Cadmium telluride(CdTe) nanowires were successfully synthesized from individual nanoparticles via self-assembly and the evolutionary process was investigated. The oxidation of tellurium ions on CdTe nanoparticles resulted in the organization of individual nanoparticle into twisted-nanoribbons. The nanoparticles self-assembled to twisted ribbons under light while nanoparticles under dark transformed to straight nanowires made of several layers of individual nanoparticles. The images of nanoribbons were analysed based on transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The photoluminescence was blue-shifted from 555 to 545nm.

The control of Ga doping in ZnO nanowires (NWs) by physical vapor deposition has been implemented and characterized. Various Ga-doped ZnO NWs were grown using the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method, with Au catalyst on c-plane sapphire substrate by hot-walled pulsed laser deposition (HW-PLD), one of the physical vapor deposition methods. The structural, optical and electrical properties of Ga-doped ZnO NWs have been systematically analyzed, by changing Ga concentration in ZnO NWs. We observed stacking faults and different crystalline directions caused by increasing Ga concentration in ZnO NWs, using SEM and HR-TEM. A $D^0X$ peak in the PL spectra of Ga doped ZnO NWs that is sharper than that of pure ZnO NWs has been clearly observed, which indicated the substitution of Ga for Zn. The electrical properties of controlled Ga-doped ZnO NWs have been measured, and show that the conductance of ZnO NWs increased up to 3 wt% Ga doping. However, the conductance of 5 wt% Ga doped ZnO NWs decreased, because the mean free path was decreased, according to the increase of carrier concentration. This control of the structural, optical and electrical properties of ZnO NWs by doping, could provide the possibility of the fabrication of various nanowire based electronic devices, such as nano-FETs, nano-inverters, nano-logic circuits and customized nano-sensors.

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have attracted research interests due to the distinct physical properties that can lead to variousoptical and electrical applications. In this paper, we have grown InAs NWs viagold (Au)-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and catalyst-free vapor-solid (VS) mechanisms and investigated on the p-type doping profile of the NWs. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is used for the growth of the NWs. Trimethylindium (TMIn) and arsine (AsH3) were used for the precursor and diethyl zinc (DEZn) was used for the p-type doping source of the NWs. The effectiveness of p-type doping was confirmed by electrical measurement, showing an increase of the electron density with the DEZn flow. The structural properties of the InAs NWs were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, we characterize atomic distribution of InAs NWs using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis.
Double-layered ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized by aqueous solution method on (001) plane of ZnO nanorod. A stepwise changing of aqueous solution concentration gave rise to a new nano-structured layer consisting of either multiple of nanorods or nanowires with much smaller radii than that of the ZnO nanorod on which the new layer was grown. As the first step the ZnO nanorods have been grown to have the (001) preferential orientation in the aqueous solution consisting of 0.1M zinc nitrate and 0.1 M HMT. This preferentially aligned ZnO nanorods have been regrown in either a less diluted solution of 0.01M zinc nitrate and 0.01 M HMT or a more diluted solution of 0.005M zinc nitrate and 0.01 M HMT. A new nano-layer consisting of numerous aligned nanorods or nanowires has been produced on the (001) planes of ZnO nanorods. The growth mechanism for this double layered ZnO nanostructure is ascribed to the (001) polar surface energy instability and inhibition of (001) plane growth due to the step-wise change of aqueous solution concentration; ZnO nuclei formed on the (001) plane grow preferentially in (010) plane instead of (001) plane to reduce the total surface energy. Surface area of ZnO nanostructure can be increased in orders of magnitudes by forming a new layer consisting of smaller nanorods/nanowires on (001) plane of ZnO nanorods.
We fabricated the field effect transistor using single crystalline ZnO nanowires synthesized by a conventional thermal evaporation method and investigated their basic properties under the various conditions such as ultraviolet irradiation, reducing gas and electrolyte. The typical carrier concentration and mobility of the single crystalline ZnO nanowire with a diameter of 100 nm and length of 5 um were $1.30{\times}10^{18}cm^{-3}$ and $15.6cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively. The current of ZnO nanowire under ultraviolet irradiation significantly increased about 400 times higher as compared to in the darkness. In addition, the ZnO nanowire showed typical sensing characteristics for $H_2$ and CO due to well-known surface reactions and typical current-voltage characteristics under the 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte.

