  • Most of gas turbines is operated by the type of dry premixed combustion to reduce NOx emission and economize fuel consumption. However this type operation, combustion induced instability brought failure problems cause by high pressure and heat release fluctuations. Though there has been lots of studies since Lord Rayleigh to understand this instability mechanism and control the instabilities, none of them made matters clear. In order to understand the instability phenomena, a simple experimental study with dump combustor was conducted at the moderate pressure and ambient temperature conditions. From this model gas turbine combustor self-excited instabilities at the resonance mode(200Hz) and bulk mode(10Hz) were occurred and observed at the three points of view; pressure, heat release and equivalence ratio which are acquired by peizo-electric transducer, HICCD camera and acetone LIF respectively. From this results we could see the instability mechanism clear with the account of time scale analysis which explained by the propagation of pressure wave to the upward of mixture stream and convectional transfer of the equivalence ratio fluctuation by this pressure fluctuation.

  • To simulate the self excited torsional vibrations of rotating drill strings (DSs) in vertical bore-holes, the nonlinear wave models of homogeneous and sectional torsional pendulums are formulated. The stated problem is shown to be of singularly perturbed type because the coefficient appearing before the second derivative of the constitutive nonlinear differential equation is small. The diapasons ${\omega}_b\leq{\omega}\leq{\omega}_l$ of angular velocity ${\omega}$ of the DS rotation are found, where the torsional auto-oscillations (of limit cycles) of the DS bit are generated. The variation of the limit cycle states, i.e. birth (${\omega}={\omega}_b$), evolution (${\omega}_b<{\omega}<{\omega}_l$) and loss (${\omega}={\omega}_l$), with the increase in angular velocity ${\omega}$ is analyzed. It is observed that firstly, at birth state of bifurcation of the limit cycle, the auto-oscillation generated proceeds in the regime of fast and slow motions (multiscale motion) with very small amplitude and it has a relaxation mode with nearly discontinuous angular velocities of elastic twisting. The vibration amplitude increases as ${\omega}$ increases, and then it decreases as ${\omega}$ approaches ${\omega}_l$. Sectional drill strings are also considered, and the conditions of the solution at the point of the upper and lower section joints are deduced. Besides, the peculiarities of the auto-oscillations of the sectional DSs are discussed.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the affect of various turbulence properties on aerodynamic characteristics of twin box bridge section. To achieve this goal, active turbulence generator which successfully simulated various target turbulences was developed in the wind tunnel. From the wind tunnel tests, turbulence integral length scale did not affect on the aerodynamic forces and flutter derivatives except for the $A_1^*$ curve. Turbulence intensity gave slight effect on the unsteady aerodynamic force, but turbulence integral length scale did not affect the self-excited forces except vertical direction component.

  • The dynamic behavior of a cable-stayed bridge due to random wind forces is investigated. The effects of the steady wind, the self-excited and the buffeting forces are studied. The dynamic analysis of the structure is carried out by the frequency domain method utilizing the mode superposition. Example analysis are performed for Dolsan Bridge, which is under construction at Yeosu, Jeonnam. Aerodynamic stability of the bridge is investigated and the vertical motion of the girder as well as the tension variations of the cables is obtained.

  • In the case of frequent braking, when driving downhill or long distance, conventional brakes using friction are problematic in braking safety due to brake rupture and fading phenomenon. Therefore auxiliary brakes is essential for heavy vehicles. And several research has been actively conducted to improve energy efficiency by regenerating mechanical energy into electric energy when the vehicles brake. In this paper, a voltage control method is utilized to recover the electric energy generated in the electromagnetic retarder instead of the eddy current. To regenerate the braking energy into the electrical energy, a resonant L-C circuit is configured in the retarder. The retarder can be modeled as self-excited induction generator due to its operating principle. The driving conditions according to the retarder's parameters are made into 3-D maps. Also, the voltage of the resonant circuit changing depending on the driving pulse applied to the FET was analyzed. For the control of this voltage, we proposed an algorithm using the PI controller. The controlled voltage is converted by a 3-phase AC/DC converter and then charged to a battery inside the heavy vehicles through a DC/DC converter. Electromagnetic retarder and its controller are validated using Matlab Simulink. We also demonstrate the voltage controller through the actual M-G set experiment.

  • This paper deals with the self-excited mixer using tunnel diode oscillator operated as a microwave source and Doppler signal detector. The system impedance, the oscillation condition and the frequency conversion theory including moving target are investigated. The oscillating frequency and the output of tunnel diode oscillator are 2.035 GHz and 0.1 mW. The input signal frequency which is equivalent to Doppler signal is lower than tunnel diode oscillator frequency by 125 MHz. TDe conversion loss has been investigated as a functicn of input signal level. This loss is greater than 67 db for the large pump mode.

  • This paper proposes an analysis method based on the magnitude-phase dynamic theory for isolated power systems with static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs). The stability margin of an isolated power system is greatly reduced when a load is connected, due to the disadvantageous features of the self-excited induction generators (SEIGs). To analyze the control process for system stability and to grasp the dynamic characteristics in different timescales, the relationships between the active/reactive components and the phase/magnitude of the STATCOM output voltage are derived in the natural reference frame based on the magnitude/phase dynamic theory. Then STATCOM equivalent mechanical models in both the voltage time scale and the current time scale are built. The proportional coefficients and the integral coefficients of the control process are converted into damping coefficients, inertia coefficients and stiffness coefficients so that analyzing its controls, dynamic response characteristics as well as impacts on the system operations are easier. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • Brake noise is classified according to frequency territory: judder, groan and squeal. Squeal noise of disk brake is a noise and self excited vibration with frequency of $1{\sim}10Khz$ caused by the friction force between the disk and the pad of the automobile. Passengers in a vehicle feel uncomfortable. It causes unstable characteristic to the brake system when you try to stop the vehicle. Thus this study aims to find in which conditions the vehicles are stable during the braking hour and find ways to decrease a squeal noise and the vibration by measuring various factors including squeal noise and self excited vibration between the pad and disk brake system during the braking hour. From the result the countermeasure for a squeal noise and a vibration decrease is established. Also the analyzed data is found to be useful and can be applied to the actual brake model.
