  • In Semi-Solid Forging, it is necessary to control the forming variables accurately in order to make near-net-shape products. Generally, the defects of products may occur due to liquid segregation which can be caused by the degree of deformation and strain rate, and condition of friction in Semi-Solid Forging, where the segregation is to be predicted by flow analysis. This paper presents the feasibility of theoretical analysis model using the new yield function for compressible P/M materials which is proposed by Doraivelu et at. to the flow analysis of the semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloys instead of adopting the yield criterion of Shima and Oyane which is used by Charreyron and Flemings. The simple compression process is taken into consideration as the model to confirm the usefulness of the adopted yield function. The distribution of the liquid fraction at various strains and strain rates in radial direction, and the influence of friction are estimated by upper-bound method.

  • In this research, an approach combining a semi-analytical method and an analytical method is presented to investigate the static and dynamic post-buckling behavior of the sandwich functionally graded (FG) porous cylindrical shells exposed to external pressure. The sandwich cylindrical shell considered is composed of a viscoelastic core and two FG porous (FGP) face layers. The viscoelastic core is made of Kelvin-Voigt-type material. The material properties of the FG porous face layer are considered continuous through each face thickness according to a porosity coefficient and a volume fraction index. Two types of sandwich FG porous viscoelastic cylindrical shells named Type A and Type B are considered in the research. Type A shell has the porosity evenly distributed across the thickness direction, and Type B has the porosity unevenly distributes across the thickness direction. The FG face layers are considered in two cases: outside metal surface, inside ceramic surface (OMS-ICS), and inside metal surface, outside ceramic surface (IMS-OCS). According to Donnell shell theory, von-Karman equation, and Galerkin's method, a discretized nonlinear governing equation is derived for analyzing the behavior of the shells. The explicit expressions for static and dynamic critical buckling loading are thus developed. To study the dynamic buckling of the shells, the governing equation is examined via a numerical approach implementing the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. With a procedure presented by Budiansky-Roth, the critical load for dynamic post-buckling is obtained. The effects of various parameters, such as material and geometrical parameters, on the post-buckling behaviors are investigated.

  • It is well known that concrete is typical porous material. We pay attention to Hansen's idea that concrete may be expected to act as semi-permeable membrane, and report the effect of concentration of solution and temperature on water flux in forward osmosis. In order to measuring volume of water flux from distilled water to solution of sodium chloride through hardened cement paste, specially designed apparatus was constructed, and the following result were obtained: (1) hardened cement paste acts as semi-permeable membrane, consequently, water flux in forward osmosis may occur. (2) Rate of water flux is proportion to concentration of dilute solution, and this suggests hardened cement paste is agreeable to the theory of membrane. (3) Effect of temperature on water flux is agreeable to Arrehenius equation and is great.

  • In this paper thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of a porous functionally graded (FG) Timoshenko beam in thermal environment with various boundary conditions are performed by employing a semi analytical differential transform method (DTM) and presenting a Navier type solution method for the first time. The temperature-dependent material properties of FG beam are supposed to vary through thickness direction of the constituents according to the power-law distribution which is modified to approximate the material properties with the porosity phases. Also the porous material properties vary through the thickness of the beam with even and uneven distribution. Two types of thermal loadings, namely, uniform and linear temperature rises through thickness direction are considered. Derivation of equations is based on the Timoshenko beam theory in order to consider the effect of both shear deformation and rotary inertia. Hamilton's principle is applied to obtain the governing differential equation of motion and boundary conditions. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of several parameters such as porosity distributions, porosity volume fraction, thermal effect, boundary conditions and power-low exponent on the natural frequencies of the FG beams in detail. It is explicitly shown that the vibration behavior of porous FG beams is significantly influenced by these effects. Numerical results are presented to serve benchmarks for future analyses of FG beams with porosity phases.

