  • This study was tried to find out characteristics of students' movement in classroom and homeroom. The object was the school whose homebase management was different by grade. Observation research was tried about middle school class that is simultaneously worked with different type of homeroom and the movement of students under various situations was analyzed. As a result, students in exclusive subject classroom moved in short time within one or two minutes after class. In case of exclusive homeroom, returning frequency of students was nearly about 85 to 100 percent within ten minutes in end of end. Behavioral characteristics of students in dual purpose homeroom was similar in exclusive subject classroom. The class using dual purpose homeroom showed high ratio in use of center homebase, therefore, returning frequency at short recess time was extremely low. In case of dual purpose homeroom at lunch time, next class students moved in early time and maximized within one or two minutes in end of end. These results are thought to be useful for planning spaces of variation type.

  • The purpose of this study is to carry out the research of the satisfaction level of consumers (students and teachers) and managerial characteristics for model classes of the subject classroom system and to draw the effective plan of the system. The conclusions are as follows First, the biggest advantage of the system is to fulfill the educational goal according to an individual level and ability of each student while the biggest disadvantage is the inconvenience of students to change their classrooms for each specific class. Second, it is necessary to rearrange the classrooms according to the applied subjects from the aspect of curriculum management since the time frame is not convenient for recess. English and mathematics are required preferentially as applied subjects, however Korean (as a national language) and science are needed to be taught with level-differentiated classes, too. The ideal size of classes is most likely 20-25 students according to the result of research. Lastly, the space of environment is another requirement to secure smooth flow of students' movements and extra space for technical devices used for information research. The above analysis indicates the necessity of supplementation in space planning for further implementation of subject classroom system in secondary school.

  • It has already been four years as of 2013 since the Departmentalized Classroom System was first introduced following the Korean government's policy. However, no investigation had been made yet on whether the system is properly being managed in practice according to the presented standards, guidelines, and policy direction. Hence, an in-depth investigation and analysis were called for. In line with this, documents were researched, deliberation meetings of experts were held, and the system pilot was tested to develop indices to investigate the state of block-scheduled classes and classes for each student's academic level for the educational classes field. For the school management field, we developed indices to investigate the teachers' organization and their division of labor, administrative officers and work reduction, improvement of teachers' expertise, and the guidance of the students' school life. Based on the indices, we investigated the state of 24 schools, which manage an advanced school system, nationwide. The results showed that the Departmentalized Classroom System has now reached the settling stage, which is beyond the introductory stage, and that it needs to be systematically supplemented for it to be settled in a stable manner.

  • The common life with modern urban residence, spending more than 80~90% of daily life in indoor environment, makes the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) even higher. Many efforts have made to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), which requires those systematic approaches for field practice. A recent study reported that no general approach cannot be made for IAQ improvement due to the great deal of variety in different indoor environments. Those indoor spaces included in Korean IAQ regulation were classified based on their characteristics and the IAQ guideline was suggested for each group of indoor spaces. Apart from those indoor spaces, the classroom in elementary school has different characteristics. By introducing the systematic approaches, the elementary classroom was surveyed and analyzed to understand its characteristics in due IAQ consideration. Based on the characteristics, there are several IAQ control measures suggested, including ventilation operation, dust mat installation, and white board. $CO_2$ and airborne dust were monitored and analyzed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of each control measure to IAQ. It was found that the general level of $CO_2$ concentration was managed under the IAQ guideline by applying the ventilator operation. The ventilation was also effective to the fugitive airborne particulate in elementary classroom environment.

  • This study examined the influences of middle school students' affective empathy and guilt-proneness on defending behavior against bullying and investigated if class climate (teacher support and student support) had moderating effects. The participants consisted of 163 second to third grade students (77 boys and 86 girls) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression. Moderating effects were examined using multiple regression analysis. The results of this study indicated that guilt-proneness, teacher support, and student support had significant effects on the defending behavior of middle school students. The higher the level of guilt-proneness, the higher the level of defending behavior. Defending behavior was also higher when students perceived a belongingness to a classroom where their teacher and students provided support. However, affective empathy had no effect on defending behavior. Second, teacher support moderated the relation between guilt-proneness and defending behavior. The effects of guilt-proneness on defending behavior against bullying were greater when teacher support was high compared to low. The results suggested that guilt-proneness and classroom climate play important roles in increasing defending behavior in middle school students. Some implications for future research were also discussed.

  • National competitiveness is related directly to the strength of educational competitiveness of universities. Seoul National University (SNU) has been taking efforts to improve its competitiveness in University education in variety of ways and the classroom assessment is one key example of those. The current classroom assessment system practiced at universities is being used to evaluate courses and professors in charge by the university administration or evaluation committee. The classroom assessment system is not intended to put students and professors as the subject of the evaluation. In this case, the evaluation is intended wrongfully to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement by assigning grades on the lectures. Instead, a proper classroom assessment system should be targeted to improve the quality of lectures by encouraging communication among professor and students in the classroom. In this study, it was intended to investigate a suitable classroom assessment system to enhance the effectiveness of education, not to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement. For this purpose, research has been carried out to investigate opinions of professors at SNU on the criteria of classroom assessment and to analyze the criteria of classroom assessment at other domestic universities in Korea. The inquiries for feedback on the lecture by the student in the class was analyzed. The current classroom assessment system at SNU was reviewed and an improvement plan was devised to evaluate liberal art courses of engineering and science schools at SNU. In this research, the problems in the classroom assessment system was reviewed and improvement points were searched to utilize the classroom assessment system more effectively for the improvement of lecture quality.

  • This study investigated middle school students' perceptions of an optimum class size as well as the relationships between a class size and various aspects of students' lives at school. Data were gathered from 858 students from 8 classes (grade 1 and 2) at 4 middle schools located in Busan by administering survey questionnaires. The average class sizes to which each participating students belonged were 17.88, 30.0, 31.88, 28.0 respectively. A series of comparative analyses were carried out, revealing that the majority of the participating students perceived 25-30 as an optimum size for one class. Also, students in a relatively smaller class tended to show higher levels of satisfaction with school lives and with school and classroom facilities, more positive attitudes towards classroom atmosphere, and greater needs for peer interaction than did their counterparts. Furthermore, it was found out that the actual class size had to do with the students' perceptions of the relationships between school facilities and their levels of stress and pleasure at school. These findings were discussed in order to provide educators, architects, and policy makers with practical implications for bringing about a better school environment that is conducive to learning and living for middle school students.

  • Through this study, we aimed to capture the nature of a mathematics method course, called "the Curriculum Development and Teaching Methods in Mathematics Education" which is a pedagogy course for teaching for secondary school mathematics taught at a university located in a south eastern part of South Korea. The research participants include three junior students who took the methods course and a local high school math teacher with two professors. The research has three parts. First, we designed a method course to prepare the junior or senior students for a teaching practicum. The individual students gave a mini lecture about a secondary mathematical topic as a course requirement. Second, the three students watched a classroom video-clip of the high school teacher and analyzed his instruction before the actual classroom visits. Furthermore, by "Let's Learn" program for students, the course was associated with a local community through the students and so that they could visit the teacher's classroom three times to observe his math classroom teaching. The students discussed the difference between their own mini lectures and the actual math classroom teaching to develop an understanding of what it entails to teach an actual math class. Third, the first author supervised the students' activities in the program including their report for it to bring out their findings to the class of the method course. We found out this method course provided the students with the experience of various aspects of actual math lesson as well as learning theories about the pedagogy for teaching for secondary school mathematics. We conclude that this course gives a model for the method course in mathematics education for secondary school mathematics.
