Bridging the Gap between Grammar and Conversation in Korean College English Conversation Classes

  • College students frequently feel their grammar knowledge from primary and middle school is not useful when they are asked to speak in college conversation classes. Because of their frustration at their lack of communicational ability as well as inappropriate teaching methods and class textbooks that have little to do with the student's major course of study, the student often has a low motivation to study. It is not uncommon for students to seek English education outside of their college classrooms by going to language institutes or studying abroad. College teachers need to find a way to use the student's background in grammar from primary and secondary schools. Despite the student's sentiment about his/her grammar education, grammar is an essential key to successful English conversation. Some ways that teachers can close the gap between primary and secondary school grammar education and college conversation classes are: to use a theme-based methodology, cue cards, and modeling. Activities such as Grammar Clinic, Grammar Police, and Show and Tell can be effective ways to bridge this gap. Teachers can use these activities and methods to correct such student errors as: incorrect word order, missing or unnecessary be verbs, confusion between be and do verbs, subject-verb agreement. and incorrect tense.

Strategy and Effect on Interdisciplinary Project-based Learning based Blended Learning (블랜디드 학습에 기반한 통합교과 프로젝트 학습 전략 및 효과)

  • Although the e-learning system is being introduced in elementary and secondary education, incorporating it into the regular curriculum is difficult. Other problems include the lack of sessions and connection to regular courses in realistically applying project-based learning in the regular school curriculum. Therefore. this study established, applied, and analyzed the blended learning strategy to resolve such issues. Specifically, a theoretical investigation on the concept of blended learning and IT-oriented, project-based learning was conducted. The theme for learning based on integrated courses was also selected, and the 5-stage project-based teaching and learning strategy, concretized. The concretization strategy involved discussion, role division, and alternative evaluation strategy. The class progressed in formats of on-class online, on-class offline and off-class online. As a result, students experienced inconvenience since the project only lasted for a short period of time. Nonetheless, they responded positively to the effect of project-based learning in general. This study was able to suggest the possibility of applying e learning in regular school curriculum and propose the direction for digital and learner oriented teaching.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze qualitatively implementation in schools through perception on creativity and character education of teachers who participated in winter training and workshop which the Southeast Regional Center for Creativity and Character Education arranged. The results are as follows. Firstly, teachers responded that they used most often a variety of students' experiential and participant activities associated with the subject in practising creativity and character education. Secondary, they showed a wide variety of responses from 'not to able to measure' to 'to practice in every class' for how often to apply to and practise creativity and character education in class. Thirdly, for the question of 'How do you think environment for creativity and character education in your school', while parts of them responded 'sufficient educational environment', some of them did 'poor or not completely supported environment'. Lastly, most of them utilized teaching materials for creativity and character education periodically or in reconstructing according to instructional form in their class.

An Ecological Approach to Physical Education Students' Drop-out and Opt-out at Graduate School of Education about Teacher Appointment Examination of Secondary School (교육대학원 체육교육전공 학생들이 경험하는 임용시험 중도포기 및 탈락에 대한 생태학적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore factors that physical education graduate students in graduate school of education drop out of teacher appointment examination of secondary school by using Ecological Model. The in-depth interview was conducted for 10 physical education graduate students studying in school of education. As an aspect of the intrapersonal component, the effort to apply how participants'current job positively affects their preparation for teacher appointment examination is required and they need to clearly decide academic priorities to prepare for teacher appointment examination. As an aspect of interpersonal component, participants are negatively affected by subjective norm, thereby providing personalized mentoring program is required. As an aspect of organizational component, limited tuition support and inappropriate place to study are emphasized, so practical helps like sports practice instructor or teacher appointment examination preparation class is required. Finally, this study suggests the introduction of integrated system for teacher appointment examination.

A Study on the Improvement of SW Gifted Education through Analysis on the Current Situation of the SW Gifted Class (SW영재학급 현황 분석을 통한 SW영재교육의 개선 방안 탐색)

  • As the importance of SW education increases, the necessity of SW gifted education is being required that early discovery of talented children in SW fields. In 2016, thirty SW gifted classes were set up for elementary and secondary school students and SW gifted education began. However, SW gifted education could not be carried out with consistency in detail because each class had different conditions such as selection methods of gifted students, curriculum and environment. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the situation of SW gifted classes in order to decrease the gap of the SW gifted class. In this research, all the SW gifted classes were investigated in the view of the curriculum, environment, student selection and contents through reviewing the installation-performance reports and on-site visits of all classes. Also, limitations and problems of the SW gifted classes were described and improvement methods were discussed.

The Conceptualizing and Practices of Mathematical Classes Based on Students' Thinking (학생 사고기반 수학 수업의 특징과 그 실제)

  • In this study, the student participation-centered class, which takes students' mathematical thinking as an important issues of the class, is named as student thinking-based math class. The main characteristics of student thinking-based mathematics classes were examined in terms of tasks, students engagement, and the role of teachers. According to the results of analysis of class cases practiced by five secondary mathematics teachers, student thinking-based mathematics classes were conducted in the intersection of the rich mathematics tasks, students' cognitive and social engagement, and the role of teachers' formative facilitator. The results of this study showed that the student's thinking is more important than the activity itself. And it is meaningful in that it examines the influence of the dynamic interaction of the three components of the mathematics class on the direction and outcome of the class.

