An optimum design algorithm of PSC box girder bridges using design sensitivity analysis is proposed in this paper. For the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, approximated reanalysis techniques using design sensitivity analysis are introduced. And also to save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through approximated structural responses is proposed. A design sensitivity analysis of structural response is executed by automatic differentiation(AD). The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm, compared with conventional algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical example.
To design a structural or a mechanical system with the best performance, the main procedure of a typical design usually consists of repeated modifications of design parameters and the investigation of the system response for each set of these parameters. But this procedure requires much time, effort and experience. Sensitivity analysis can provide systematic information for improving performance of a system. The author has studied on the development of the structural analysis algorithm and suggested recently the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is very suitable algorithm to a personal computer because the concept of the TSCM is based on the transfer of the nodal stiffness coefficients which are related to force and displacement vectors at each node. In this paper, a new sensitivity analysis algorithm using the concept of the TSCM is formulated for the computation of state variable sensitivity in static problems. The trust of the proposed algorithm is confirmed through the comparison with the computation results using existent sensitivity analysis algorithm and reanalysis for computation models.
Design sensitivity analysis of a mechanical system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the design sensitivity analysis of railway vehicle systems, using the direct differentiation method. The cartesian coordinate is employed as the generalized coordinate. The governing equations of the design sensitivity analysis are formulated as the differential equations. Design sensitivity analysis of railway vehicle systems is performed to show the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.
This describes a study on the support location optimizations of the beams using the genetic algorithm and the sensitivity analysis. The genetic algorithm is a probabilistic method searching the optimum at several points simultaneously and requiring only the values of the object and constraint functions. It has therefore more chances to find the global solution and can be applied to the various problems. Nevertheless, it has such a shortcoming that it takes too many calculations, because it is ineffective in local search. While the traditional method using sensitivity analysis is of great advantage in searching the near optimum. thus the combination of the two techniques will make use of the individual advantages, that is, the superiority in global searching form the genetic algorithm and that in local searching form the sensitivity analysis. In this thesis, for the practical applications, the analysis is conducted by FEB ; and as the shapes of structures are taken as the design variation, it requires re-meshing for every analysis. So if it is not properly controlled, the result of the analysis is affected and the optimized solution amy not be the real one. the method is efficiently applied to the problems which the traditional methods are not working properly.
A newly developed optimization method which uses the genetic algorithm combined with the sensitivity analysis is presented in this paper. The genetic algorithm is a probabilistic method, searching the optimum at several points simultaneously, requiring only the values of the object and constraint functions. It has therefore more chances to find global solution and can be applied various problems. Nevertheless, it has such shortcomings that even it approaches the optimum rapidly in the early stage, it slows down afterward and it can't consider the constraints explicitly. It is only because it can't search the local area near the current points. The traditional method, on the other hand, using sensitivity analysis is of great advantage in searching the near optimum. Thus the combination of the two techniques makes use of the individual advantages, that is, the superiority both in global searching by the genetic algorithm and in local searching by the sensitivity analysis. Application of the method to the several test functions verifies that the method suggested is very efficient and powerful to find the global solutions, and that the constraints can be considered properly.
In this paper, the authors formulate the sensitivity analysis algorithm for the natural frequency of a torsional shafting by expanding the transfer stiffness coefficient method. The basic concept of the present algorithm is based on the transfer of sensitivity stiffness coefficient, which is the derivative of stiffness coefficient with respect to design parameter, at every node from the first node to the last node in analytical model. The effectiveness of the present algorithm is confirmed by comparing the results of the sensitivity analysis and those of the reanalysis for the natural frequencies of a torsional shafting with a constant cross section. In numerical calculation, the design parameter is the diameter of the shaft element of the torsional shafting.
A numerical approach for performing kinematic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems is presented. Compared with the conventional analytical methods, which require explicit derivation of sensitivity equations, the proposed numerical method can be applied to any type of suspension systems without obtaining sensitivity equations, once any kinematic analysis procedure is established. To obtain sensitivity equations, a numerical differentiation algorithm that uses the third order Lagrange polynomial is developed. The algorithm efficiently and accurately computes the sensitivity of various vehicle static design factors with respect to kinematic design variables. Through a suspension design problem, the validity and usefulness of the method is demonstrated.
This paper presents a 3D shape optimization algorithm for electromagnetic devices using the design sensitivity analysis with finite element method. The structural deformation analysis based on the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress is used for mesh renewing. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are derived for the 3D finite element method with edge element. The results of sensitivity analysis are used as the input data of the structural analysis to calculate the relocation of the nodal points. This method makes it possible that the new mesh of analysis region can be obtained from the initial mesh without regeneration. The proposed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet pole to net a uniform flux density at the target region.
An optimum design algorithm using efficient reanalysis is proposed for reliability-based optimization problems formulated as the minimization of initial cost and expected failure cost with reliability constraints. The reliability-based optimization is high cost to evaluate objective function and constraints needed reliability analysis. Therefore the sensitivity analysis of reliability index for approximated reanalysis is necessary. In this paper, three solution approaches are suggested and tested. The approaches include : (1) sensitivity analysis using finite difference; (2) sensitivity analysis using automatic differentiation (AD); and (3) sensitivity analysis with respect to intermediate variables using AD. Numerical example is optimized to show the reliability and effectiveness of the new algorithm.
This paper presents a new eigenvalue sensitivity analysis method based on AESOPS algorithm. The additional calculation steps are derived from the original AESOPS algorithm. The additional calculation steps are performed directly from the AESOPS algorithm after iteratively calculating electro-mechanical oscillation modes in small signal stability problems. Owing to the structural characteristics of partitioned sub-matrix of state space equations, the partial differentiation terms of system state matrix for obtaining eigenvalue sensitivity indices can be calculated very simply. By the method presented in this paper, the AESOPS algorithm can be used in controller design problem as well as analysis of small signal stability problem.
