  • This study aims to analyze the science content in secondary school environmental education(EE) textbooks and the environment-related content in secondary school science text- books. Firstly, a total of 73 EE and science textbooks for secondary students were reviewed, which three kinds of textbooks, secondary school EE textbooks and the 10th grade "Science" textbooks, were finally selected for analysis. Three researchers separately analyzed the textbooks using NAAEE framework(1996) for the development of EE materials. In condition that there was a disagreement in their opinion, they had discussed until they came to an agreement. The results showed that secondary school EE textbooks contained more and deeper science concepts than the 10th grade "Science" textbooks, which were evaluated better in all perspectives of the analysis framework. The 10th grade "Science" textbooks had more various teaching and learning activities than EE textbooks. It it expected that the new EE textbook developers should consider the ultimate goal of EE which focused the affective perspectives rather than the cognitive perspectives.

  • This paper examines high school English textbooks to ascertain if they appropriately reflect the kinds and frequencies of routine formulas and downgraders of request act used by English native speakers. It is important to present authentic routine formulas in textbooks for students to acquire proper, efficient and safe communication strategies to communicate with other English speakers. For the analysis, currently available 7 series of 21 high school English textbooks under the $7^{th}$ National Curriculum were selected. Each series of textbooks contains 3 school grade textbooks as High School English, High School English I, and High School English II. The results show that the high school English textbooks generally demonstrate a secund reflection of the English native speakers' use of request strategies and downgraders. That is, the textbooks were found to have presented mostly casual forms of routine formulas while they have not presented sufficient coverage of elaborated polite routine formulas for requesting which English native speakers frequently use. The presence of some kinds of the frequently used downgraders was also very small in proportion in the textbooks. More effort should be given to complement the deficiency in this area by teachers and researchers.

  • This study investigated the food and dietary educational content in primary, middle and high school textbooks in order to provide fundamental data for the development of educational programs on Korean traditional food culture. The research objects consisted of 51 kinds of textbooks (15 kinds of primary school textbooks, 29 kinds of middle school home economics textbooks and 7 kinds of high school home economics textbooks), and the contents related to food and dietary education were counted and analyzed. The content analysis was performed using two categories: application method and subject matter. Application method included texts, cases, visual aids (pictures, photos, illustrations, chart, etc.) and activities, whereas subject matter consisted of seven types (well balanced nutrition and health, understanding of food and nutrition, cooking principles, cooking lessons, traditional foods and culture, others). The results of the application method in primary school textbooks show that visual aids were the most common in all six grades. For the subject matter, 'understanding of food and nutrition' was most abundant in primary school textbooks while 'well balanced nutrition and health' accounted for a large part of the contents in middle school textbooks. However, the contents regarding traditional foods and culture were insufficient in primary and middle school textbooks. These results suggest that educational contents on traditional foods and culture should be added to primary and middle school textbooks and covered in various subjects. Furthermore, high school 'home economics' contents need to emphasize comprehensive food and dietary education and adjust to 'science & technology for life'.

  • This study investigated the perception of pre - service teachers in order to find out how paper textbooks are used in high school classes and what improvement is needed. Firstly, the results of analyzing the perception about the utilization of textbooks are as follows. First, in the case of Korean language, social studies, mathematics, science, and English, textbooks were used most frequently, and most of the respondents did not use textbooks for arts and physical education subjects. Secondly, Korean language, social studies, mathematics, science, and English textbooks are most frequently used as teaching materials. Third, in the case of Korean, social, mathematics, science, and English subjects, in addition to textbooks, problem collections were used most frequently and arts and physical education subjects showed the most use of prints. Next, the results of analyzing the perception of the improvement method of the textbooks are as follows. First, in the high school class, the response rate was high in that Korean, social, mathematics, science, and English classes needed a textbook. Most of the respondents answered that they were not necessary for the textbooks of arts and physical education subjects. Second, in order to improve the textbooks, the most demanding textbooks focused on the core basic contents, followed by self - directed learning activities, competency centered contents selection, cooperative learning activities, and teacher self - development. The demand for digital textbooks was low.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the contents related to environmental education(EE) in the elementary school textbooks for the following areas: well-balanced EE, and development of EE curriculum/teachers' guide in elementary school level. For the purpose of this analysis, elementary school teachers, education administrators and EE specialists were involved. Eleven content areas of EE, namely: natural environment, artificial environment, population, industrialization, natural resources, pollution, environmental conservation, environment sanitation, environment ethics, environmentally sound and sustainable development(ESSD), and daily li(e as a consumer, were analyzed. The results of the analysis are as follows: 1. There are total 1,140 contents related to EE in the elementary school textbooks of 7th Korea National Curriculum. 2. The textbooks of grade 6 contain the most number of EE contents, while the least number is in the textbooks of grade 3. 3. The subject that includes EE contents equally in its textbooks is social studies, and the subjects that relate a lot to EE are Korean language, science, and social studies respectively. 4. The content areas that are included a lot in textbooks are' natural environment', 'pollution', and' environmental conservation' respectively, while the contents of 'population','industrialization', 'ESSD' are included to a lesser degree. The content area most frequently mentioned in the textbooks is 'pollution', and the number of the contents are increasing along with the grade level. 5. Generally, the content areas of 'population', 'industrialization', and 'natural resources' are reflected in the textbooks to a lesser degree than others. 'Industrialization' is not included in the textbooks of grade 2, while 'population' is not included in ones of grade 4. According to the result, more concern about balanced EE in content areas is needed at the elementary school level. Similar studies tot K and secondary school levels are needed. The developmental study of EE guide book and teacher training for teaching EE using the book are also recommended.

