  • To preserve scenic-view of Gwanak Mountain from the urban development, the viewshed component ratio and the scenic-view preference are investigated and analyzed by selecting view points at Nangokro. After 16 candidate view points are selected from the site, sight component ratio is measured through visual structure analysis and preference are measured by using the Likert scale. In addition, factor analysis, and regression analysis were conducted to examine the relationship between influencing factors and preference. As a result of the regression analysis of the 9 factors to influence the scenic-view preference, two factors such as degree of natural landscape and degree of arrangement around the site are chosen to influence the scenic-view preference. Through the preference factor analysis, two preference factors are selected as follows; 1) The factor of the landscape formation - Existence and nonexistence of the scenic-view conservation, degree of the landscape opening, and degree of natural landscape, degree of the landscape originality, and degree of the landscape sequence, degree of the landscape intimacy 2) The factor surrounding the landscape - Degree of arrangement around the site, degree of the landscape complexity, and atmosphere around the site.

Questionnaire developed by the Repertory Grid technique proved that 11 adjectives can be used to describe scenic features of a green wall and 4 preference elements. The result of the Scenic evaluation, the Felt type scored high in 'Aesthetic' and 'Maintenance' meaning that it is the most suitable method when constructing a green wall to improve urban scenery. Regression analysis was conducted to understand the link between the preference elements and scenic impression of a green wall. The result is that the higher the preference is on the design of a green wall, the higher the score is for 'Aesthetic'. Also, the higher the preference is on Bio-Diversity, Design, Growth, the higher the score is for 'Natural'. The above findings can be important measures and reference for selection of the right construction method when planning a green wall.

  • Past research suggests that a landscape has a specific situational meaning that is comprized of physical, social, and functional dimensions. and that the meaning: influences person/landscape interactions. In this study. the effect of landscape meaning on three landscape assessment(scenic beauty assessment, picnic preference, living preference) was tested by manipulating landscape meaning in three ways: Korean-positive, Korean-neutral, American-positive The results showed that landscape ,meaning played an important role in determining cognitive interactions and affective experiences of landscapes. However, it should be notch that the beneficial effect of positive meaning on landscape experiences depended on people's tasks and levels of oflandscape beauty. The effect was larger for both picnic preference (than scenic beauty and living preference) and low-beauty landscape (than the high-beauty) . The results also showed that the beneficial effect of positive meaning depended on the relationship between talc nature of positive meaning and measurement context.

  • The main purpose of this study is to obtain information on the factors influencing forest scenic beauty in order to make and manage scenic forest of recreation areas. 62 slides were taken for the study. Each photograph was independently judged by college students in 10 different major fields, with a total 264 observers after reliability test in the study. The ratings were scaled using a computer program developed by Brown & Daniel(1990). The results of rating scale analysis indicate that respondents' major field difference affects visual preference for forest scenic beauty. Similarly, with different sexual, forest visit frequency, and community type in childhood, people tend to rate their preference differently. The respondents' rating scale of relative scenic beauty of near-view forest scenes can largely be explained in terms of forest physical characteristics of forest landscape. Bare ground area and stash area are represented negative esthetic effects, while DBH, number of trees per hectare, sky area showed positive esthetic effects. These 6 variables in the model can be accounted for 74% of total variance in perceived forest scenic beauty. With this study result, it can be concluded that forest physical characteristics are significantly related to visual preference for near-view forest scenes.

  • This study was carried out to assess the characteristics of gabion on road cut-slopes, and analyze the scenic view preference for the gabion in Korea. 97 gabion sites from road cut-slopes were selected and were classified into 10 application types of gabion. The classification types of gabion were mostly related to the erosion and collapse prevention across road cut-slope. Gabion work sites in this study were classified into 30 sites (31%) for below 10% gradient, followed by 31 sites (32%) for 11~30% gradient, 20 sites (21%) for 31~50% gradient, and 16 sites (16%) for 51~80% gradient. Gabion works were constructed mostly in low gradient than in high gradient. 34 gabion sites (35%) among 97 sites were not covered by vegetation and 52 gabion sites (54%) showed vegetation cover rates of 1~30%. On the scenic preference analysis, public groups understood that the scenic view of gabion in cutting slope can be improved by vegetation cover, whereas expert groups prefer to scenic view of gabion only. However, expert groups encouraged subsequently vegetation covering to improve scenic view during gabion works in cutting slope.

  • The main purpose of this study is to obtain forest scenic beauty management informations toward forest working systems in pinus densiflora forest stands, etc. To get these information, visual preference and spatial image analysis methods are used. 25 different alternatives were simulated to visualize on basis of actual forest working methods with taken photos from May to July, 2003. The options were illustrated as photos produced by computer software. Respondents' ratings for 25 landscape scenes were obtained by interview survey method. Each alternatives were evaluated by forest major student group with total 103 respondents after reliability test. Visual preference evaluation was used 10 point rating scale. Spatial images of 12 alternatives were measured by 12 semantic differential scale. In general, the respondents preferred refreshing and ordering forest stand after forest working to natural forest stand before forest working. High visual preference for forest density produces 400-600 trees/ha in small diameter class forest stands. Regarding visual preference according to pavement type of trail, soil trail is ranked high. Visual preference for cutting area ranks mature forest stand and visual preference for trail slope cover type ranks shrub with grass as relatively high on the preference scale. Through the factor analysis, spatial images of 12 coniferous forest stands are classified as 'ordered opened' and 'beautiful healthy'. Results indicate how to conduct forest working systems for forest scenic beauty management.

  • This paper proposes a management method for a coastal black pine forest landscape considering the parallax effect. For the study, 10 coastal black pine forests in Gangneung were investigated about the average width of the coastal forests, the average diameters, and the intervals of the pines. Categorizations were realized for the 3 types of scene(sea, field, mountain, residential area, commercial area), diameter(16cm, 22cm, 28cm) and interval(5m, 7m, 10m) to produce a total of 45 scenic simulations. An investigation was made on the scenic preferences using 45 simulation images with S.D, and Likert Scales. The results were as follows: According the comparison of scenic preferences, natural landscapes(sea, field, and mountain) ranked high among preferences, with fabricated landscapes(residential area, commercial area) ranked low. The highest scenic preferences were shown with the seascape and an interval of 7m between the trees. On the contrary, the interrelationship was very low between the visual quantity of the scenic's elements(green, sky, building, road etc.) and the scenic preferences. As the results of the factor analysis, the 3 sense factors of "Depth(78.0%)" "Diversity(l5.6%)" and "Spatiality(6.4%)" explained coastal scenic preferences. "Spatiality" showed significant differences at intervals of 5~7m, and 10m between trees. This shows coastal forest management based on the interval of 10m standard affecting scenic preference.
