  • This study investigated the influences of science anxiety ill elementary school teachers on tile children's science achievement and attitudes. For this study, 166 elementary school teachers taken charge of 4th, 5th, 6th grade of elementary school children, were chosen as a sample. First, we tested science anxiety test to these teachers, and then chose 50 teachers that are 25 teacher of highest score and 25 teachers of lowest score. Next, we chose 1848 students that 50 teachers take charge. The results are as follows. 1. The children learned from lowest scored teacher got the higher point than the children learned from highest scored teacher in science achievement test. 2. Children's science attitude have a little differences in 4 sub-boundary area but totally lower science anxiety group have higher score than higher science anxiety group. 3. Another variables such as grade, living district, teachers' training experience give influence to the children's attitude to science. In this result, we found that teachers' science anxiety influenced in some part upon the elementary student science achievement and attitude.

  • The preservice elementary teachers' achievement goal orientations(mastery/ability-approach/ability-avoidance/work-avoidance goal) for science teaching were measured. The student teachers(91 males and 127 females) tended to have the mastery or ability-approach goals rather than the ability-avoidance or work-avoidance goals for science teaching. The male students were more learning focused than were the females, while the female students reported stronger work-avoidance goal orientation than did the males. This study also examined how the preservice teachers' achievement goal orientations were related to their science teaching efficacy beliefs(personal science teaching efficacy belief/science teaching outcome expectancy). As expected, the results showed that there were significantly positive relationships between the mastery or ability-approach goals and science teaching efficacy beliefs, while the significantly negative relationships were found between the ability-avoidance or work-avoidance goal and personal science teaching efficacy belief. The educational implications and future directions were discussed.

  • In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of science academic achievement by multiple culture and North Korean migrant students types, percentage of correct answer and discrimination per items per groups, and contents domains using quantitative and qualitative method in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA). As a results of analysis, the degree of science academic achievement of the students from multiple culture and North Korean is much lower than that of the general students. Also, the science academic achievement of the students from multiple culture and North Korean migrant is different from the general students. Especially, science academic achievement of the immigrated students and the North Korean migrant students was lowest. The analysis of items that the difference of the percentage of correct answer was large showed that the students from multiple culture and North Korean migrant were equally weak to it in all contents domains, but that the students from international marriage family born in country were weak in some areas. Therefore, the appropriate the teaching and learning method and the educational support is needed considering the group situation, so the educational implications are discussed.

  • This study aimed to analyze achievement characteristics of Korean students in the results of PISA 2018 science domain. To this end, the characteristics of PISA 2009 to PISA 2018 science were analyzed in terms of the percentage of each performance level and the ratio of male and female by achievement level; in addition, the percentage of correct answers by framework subscale was compared with PISA 2015. The results showed that Korea has a higher percentage of students at the lower level of achievement as compared to the high-ranking countries of PISA, and the ratio of students at the higher level of achievement was lower. On average, the difference in achievement between boys and girls was negligible; however, but at the higher achievement level, the ratio of boys continued to be higher than that of girls. In addition, in the PISA science framework, the percentage of correct answers of the questions corresponding to 'personal' of 'contexts', 'evaluate and design scientific enquiry' of 'competencies', 'epistemic' of 'knowledge', and 'high' of 'cognitive demand' increased; similarly, and achievement improved as compared to PISA 2015. Based on these results of the study, we propose a method for improving teaching and evaluation to foster Korean students' scientific competence.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of utilization of creative techniques in elementary science class on science learning motivation and science academic achievement. To verify this study, the subjects of this study were sixth-grade students selected from four classes of an elementary school located in U Metropolitan city. First, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in their science learning motivation compared to the comparative group. Second, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in their science academic achievement compared to the comparative group.

  • This study examines how family and school social capital moderate the relation between family income and academic achievement. I use the data from the Korean Educational and Employment Panel(KEEP) on the third year middle school students in 2004. Results show that higher levels of family and school social capital, as well as financial capital such as family income are more positively associated with academic achievement. In addition, family and school social capital are served as moderators of the influences of family income on academic achievement. For example, higher parental concern about children and teacher-student bonding provides an extra boost to the positive relationship between family income and student achievement. Furthermore, lower educational expectations can make the relation between income and achievement negative. These findings underscore the importance of social capital at home and at school as the alternatives to promote academic achievement. In particular, greater concern and support encouraging social capital at home and school should be directed at low-income students who are struggling with academic achievement.

  • The effect of Web-based project learning on the science achievement and attitude of middle school students was investigated. Four classes of 9th grade at a coed middle school were divided into control and experimental groups. Web-based project instruction in which students utilized the Web to interactively carry out their projects was put into practice with the experimental group, while traditional instruction was employed with the control group. Pre- and post-test achievement and attitude scores were estimated through an analysis of covariance. Web-based project instruction was seen to be more effective in enhancing students’ science achievement and attitude than traditional instruction. In particular, the former instruction was most useful for improving higher level students’ achievement and attitude among the higher, middle, and lower level students of both groups, based on their academic achievement. The effect of Web-based project may result in eradicating negative cognition about gender difference.

  • In the study, epistemological beliefs, metacognition, and scientific inquiry skills all directly affected the science academic achievement levels of high school students. Also, epistemological beliefs indirectly affected science academic achievement mediated by scientific inquiry skills and metacognition, while metacognition had an indirect effect on science academic achievement level mediated by scientific inquiry skills. We found that scientific inquiry skills had the biggest direct effect, while epistemological beliefs showed the most robust indirect effect on academic achievement level. Thus, we argue that students' scientific inquiry skills should be nurtured for the advancement of their academic achievement. In addition, more careful scholarly attention must be given to both epistemological beliefs and metacognition, which directly and indirectly affected academic achievement level. We believe that epistemological beliefs, metacognition, and scientific inquiry skills should all be considered in an integrative manner when developing educational programs and strategies.
