  • Although increasing number of children are being raised by grandparents these days, little research exists on the development of the children in this arrangement. This study aimed at examining school adjustment of the children raised by grandparents, by comparing academic achievement and general classroom and school behaviors of the children in grandparent families with those of their peers from other types of families such as two-parents, single parent, kinship and institution care, and single parent with grandparent(s). Three hundred and twenty four 2nd graders md two hundred ninety eight 5th graders were surveyed for this study. It was found that children raised solely by grandparents did quite well, relative to children in traditional families where two parents were present. Children from single-parent families were significantly worse in school achievement and study habits than children in traditional nuclear families. Girls obtained higher scores on school achievement and study habits whereas they showed lower scores on problem behaviors than boys. There was also an interaction effect between family structure and gender of child in school achievement.

  • This study examined compensatory patterns of support among three types of children's peer relationships: school friendships, nonschool friendships, and sibling relationships. Specifically, this study investigated (1) the degree to which children with unsupportive school friendships turn to nonschool friends and siblings to compensate for the provisions they lack from school friends, and (2) the potential protective effects of substitute support on such children's adjustment. Subjects for this study were drawn from a sample of 297 sixth graders attending 3 public schools in Seoul. 6 teachers and 594 of parents of subjects also participated in the study. Subjects completed their questionnaires in their own classroom. The teachers and parents completed their forms within 1 week. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test. The results of this study were as follows: (a) When compared with the average, aggressive children and isolated children perceived their school friendship as low support. (b) Isolated, aggressive, and average children differed in their perceptions of support from nonschool friends and their favorite siblings. (c) The children who have unsupportive school friendships experienced greater socioemotional difficulties than did children with supportive school friendships. (d) The extent that sibling and nonschool friends provided the support lacking in their school friendships, isolated and aggressive children experienced diminished emotional distress.

Excepting data of 19 students poor in contents, 311 students' data were analyzed. Results: The results of analysis are like followings. 1. As for relation between the socio-demographic variable and accident experience, it showed statistical significance in sex and how to go to school. And there was no statistical significance in parents' job, educational level of parents, residential type, school record and allowance. 2. As for relation between safety education experience and accident experience, safety education doing school than family lowered accident incidence outstandingly. When safety education frequency increased one time, possibility to experience accident decreased to 30%. 3. As for relation between 4 personality types of MBTI and accident experience, Thinking(T) experienced accident more than Feeling(F). Moreover, it showed difference in accident type and injuried degree. This results were statistically significant. As the result of analyzing the injuried degree by sex only in Thinking(T) and Feeling(F), female students had statistically significant difference. • This study investigated the nutrient contents, nutrient density. and food group intake patterns of elementary school lunch programs in Kesngju. Four hundred students from four elementary schools participated in this study. Menus served in 60 schools on a weekly basis during each season were analyzed. Parents regarded hygiene as the most important factor in their children's diet. but they showed little concern for the necessity of nutrition education in the school curriculum. Parents considered that the most significant benefit of their children eating school lunches was to reduce unbalanced diets. On the other hand. children considered to be able to be on intimate terms with their friends as the greatest benefit of the school lunch program. The contents and nutrient densities of the meals provided were higher than those calculated from the Korean RDA. However, the content and nutrient density of iron were lower than those calculated from the RDA for 10 to 12 year old girls. The content of sodium was very high. Therefore the nutritionists should consider the Iron and cut down the amount of sodium. The 91.7% of 1,200 meals served contained more than four food groups and the school lunch program provided a sufficient variety of foods. In conclusion. the quality of nutrition in meals served by school lunch programs was considered satisfactory overall.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of empirically analyzing the effects of adolescents' relationships with major adults as protective factors for smartphone addiction. Specifically, the study compared the discriminatory effects of adolescents' relationships with their parents, school teachers, and educational institute teachers on smartphone addiction among elementary, middle, and high school students in Korea. Analyzing the data of the 2019 Korean Children & Youth Happiness Index (N=7,454), it was found that relationships with adults were significant factors in explaining the level of smartphone addiction even after controlling for the influences of adolescents' demographics, usage time, and friendship factors. For elementary school students, good relationships with their mothers and school teachers decreased the risk of smartphone addiction. On the other hand, in the case of middle school students, only a good relationship with father functioned as a protective factor. Good relationships with their fathers and institute teachers decreased the level of high school students' smartphone addiction. Based on these findings, this study discussed on the development of programs and policies for prevention and intervention of adolescents' smartphone addiction and provided suggestions for follow-up research in the future.
