  • Among various decoding algorithms of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the min-sum (MS) algorithm and its modified algorithms are widely adopted because of their computational simplicity compared to the sum-product (SP) algorithm with slight loss of decoding performance. In the MS algorithm, the magnitude of the output message from a check node (CN) processing unit is decided by either the smallest or the next smallest input message which are denoted as min1 and min2, respectively. It has been shown that multiplying a scaling factor to the output of CN message will improve the decoding performance. Further, Zhong et al. have shown that multiplying different scaling factors (called a 2-dimensional scaling) to min1 and min2 much increases the performance of the LDPC decoder. In this paper, the simplified 2-dimensional scaled (S2DS) MS algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, we figure out a pair of the most efficient scaling factors which multiplications can be replaced with combinations of addition and shift operations. Furthermore, one scaling operation is approximated by the difference between min1 and min2. The simulation results show that S2DS achieves the error correcting performance which is close to or outperforms the SP algorithm regardless of coding rates, and its computational complexity is the lowest comparing to modified versions of MS algorithms.

  • Although scaling is the primary method for improving oral health, it is also associated with dental fear. The objective of this study was to empirically verify whether the use of gel anesthetic within the gingival sulcus during scaling relieves pain and improves other factors. A total of 128 patients scheduled to undergo scaling at a dental clinic of a general hospital located in the Gyeonggi Province, between July 2014 and July 2015, were enrolled in the study. The participants underwent scaling following the application of 20% benzocaine gel or placebo gel anesthetic within the gingival sulcus, and the data was collected using a questionnaire. There was a significant difference in the severity of pain, participant satisfaction, perceived sensitivity, overall discomfort, and fear of scaling between the two groups. The two groups were compared in terms of perceived need for gel anesthesia, willingness to pay for anesthesia costs, and willingness to receive scaling in the future. There were significant differences in all the three parameters depending on whether gel anesthesia was used or not. There were significant differences between the two groups in perceived sensitivity immediately after scaling and one day after scaling, with no difference seen one week after scaling. With regards to overall discomfort over time, there were significant differences between the two groups immediately after scaling. Based on these findings, we expect that application of gel anesthetic within the gingival sulcus during scaling will reduce pain, perceived sensitivity, overall discomfort, and fear of scaling with increased satisfaction.

  • This study has presented the analysis of subthreshold swings based on scaling theory for double gate MOSFET. To solve the analytical potential distribution of Poisson's equation, we use Gaussian function to charge distribution. The scaling theory has been used to analyze short channel effect such as subthreshold swing degradation. These scaling factors for gate length, oxide thickness and channel thickness has been modified with the general scaling theory to include effects of double gates. We know subthreshold swing degradation is rapidly reduced when scaling factor of gate length is half of general scaling factor, and parameters such as projected range and standard projected deviation have greatly influenced on subthreshold swings.

  • Hanwoo cattle are a unique and historical breed in Korea that have been genetically improved and maintained by the national evaluation and selection system. The aim of this study was to provide information that can help improve the accuracy of the estimated breeding values in Hanwoo cattle by showing the difference between the imputation reference chip platforms of genomic data and the scaling factor of the genetic relationship matrix (GRM). In this study, nine sets of data were compared that consisted of 3 reference platforms each with 3 different scaling factors (-0.5, 0 and 0.5). The evaluation was performed using MTG2.0 with nine different GRMs for the same number of genotyped animals, pedigree, and phenotype data. A five multi-trait model was used for the evaluation in this study which is the same model used in the national evaluation system. Our results show that the Hanwoo custom v1 platform is the best option for all traits, providing a mean accuracy improvement by 0.1 - 0.3%. In the case of the scaling factor, regardless of the imputation chip platform, a setting of -1 resulted in a better accuracy increased by 0.5 to 1.6% compared to the other scaling factors. In conclusion, this study revealed that Hanwoo custom v1 used as the imputation reference chip platform and a scaling factor of -0.5 can improve the accuracy of the estimated breeding value in the Hanwoo population. This information could help to improve the current evaluation system.

  • This paper deals with a self-tuning fuzzy controller. The fuzzy controller is constructed with linguistic rules which consist of the fuzzy sets. Each fuzzy set is characterized by a membership function. The tuning fuzzy controller has paramenters that are input/output scaling factors to effect control output. In this paper we propose a tuning method for the scaling factor Computer simulations carried out on first-order and second-order processes will show how the present tuning approach improves the transient and the steady-state characteristics of the overall system. The applicability of the proposed algorithm is certified by computer simulation results.

  • Background: Multicultural families are constantly on the rise as marriage migrants and foreign workers increase. Multicultural families appear to record poor health levels compared to native families. As health is a social issue, children of surviving generations of multicultural families are also a growing interest. This study was conducted to confirm the effect of multicultural families and parents' educational level on the scaling experience of children. Methods: For this study, the 2016~2018 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data were used. In order to make the two groups of adolescents belonging to multicultural and native families similar, a total of 5,362 people were included in the survey, consisting of 2,681 individuals each from multicultural and native families using the propensity score matching method. Logistic analysis was performed to identify factors influencing the scaling experience of adolescent children. Results: The results confirm that, even after controlling for factors such as parents' educational level, household income, and children's oral health behavior, parents' nationality appeared to have a statistically significant effect on their children's scaling experience. In addition, it was confirmed that the experience of oral health education had a significant effect. Conclusion: Cultural heterogeneity and the lack of adequate language ability of immigrants affects health behavior and medical accessibility. Therefore, children from multicultural families are more likely to be exposed to unhealthy environments compared to the children of native Korean families. Based on an understanding of the socioeconomic multicultural background of individuals, education and public policy should be prepared to improve the awareness for the need for preventive oral health and provide unhindered accessibility to dental services.

  • A new scaling method for the prediction of gas turbine components characteristics using experimental data of gas turbine test unit has been proposed. In order to minimize the analyzed performance error in the this study, firstly component maps were constructed by real experimental performance data at some operating conditions and a polynomial obtained from scaling factors at given conditions, and then the simulated performance using the identified maps was compared with the performance result using the currently used traditional scaling method. In comparison, the performance analysis result by the currently used traditional scaling method was met well agreed with the real engine performance at most off-design points except for the design point. However the performance analysis result using the newly proposed scaling method had good agreement with the experimental results within maximum 5% error.

  • This paper deals with self-tuning of fuzzy control systems. The fuzzy logic controller(FLC) has parameters that an: input and output scaling factors to effect control output. Tuning method is proposed for the scaling factor. In this paper. it is studied to control and to monitor the remote system statues using SOAP for communicate between the server part and the client part. The remote control system is controlled by using a web browser or a application program. The server part is waiting for the request of client part that uses internet network for communication each other and then the request is reached. the server part saves client data to the database and send a command set to the client part and then the client part sends command to controller in a cool chamber. The administrator can control and monitor the remote system just using a web browser. The effects of membership functions, defuzzification methods and scaling factors are investigated in the FLC system.