  • Vanadium-doped SiC crystals have been grown by using a porous graphite inner crucible filled with vanadium carbide (VC) and by using a porous graphite plate and SiC + VC powders, respectively. Semi-insulating SiC crystals were grown onto the 6H-SiC seed crystals by PVT (Physical Vapor Transport) method. The grown crystals were indicated to be 6H-SiC polytype by XRD. As result of SIMS analysis, vanadium-rich precipitates were observed when the vanadium concentration was relatively higher than the maximum solubility of vanadium ($3-5{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$) in vanadium-doped SiC crystals, which resulted in degradation of crystal quality.

  • Water retaining pavement is a pavement to lower the surface temperature by using evaporation of the water that the pavement contains when the pavement is heated by the sun in the daytime. The objective of this study is to develop water retaining materials. In this study we evaluated the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material. We produced dense grade asphalt pavement, porous asphalt pavement, semi-rigid Pavement, semi-rigid pavement included a charcoal and semi-rigid pavement included a sepiolite, and then tested surface temperature characteristics. The test result says that water retaining pavements using a sepiolite and a charcoal lower surface temperature more than $10^{\circ}C$ compared to dense grade asphalt pavement. We confirm the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material according to the test results.

  • In this study, latent fingermarks deposited in porous or non-porous surface was developed by cyanoacrylate fuming, and then the developed fingermark is enhanced by using Rhodamine 6G. Between water-based R6G and organic solvent-based R6G, author studied about which material have higher effectiveness in enhancing fingermark. In all seven types of surfaces depositing fingermark, water-based R6G have higher effectiveness in enhancing fingermark and lower surface coloring than organic solvent-based R6G. But because the surfaces found in crime scene have multicolor background and various quality, the additional study about various surfaces is needed.

  • Porous alumina-based ceramics are of special interest due to their outstanding mechanical properties and their thermal and chemical stability. Nevertheless, the high electrical resistance of alumina-based ceramics, due to the generation of static electricity, leads to difficulty in applying a vacuum chuck in the semi-conductor process. Therefore, development of alumina-based ceramics for applications with vacuum chucks aims to have primary properties of low electrical resistance and high air permeability. In this study, we tailored the electrical resistance of porous alumina-based ceramics by adjusting the amount of $MnO_2$ (with $TiO_2$ fixed at an amount of 2 wt%) and by using coarse alumina powder for high air permeability. The characteristics of the specimens were studied using scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimeter, capillary flow porosimetry, universal testing machine, X-ray diffraction and high-resistance meter.

  • Soils consist of an assemblage of particles with different sizes and shapes which form a skeleton whose voids are filled with water and air. Hence, soil behaviour must be analyzed by incorporating the effects of the transient flow of the pore-fluid through the voids, and therefore requires a two-phase continuum formulation for saturated porous media. The present paper presents briefly the Biot's basic theory of dynamics of saturated porous media with u-P formulation to determine the responses of pore fluid and soil skeleton during cyclic loading. Kelvin elements are attached to transmitting boundary. The Pastor-Zienkiewicz-Chan model has been used to describe the inelastic behavior of soils under isotropic cyclic loadings. Newmark-Beta method is employed to discretize the time domain. The response of fluid-saturated porous media which are subjected to time dependent loads has been simulated numerically to predict the liquefaction potential of a semi-infinite saturated sandy layer using finite-infinite elements. A settlement of 17.1 cm is observed at top surface. It is also noticed that liquefaction occurs at shallow depth. The mathematical advantage of the coupled finite element analysis is that the excess pore pressure and displacement can be evaluated simultaneously without using any empirical relationship.

  • The structure and optical properties of n-type and p-type porous silicon (PS) prepared by the chemical etching in the light and the dark, respectively, are reported in this paper. Microstructural features of the samples are mainly investigated by SEM, AFM XRDGI techniques. Also, their optical properties are investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and Fourier transform infrared absorption measurements. In the n-type PS, the room temperature photoluminescence is observed in a visible range from 500 nm to 650 nm in contrast to that in the blue region (400∼650 nm) in p-type PS. Further, semi-transparent Cu films in thickness range of ∼40 nm are deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering on PS to investigate the I-V characteristics of the samples.
