  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of high school students' mental health on their academic achievement and school dropout rate by using longitudinal data. Methods: For this study, 153 high schools were randomly sampled on a nationwide scale. The descriptive data was collected from a school information internet site which is organized by the Korean Ministry of Education. We used the schools' mean scores on the Adolescent Mental Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire-II (AMPQ-II) scale which was used for estimating students' mental health in the 2013 school-based mental health screening test. The data analysis was conducted by using hierarchical regression analysis. Results: The results of this study showed that the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores have significant effects on the following year's academic achievement and annual dropout rates. Especially, the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores tend to increase the school dropout rate in vocational schools. Conclusion: The finding of this study is that Korean high school students' mental health states significantly influence their academic achievement and school dropout rate.

Methods: Data were collected through structured questionnaires, and the study subjects were 93 students who agreed to participate in the study. The collected data were analyzed, using SPSS 25.0, by descriptive analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and pearson correlation analysis. Results: In this study, there was a significant positive correlation between depression and anxiety (r=.616, p<.001) and negative correlations between depression and grit (r=-.379, p<.001) and between depression and academic achievement (r=-.230, p=.026). Grit showed a significant positive correlation with academic achievement (r=.407, p<.001). Conclusion: According to these results, it is necessary to develop programs that can reduce depression and anxiety and increase grit in order to improve the academic achievement of nursing students.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of the hours spent on book-reading on the relationship between academic achievement and the Key Competency of Acting Autonomously. This study utilized data from the 'Korean Assessment of the Key Competencies of Youth in 2009', which was conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The participants were 2,781 elementary school students, 2,770 middle school students and 3,599 high school students who were selected from 12 areas of Korea. The data was analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and also through linear regression analysis. The results indicated that 1) academic achievement and the hours spent in book-reading was positively correlated to the competency of acting autonomously, 2) the effect of academic achievement on the competency of acting autonomously was partially mediated by the hours spent in book-reading, 3) and the mediating effect was the most influential when it came to elementary students, followed next by middle school and then finally high school students.

  • Mathematics is among the most important subjects in the middle school curriculum, yet the most hated subjects by students. The present study investigated the role of perceived executive functioning on the middle school student's mathematics achievement, after controlling for other psychological factors. Results showed that the students levels of executive functioning was predictive of their mathematics achievement test scores, even after motivational and attitude variables were controlled. The impact of the executive functioning was especially noticeable for the low achievers. On the other hand, for those whose scores were high, biological variables were the only significant predictors of their scores. The results of the present study imply that the intervention programs for improving mathematics achievement of middle school students should consider the different effect of cognitive and psychological factors on their achievements.

  • This study was to examine the effectiveness of neurofeedback training by observing the pre and post brainwave measurement results of about 50 (experimental group 25. comparative group 25) subjects who have shown attention and school achievement motivation. The study took place at neuro-training center B, in between the months of Jun. 2010 and Dec. 2010. The objective of this study was to prove its scientific effect through experimentation. As the brainwaves are adjusted by time series linear analysis. The result confirmed the differences of both attention quotient, brain quotient and school achievement. The result of the study suggest neurofeedback technique's possibility in positively affecting the subjects' attention and school achievement motivation.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate teachers' perception of Korean's achievement standard-based testing system (ASTS) and its process of implementation, and to propose a method of evaluating students' academic aptitude based on university entrance examinations. The core of the 2015 Revised National Curriculum is asserted by changes in classroom instruction, specifically encouraging students' participation in class based on a new method to evaluate student achievement. A total of 124 teachers in charge of student career counseling in middle and high schools in the Jeonbuk province participated in the study. The schools implementing the new method of ASTS were using 61.6% for unit school cut-off point, as opposed to the existing fixed cut-off point of 38.4%. The teachers understanding of the achievement evaluation method was rated 3.54 on the 5-point Likert scale, implying that they had a relatively good understanding of the method. Some of the challenges associated with reflecting the scores from the new student ASTS include difficulty of comparing scores across schools; grade inflation; advantages and disadvantages associated with the type of high school; and the increased importance of university entrance examination. In the ASTS, the fairness during the evaluation of the high school grades and the consequently the reliability of the evaluation prove worrying. As an ultimate result, selecting students based on university admissions data became untrustworthy. There should be further discussions on how students' achievement obtained from the new ASTS should be applied during the university admission process and how students' academic aptitude can be assessed in order to set a direction for secondary school education.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of middle school students' stress in relation to certain variables, those of grade, gender, academic achievement, coping behavior and self-concept. The subjects were 574 students selected from 4 middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments included a stress index, coping behavior questionnaire and self-concept inventory. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA (Scheff test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school students' stress was influenced significantly by the grade, gender and achievement in school. Also, coping behavior and self-concept were influenced significantly by the grade, gender, and achievement in school. Correlation analysis indicated that student's stress and certain coping behavior were postively correlated, especially avoidance coping behavior indicated a higher correlation to students' stress than active coping behavior. The relationship between stress and self-concept indicated a negative high correlation. It was also found that avoidance coping behavior, family self-concept, general self-concept, school and class self-concept, grade and academic achievement were significant predictors of middle school students' stress.