Theoretical calculations suggest that the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can be improved by introducing a core-shell heterostructure to a semiconductor nanowire because of the reduced thermal conductivity of the nanowire. To experimentally verify the decrease in thermal conductivity in core-shell nanowires, the thermal conductivity of Ge-SixGe1-x core-shell nanowires grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was measured using suspended microdevices. The silicon composition (Xsi) in the shells was measured to be about 0.65, and the remainder of the germanium in the shells was shown to play a role in decreasing defects originating from the lattice mismatch between the cores and shells. In addition to the standard four-point current- voltage (I-V) measurement, the measurement configuration based on the Wheatstone bridge was attempted to enhance the measurement sensitivity. The measured thermal conductivity values are in the range of 9-13 W/mK at room temperature and are lower by approximately 30 than that of a germanium nanowire with a comparable diameter.

One-dimensional nanosturctures such as nanowires and nanotube have been mainly proposed as important components of nano-electronic devices and are expected to play an integral part in design and construction of these devices. Silicon carbide(SiC) is one of a promising wide bandgap semiconductor that exhibits extraordinary properties, such as higher thermal conductivity, mechanical and chemical stability than silicon. Therefore, the synthesis of SiC-based nanowires(NWs) open a possibility for developing a potential application in nano-electronic devices which have to work under harsh environment. In this study, one-dimensional nanowires(NWs) of cubic phase silicon carbide($\beta$-SiC) were efficiently produced by thermal chemical vapor deposition(T-CVD) synthesis of mixtures containing Si powders and hydrocarbon in a alumina boat about $T\;=\;1400^{\circ}C$ SEM images are shown that the temperature below $1300^{\circ}C$ is not enough to synthesis the SiC NWs due to insufficient thermal energy for melting of Si Powder and decomposition of methane gas. However, the SiC NWs are produced over $1300^{\circ}C$ and the most efficient temperature for growth of SiC NWs is about $1400^{\circ}C$ with an average diameter range between 50 ~ 150 nm. Raman spectra revealed the crystal form of the synthesized SiC NWs is a cubic phase. Two distinct peaks at 795 and $970\;cm^{-1}$ over $1400^{\circ}C$ represent the TO and LO mode of the bulk $\beta$-SiC, respectively. In XRD spectra, this result was also verified with the strongest (111) peaks at $2{\theta}=35.7^{\circ}$, which is very close to (111) plane peak position of 3C-SiC over $1400 ^{\circ}C$ TEM images are represented to two typical $\beta$-SiC NWs structures. One is shown the defect-free $\beta$-SiC nanowire with a (111) interplane distance with 0.25 nm, and the other is the stacking-faulted $\beta$-SiC nanowire. Two SiC nanowires are covered with $SiO_2$ layer with a thickness of less 2 nm. Moreover, by changing the flow rate of methane gas, the 300 sccm is the optimal condition for synthesis of a large amount of $\beta$-SiC NWs.
Wurtzite nanomaterials, such as ZnO, GaN, and InN, have become a subject of great scientific and technological interest as they simultaneously have piezoelectric and semiconductor properties. In particular, the piezoelectric potential (piezopotential) created by dynamic straining in the nanowires drives a transient flow of current in the external load, converting mechanical energy into electricity. Further, the piezopotential can be used to control the carrier generation, transport, separation, and/or recombination at the metal-semiconductor junction or p-n junction, which is called the piezophototronic effect. This paper reviews the recent advances on the piezophototronic effect to better use the piezophototronic effect to control the carrier generation, transport, separation and/or recombination for improving the performance of optoelectronic devices, such as photon detectors, solar cells and LEDs. This paper also discusses several research and design studies that have improved the output performance of optoelectronic devices.
