Nailed joints, which are commonly used in Wooden structures, transmit loads from one member to another and induce partial composite actions between members. Long-term loads induce creep slip in nailed joints and affect load sharing and partial composite action, which may reduce joint stiffness. Two theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models were developed for nailed joints to predict creep behavior under long-term variable loads. Those models were also used to predict stiffness changes under long-term variable loads. The stiffness of nailed joint is defined as a Secant modulus which is called the joint modulus or slip modulus. Input data for the models are the results of constant load tests under three different load levels. To verify the models, nailed joints were also tested under two long-term variable load functions. The predictions of the models were very close to the experimental data. Therefore, the theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models and procedures developed in this study can be applied to predict creep slip and the changes in joint moduli of nailed joints under long-term variable loads.
The combination of spatial latticed structures (hereafter SLS) and flexible cables, the cable-stayed spatial latticed structures (hereafter CSLS) can cross longer span. According to variation principle, a novel geometric nonlinear formulation for 3-D bar elements considering large displacement and infinitesimal rotation increments with second-order precision is developed. The cable nonlinearity is investigated and it is taken that the secant modulus method can be considered as an exact method for a cable member. The tower column with which the cables link is regarded as a special kind of beam element, and, a new simplified stiffness formulation is presented. The computational strategies for the nonlinear dynamic response of structures are given, and the ultimate load carrying capacities and seismic responses are analyzed numerically. It is noted that, compared with corresponding spatial latticed shells, the cable-stayed spatial latticed shells have more strength and more stiffness, and that the verical seismic responses of both CSLS and CLS are remarkably greater than the horizontal ones. In addition, the computation shows that the stiffness of tower column influences the performance of CSLS to a certain extent and the improvement of structural strength and stiffness of CSLS is relevant not only to cables but also to tower columns.
A new inelastic design method performing iterative calculations using secant stiffness was developed. Since the proposed design method uses linear analysis, it is convenient and stable in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the inelastic strength and ductility demands of the members by performing iterative calculation. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were highlighted by comparisons with existing design methods using elastic or plastic analysis. Unlike the existing inelastic design methods performing the preliminary design on the structure and checking its validity using nonlinear analysis, the proposed integrated analysis-design method can directly calculate the strength and ductility demands of each member. In addition, the proposed design method can address the inelastic design strategy intended by the engineer, such as strength and ductility limits of members and the design concept of strong-column and weak-beam. As a result, economical and safe design can be achieved.

This paper deals with numerical efficiency of nonlinear solution technique for space trusses. It will propose the combined Arc-length method to trace structural behavior after reaching buckling load as opposed to the current Arch-length method. The combined Arc-length method uses the current stiffness parameter as a control variable. It uses Secant-Newton method in stable path and applies Arc-length method in unstable path. To evaluate efficiency of solution technique, the accuracy of solution, convergence, and computing time concerning illustrative numerical examples are compared with the current Arc-length method. It show that the combined Arc-length method, as proposed in this paper, is superior to the current Arc-length method in numerical nonlinear analysis.

Now that problems with force-based seismic design have been clearly identified, design is inclined toward displacement-based methods. One such widely used method is Direct-Displacement-Based Design (DDBD). Yet, one of the shortcomings of DDBD is considering higher-mode amplification of story shear, moments, and displacements using equations obtained from limited parametric studies of regular planar frames. In this paper, a different approach to account for higher-mode effects is proposed. This approach determines the lateral secant stiffness of the building frames that fulfill the allowable inter-story drift without exceeding the desired story displacements. Using the stiffness, an elastic response spectrum analysis is carried out to determine elastic higher-mode force effects. These force effects are then combined with DDBD-obtained first-mode force effects using the appropriate modal superposition method so that design can be performed. The proposed design procedure is verified using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) of twelve planar frames in four categories accounting for mass and stiffness irregularity along the height. In general, the NTHA response outputs compared well with the allowable limits of the performance objective. Thus, it fulfills the aim of minimizing the use of NTHA for planar frame buildings, thereby saving computational resources and effort.