A study of the search for a good secondary science classes: a case study of the alternative school students ('좋은 중등 과학 수업'에 대한 탐색: 대안학교 학생의 사례를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary students' perception of a good secondary science classes. Subjects were 18 secondary students who enrolled in alternative school located in Korea. The instruments of this study was a questionnaire which consisted of 18 items on 4 domains. Also data were collected from in-deep interviews and students' drawing. The results of the study were summarized as follows; First, students explained that good schools have the characteristics of the interesting and respectful atmosphere. Also there are good relationships between teachers and students. Second, they emphasized that good teachers are humanistic teachers. Third, good science classes are based on the constructivism in terms of the education methods. The results suggest that it may be necessary to remodel the merits of the alternative schools to solve the problem of public school. It is important to develop expertise of the science teachers in alternative school through teacher education programs based on the constructivism. Also it is necessary to provide appropriate learning space and various media for effective science teaching and learning in alternative school.

Studies on the Degree of Likings for Each Units of School Mathematics (학교수학의 각 영영에 대한 선호도 연구)

  • School mathematics are composed of five major units of numbers& algebraic expressions, equations & inequalities, functions, figures, and statistics & probabilities. But if we look into the general activities of mathematics teachers in their class, they rather do not take into account students\` cognitive and affective traits or degree of difficulty which each of the unit has. For successful teaching of mathematics, teachers should take into consideration many affective items which influence the students\` scholastic achievement. Among them student\`s liking for the mathematics is commonly accepted as the most important factor for successful learning. In this study, with the five units of school mathematics, we investigated the students\` degree of likings for each unit. To fined out whether there are any differences in students\` likings for the mathematics, between regions and kind of schools, we classified the population according to the locations and kinds of schools. To do this, we divided the whole region into four parts such as Seoul, large city, medium city and town. Moreover, we partitioned the whole secondary school students into four groups of middle school students, vocational high school students, pro-science students of academic high schools, and pro-liberal arts students of academic high schools. From each partition, we sampled similar size of experimental groups which came up to total 1260 students. Analysing the answer sheets which the students responded about the questionnaire, we investigated the following questions using the ANOVA test. 1. Is there any differences in the trend of likings for each unit between the regional classifications? 2. Is there any differences in the trend of likings for each unit between the classifications of secondary schools? 3. What trends of changes are there in the degree of likings for each unit according to the rising of students\` grade?

Teachers' Negative Attitudes and Limited Health Literacy Levels as Risks for Low Awareness of Epilepsy in Turkey

  • Objectives: For students with epilepsy, schools are a critical environment for managing the disease properly. This study examined awareness of epilepsy, attitudes toward epilepsy, and health literacy among school teachers in Turkey. Methods: This study was conducted in a city in Turkey with 1408 public school teachers from June 2021 to September 2021. Results: The median scores of the scales were 5, 29, and 32 for epilepsy awareness, epilepsy attitudes, and health literacy, respectively. Epilepsy awareness was higher in women, and epilepsy attitudes were more positive in women than men (p<0.05). While epilepsy awareness was higher in primary school teachers, epilepsy attitudes were more positive in secondary school teachers (p<0.05). Epilepsy awareness was lower in secondary school teachers (odds ratio [OR], 1.27; p<0.05), those who did not have an individual with epilepsy in their family/social environment (OR, 1.57; p<0.001), those who did not have a student with epilepsy in their class (OR, 1.45; p<0.05), and in those who had not witnessed an epilepsy seizure (OR,1.19; p<0.05). Compared to those with positive attitudes regarding epilepsy, epilepsy awareness was 1.36 times lower in those with negative attitudes (p<0.001). Epilepsy awareness was 1.92 times lower in those with limited health literacy than those with adequate health literacy (p<0.001). Conclusions: In this study, low epilepsy awareness, negative epilepsy attitudes, and limited health literacy were common among teachers. The findings from this study suggest that panels, workshops, and health training on epilepsy should be organized for school teachers and included at regular intervals in certified first-aid practices.

  • The status of facilities, management for the experiment, practices, teaching methods in middle schools have been investigated. The present status and reasonable management of the middle school science education have been grasped from the questionaires. To do this 125 secondary science teachers, 1,745 students and 70 principals of schools in Korea are administered questionaires of Science Education Reserch Institute of Kyungpook National University(1996). The results of this study are as follows : The reasonable management for experiments and practices of science education were scanty in the middle school around the urban and rural school owing to the shortage of facilities and equipments, crowded class, excessive class works for teacher, excessive contents of present textbooks and insufficiency of the administrative supports etc. The current teaching method of middle school science has emphasized knowledge. This fact does not satisfy the objective of learning due to lack of the teaching method. Desirable directions for the improvement of present status of middle school science education were proposed in this paper