  • Objectives: Elementary school national textbooks of 2013 were analyzed to examine the contents related to Korean medicine in the Korean elementary school curriculum. Methods: The contents related to Korean medicine were identified in the 118 elementary school national textbooks of 2013, and their proportion in the total textbooks was calculated. The Korean medicine-related contents were also analyzed. Results: There were twelve parts related to Korean medicine in seven chapters in six courses, and four directly related words and eight indirectly related words were found in twelve parts. The total number of lines for the contents related to Korean medicine were 205, which occupied 0.063% in the total elementary school national textbooks. The contents occupied 0.013% in the second grade, 0.265% in the third grade, 0.036% in the fourth grade, and 0.042% in the fifth grade. Conclusion: The results show that the coverage of Korean medicine in the elementary school national textbooks in 2013 does not provide enough information on Korean medicine. To help people get to know about Korean medicine and use it in the right way, it would be necessary to include more information about Korean medicine in textbooks, and continuous interest as well as research will be needed.

  • Angle has a variety of aspects, such as figure, measurement, and rotation, but is mainly introduced from a figure perspective and a quantitative perspective of the angle is also partially experienced in the elementary mathematics textbooks. The purpose of this study was to examine how the angle concept introduction and development pattern in elementary school mathematics textbooks are linked or changed in middle school mathematics textbooks, and based on this, was to get the direction of writing math textbooks and implications for guidance. To this end, 57 math textbooks for the first grade of middle school were collected from the first to the 2015 revised curriculum. As a result of the study, it was found that middle school textbooks had a greater dynamic aspect of each than elementary school textbooks, and the proportion of quantitative attributes of angle was higher in addition to qualitative and relational attributes. In other words, the concept of angle in middle school textbooks is presented in a more multifaceted and complex form than in elementary school textbooks. Finally, matters that require consensus within elementary, secondary, and secondary schools were also proposed, such as the use of visual expression or symbol, such as the use of arrows and dots, and the use of mathematical terms such as vertex of angle and side of angle.

  • The study aimed to investigate what high-school students recognize mathematics textbooks and how they use textbooks in their learning mathematics in and out-of mathematics classrooms. For this purpose, we developed a set of interview questions in order to unpack what high-school students thought about mathematics textbooks and how they intended to use the textbooks for their learning mathematics. Eleven high-school students participated in the interview; the interview lasted for about an hour for each student. The data from the interviews were analyzed. The findings from the data analysis suggested as follows: a) the students seemed to consider mathematics textbooks as crucial medium for a mathematics classroom material and thus, they were likely to obliged to use the textbooks for preparing for not only tests and examination conducted regularly in schools but college entrance examination conducted nationwide; b) however, the students appeared to use the textbooks in limited ways in which they looked into the textbooks to prepare for mid-term or final exam only, not for their understanding mathematical contents as a main resource; and c) the students seemed to realize that they rarely have had an opportunity to develop mathematical thinking capabilities and understand mathematical ideas conceptually through the mathematics textbooks.

  • This study examined how the distributive principles(DP) works in our elementary school textbooks and work books to figure out the implications for developing the elementary mathematics curriculum and textbooks. For this purpose, Chinese and Japanese elementary textbooks were reviewed and five criteria for the analysis of Korean textbooks and workbooks were prepared by the review. The analysis showed that Korean textbooks and work books are inefficient to handle DP in many ways. Based on these findings, this study suggested that the DP should be codified into the curriculum and explicitly dealt with in elementary math textbooks.
