  • This paper considers eigenstructure assignment in high-order linear systems via proportional plus derivative feedback. It is shown that the problem is closely related with a type of so-called high-order Sylvester matrix equations. Through establishing two general parametric solutions to this type of matrix equations, two complete parametric methods for the proposed eigenstructure assignment problem are presented. Both methods give simple complete parametric expressions for the feedback gains and the closed-loop eigenvector matrices. The first one mainly depends on a series of singular value decompositions, and is thus numerically very simple and reliable; the second one utilizes the right factorization of the system, and allows the closed-loop eigenvalues to be set undetermined and sought via certain optimization procedures. An example shows the effect of the proposed approaches.

  • This paper proposes a second-order implicit constraint enforcement method which yields enhanced controllability compared to a first-order implicit constraints enforcement method. Although the proposed method requires solving a linear system twice, it yields superior accuracy from the constraints error perspective and guarantees the precise and natural movement of objects, in contrast to the first-order method. Thus, the proposed method is the most suitable for exact prediction simulations. This paper describes the numerical formulation of second-order implicit constraints enforcement. To prove its superiority, the proposed method is compared with the firstorder method using a simple two-link simulation. In this paper, there is a reasonable discussion about the comparison of constraints error and the analysis of dynamic behavior using kinetic energy and potential energy.

  • Genetic networks are a key to unraveling dynamic properties of biological processes and regulation of genes plays an essential role in dynamic behavior of the genetic networks. A popular characterization of regulation of the gene is a kinetic model. However, many kinetic parameters in the genetic regulation have not been available. To overcome this difficulty, in this report, state-space approach to modeling gene regulation is presented. Second-order systems are used to characterize gene regulation. Interpretation of coefficients in the second order systems as resistance, capacitance and inductance is studied. The mathematical methods for transient response analysis of gene regulation to external perturbation are investigated. Criterion for classifying gene into three categories: underdamped, overdamped and critical damped is discussed. The proposed models are applied to yeast cell cycle gene expression data.

  • Using Minimax principle and Linking theorem in critical point theory, we prove the existence of two nontrivial solutions for the following second order superlinear difference systems $$(P)\{{\Delta}^2x(k-1)+g(k,y(k))=0,\;k{\in}[1,\;T],\;{\Delta}^2y(k-1)+f(k,\;x(k)=0,\;k{\in}[1,\;T],\;x(0)=y(0)=0,\;x(T+1)=y(T+1)=0$$ where T is a positive integer, [1, T] is the discrete interval {1, 2,..., T}, ${\Delat}x(k)=x(k+1)-x(k)$ is the forward difference operator and ${\Delta}^2x(k)={\Delta}({\Delta}x(k))$.

  • Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is the mixed organic wastewater generated from palm oil industry. In this study, kinetic analysis with treating POME in an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) was performed. Therefore, the AHR was monitored for its performances with respect to the changes of COD concentrations and hydraulic retention time (HRT). Batch tests were performed to find out the substrate removal kinetics by granular sludge from POME. Modified Stover Kincannon, First-order, Monod, Grau second-order kinetic models were used to analyze the performance of reactor. The results from the batch test indicate that the substrate removal kinetics of granular sludge is corresponds to follow Monod's theory. However, Grau second-order model were the most appropriate models for the continuous test in the AHR. The second order kinetic constant, saturation value constant, maximum substrate removal rate, and first-order kinetic constant were 2.60/day, 41.905 g/L-day, 39.683 g/L-day, and 1.25/day respectively. And the most appropriate model was Grau second-order kinetic model comparing the model prediction values and measured COD concentrations of effluent, whereas modified Stover-Kincannon model showed the lowest correlation.

  • This paper presents second derivative generalized extended backward differentiation formulas (SDGEBDFs) based on the second derivative linear multi-step formulas of Cash [1]. This class of second derivative linear multistep formulas is implemented as boundary value methods on stiff problems. The order, error constant and the linear stability properties of the new methods are discussed.

  • A simplified method for the computation of first second and higher order derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors derivatives associated with repeated eigenvalues is presented. Adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compose an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m is the number of multiplicity of the repeated eigenvalues. The algebraic equation developed can be used to compute derivatives of both eigenvalues and eigenvectors simultaneously. Since the coefficient matrix in the proposed algebraic equation is non-singular, symmetric and based on N-space it is numerically stable and very efficient compared to previous methods. This method can be consistently applied to structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the finite element model of the cantilever beam is considered.

  • We characterize multipath fading channel dynamics at the packet level and analyze the corresponding data queueing performance in various environments. We identify the similarity between wire-line queueing analysis and wireless network per-formance analysis. The second order channel statistics, i.e. channel power spectrum, is fecund to play an important role in the modeling of multipath fading channels. However, it is identified that the first order statistics, i.e. channel CDF also has significant impact on queueing performance. We use a special Markov chain, so-called CMPP, throughout this paper.

  • In this paper, we propose a switching control method for a class of 2nd order nonlinear systems with single input. The main idea is to switch the control law before the trajectory of the solution arrives at singular hyperplanes which are defined by the denominator of the control law. The proposed method can handle a class of nonlinear systems which is difficult to be stabilized by the existing methods such as feedback linearization, backstepping, control Lyapunov function, and sliding mode control.
