  • This paper describes a sensitivity-coefficient-based iterative method for detecting cracks in a structure. The sensitivity coefficients of a cracked structure are obtained by changing its eigenvectors. The proposed method is applied to a cracked cantilever. The crack is modeled as a rotational stiffness. The predicted cracks are in good agreement with those from a structural reanalysis of the cracked structure.

  • This study proposed the analysis of damage detection due to the change of the stiffness of structure by using the original and modified dynamic characteristics. The present approach allows the use of composite data which consist of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The suggested method is applied to examples of a cantilever and 3 degree of freedom system by modifying the stiffness. The predicted damage detections are in good agreement with these from the structural reanalysis using the modified stiffness.

  • This study proposed the method of the multi-crack detection using the sensitivity coefficient matrix which is calculated from the change of eigenvalues and eigenvectors before and after the crack. Each crack is modeled by a rotational springs. The method is applied to the cantilever beam with miulti-crack. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are determined for different crack locations and depths. The prediction of multi-crack detection are in good agreement with the results of structural reanalysis.

  • A damage in structure alters its dynamic characteristics. The change is characterized by changes in the modal parameter, i.e., modal frequencies, modal damping value and mode shape associated with each modal frequency. Changes also occur in some of the structural parameters; namely, the mass, damping, stiffness matrices of the structure. In this paper, evaluation of changes in stiffness matrix of a structure is presented as a method not only for identifying the presence of the damage but also locating the damage. It is shown that changed stiffness matrix can be accurately estimated a sensitivity coefficient matrix derived from modifying mode shapes, First, with 4 story shear structure models, the effect of presence of damage in a structure on its stiffness matrix is studied. By using these analytical model, the effectiveness of using change of stiffness matrix in detecting and locating damages is demonstrated. To validate the predicted changing stiffness and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.

  • Sensor placement is a crucial aspect of bridge health monitoring (BHM) dedicated to accurately estimate and locate structural damages. In addressing this goal, a sensor placement framework based on the deflection influence line (DIL) analysis is here proposed, for the optimal design of damage detection-oriented BHM system. In order to improve damage detection accuracy, we explore the change of global stiffness matrix, damage coefficient matrix and DIL vector caused by structural damage, and thus develop a novel sensor placement framework based on the Fisher information matrix. Our approach seeks to determine the contribution of each sensing node to damage detection, and adopts a distance correction coefficient to eliminate the information redundancy among sensors. The proposed damage detection-oriented optimal sensor placement (OSP) method is verified by two examples: (1) a numerically simulated three-span continuous beam, and (2) the Pinghu bridge which has existing real damage conditions. These two examples verify the performance of the distance corrected damage sensitivity of influence line (DSIL) method in significantly higher contribution to damage detection and lower information redundancy, and demonstrate the proposed OSP framework can be potentially employed in BHM practices.

  • This paper predicts the modified mass and stiffness of structure using the sensitivity coefficients with the iterative method. The sensitivity coefficients are obtained by the change of the eigenvectors according to structural modification. The method is applied to an examples of a 3 degree of freedom system by modifying mass and stiffness. The predicted mass and stiffness are in good agreement with these from the structural reanalysis using the modified mass and stiffness.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of Eigen Problem give systematic design improvement information for noise and vibration of a system. Based on reliable results form commercial FE code(UAI/NASTRAN), three computational procedures for design sensitivity analysis of eigen problem are suggested. Those methods are finite difference, design sensitivity analysis using external module and design sensitivity analysis running with NASTRAN. To verify the suggested methods, a numerical example is given and these results are compared with the results from UAI/NASTRAN eigen sensitivity option. We can conclude that design sensitivity coefficient of eigen proplems can be computed outside of the FE code as easy as inside of the FE code.

  • The optimal threshold estimation is considered in order to discriminate the mixture distribution in the fields of Biostatistics and credit evaluation. There exists well-known various accuracy measures that examine the discriminant power. Recently, Matthews correlation coefficient and the F1 statistic were studied to estimate optimal thresholds. In this study, we explore whether these accuracy measures are appropriate for the optimal threshold to discriminate the mixture distribution. It is found that some accuracy measures that depend on the sample size are not appropriate when two sample sizes are much different. Moreover, an alternative method for finding the optimal threshold is proposed using the correlation coefficient that defines the ratio of the confusion matrix, and the usefulness and utility of this method are also discusses.
