a 220V, 3kVA prototype rectifier system.

  • The current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using series connected two coils with twice triggering operation, which consists of series connected two coils and two superconducting (SC) modules with the inserting resistance, was analyzed. The feature of the suggested SFCL is that it can limit the fault current by triggering either one SC module or two SC modules comprising the SFCL depending on the amplitude of the fault current. To verify the current limiting operation of the suggested SFCL, the short-circuits in the fault location with the different fault currents were tested and its useful operations were described through the analysis on the tested results.

  • This paper proposes an input-series-output-parallel connected ZVS full bridge converter with interleaved control for photovoltaic power conditioning systems (PV PCS). The input-series connection enables a fully modular power-system architecture, where low voltage and standard power modules can be connected in any combination at the input and/or at the output, to realize any given specifications. Further, the input-series connection enables the use of low-voltage MOSFETs that are optimized for a very low RDSON, thus, resulting in lower conduction losses. The system costs decrease due to the reduced current, and the volumes of the output filters due to the interleaving technique. A topology for a photovoltaic (PV) dc/dc converter that can dramatically reduce the power rating and increase the efficiency of a PV system by analyzing the PV module characteristics is proposed. The control scheme, consisting of an output voltage loop, a current loop and input voltage balancing loops, is proposed to achieve input voltage sharing and output current sharing. The total PV system is implemented for a 10-kW PV power conditioning system (PCS). This system has a dc/dc converter with a 3.6-kW power rating. It is only one-third of the total PV PCS power. A 3.6-kW prototype PV dc/dc converter is introduced to experimentally verify the proposed topology. In addition, experimental results show that the proposed topology exhibits good performance.

  • The problem of designing an experiment to estimate the reliability of a system that has N subsystems connected in series where each subsystem n has n $T_n$ components connected in parallel is investigated both theoretically and by simulation. An accelerated sampling sheme is introduced. It is shown that the accelerated sampling scheme is asymptotically optimal as the total number of units goes to infinity. Numerical comparisons for a system that has two subsystems connected in series where each subsystem has two components connected in parallel are also given. They indicate that the accelerated sampling scheme performs better than the batch sequential sampling scheme and is nearly optimal.

  • Operating wind turbine generators at maximum power point requires maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control methods. However, conventional methods cannot track the appropriate maximum power point in situations involving wind turbine systems based on a series operation strategy. These systems comprise one or more local maximum power points, and conventional methods can detect only one local maximum power point closed by a current operation point. This study proposes an advanced MPPT method for the series operation strategy of a small, grid-connected wind turbine system. In determining the appropriate maximum point, operations at certain local maximum power points are analyzed. The results show one appropriate point, which is tracked by the proposed MPPT method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results.

  • This paper proposes a novel UPFE based on H-bridge modules, isolated through single-phase multi-winding transformers. The dynamic performance of proposed system was analyzed by simulation with EMTDC, assuming that the UPFC is connected with the 138-kV transmission line of one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The proposed system can be directly connected to the transmission line without series injection transformers. It has flexibility in expanding the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridge modules.

  • Three nearly identical superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) were connected in series to increase the voltage ratings. A slight difference in the quench starting point of individual SFCL units produced significantly imbalanced power distribution when connected in series. The imbalance was successfully removed by connecting a shunt resistor to one SFCL in parallel. 1.2 kV SFCL was designed with five current limiting elements and two or three shunt resistors.

  • It is desired to estimate the reliability of a system that has two subsystems connected in series where each subsystem has two components connected in parallel. A batch sequential sampling scheme is introduced. It is shown that the batch sequential sampling scheme is asymptotically optimal as the total number of units goes to infinity. Numerical comparisons indicate that the batch sequential sampling scheme performs better than the balanced sampling scheme and is nearly optimal.