In the present research work, the effectiveness and the efficiency of a retrofitting approach using a layer of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) jacket for damaged substandard exterior beam-column joints (BCJs) is experimentally investigated. The main objective of this study is to rehabilitate the already damaged BCJs to meet the serviceability requirements without compromising safety. According to the proposed strengthening technique, a chipped surface, lightly brushed with a dry condition was selected for making a successful bond between normal concrete substrate surface (NCSS) and UHPFRC. Then a fresh UHPFRC jacket with a thickness of 30 mm was cast around the damaged specimens. The entire test matrix was comprised of three 1/3 scale damaged exterior BCJs with a different column axial load (CAL). These specimens were repaired with UHPFRC and retested under monotonic loading. Based on the experimental results, repaired specimens showed an excellent performance in terms of their load-displacement response, maximum strength, displacement ductility, initial stiffness, secant stiffness and energy dissipation capacity when compared with the corresponding values registered when these specimens were tested in their virgin state. This rehabilitative intervention not only restored the strength, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of severely damaged specimens but also improved their performance.

Methods of nonlinear structural design sensitivity analysis are developed in parallel with the nonlinear finite element structural analysis methods and numerically evaluated. Direct decomposition and iterative solution methods for the secant stiffness approach and direct use of tangent stiffness in the design sensitivity analysis phase are derived and presented as the methods of nonlinear structural analysis and design sensitivity analysis are closely related. From the considerations of theoretical and numerical behavior, the tangent stiffness approach is shown to be efficient as the intermediate results of structural analysis can be effectively used in the design sensitivity analysis stage.
This paper presents a simplified model to capture the nonlinear behavior of steel frames depending on the spread of plasticity method. New interaction formulae were derived to evaluate the plastic strength for I-shaped steel sections under uniaxial bending moment and axial compression load. Also, new empirical formulae were derived to evaluate the tangent stiffness modulus of steel I-shaped cross-sections considering the effect of the residual stresses suggested by the specifications in European Convention for Construction Steelworks (ECCS). The secant stiffness which depends on the tangent modulus is used to evaluate the internal forces. Based on stiffness matrix method, a finite element analysis program was developed for the nonlinear analysis of space steel frames using the derived formulae. Comparison between the proposed model results with those given by the fiber model shows very good agreement. Numerical examples were introduced to verify, check the accuracy, and evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model. The analysis results show that the new proposed model is accurate and able to minimize the solution time.

Corrosion of the headed studs shear connectors is an important factor in the reduction of the durability and mechanical properties of the steel-concrete composite structure. In order to study the effect of stud corrosion on the mechanical properties in the negative moment region of steel-concrete composite beams, the corrosion of stud was carried out by accelerating corrosion method with constant current. Static monotonic loading was adopted to evaluate the cracking load, interface slip, mid-span deflection, and ultimate bearing capacity of four composite beams with varying corrosion rates of headed studs. The effect of stud corrosion on the stiffness of the composite beam's hogging moment zone during normal service stage was thoroughly examined. The results indicate that the cracking load decreased by 50% as the corrosion rate of headed studs increase to 10%. Meanwhile, due to the increase of interface slip and mid-span deflection, the bending stiffness dropped significantly with the same load. In comparison to uncorroded specimens, the secant stiffness of specimens with 0.5 times ultimate load was reduced by 25.9%. However, corrosion of shear studs had no obvious effect on ultimate bending capacity. Based on the experimental results and the theory of steel-concrete interface slip, a method was developed to calculate the bending stiffness in the negative bending moment region of composite beams during normal service stage while taking corrosion of headed studs into account. The validity of the calculation method was demonstrated by data analysis.

Wind-induced vibration is one of the important structural design factors for serviceability of tall buildings. In order to evaluate the reliable wind-loads and wind induced-vibration, it is necessary to obtain the exact natural period of buildings. The discrepancy in the natural period estimation often results in the overestimation of wind loads. In this study, the effectiveness of lateral stiffness estimation method for tall buildings with flat plate system is evaluated. For this purposed, the results of finite element analysis of three recently constructed buildings are compared with those obtained from field measurement. For the analysis, factors affecting on the lateral resistance such as cracked stiffness of vertical members, elastic modulus of concrete, effective slab width, and cracked stiffness of link beam are considered. Form the results, it is found that the use of non-cracked stiffness and application of dynamic modulus of elasticity rather than initial secant modulus yields closer analysis result to the as-built period.
