  • Previous studies have examined the relationship between domain satisfaction and life satisfaction. However, a comprehensive investigation of satisfaction with multiple domains and their relative contributions to life satisfaction and hedonic balance are missing in the literature. And most studies were conducted in English speaking countries and only a few cross-cultural studies have been conducted. In the current research, we compared Korean and European Canadian university students to examine how domain satisfactions (satisfaction with healthy lifestyles, family relationships, appearance, financial situation, academic performance) are associated with life satisfaction and hedonic balance. We then examined the relative contributions of people's satisfaction ratings on the life domains to their life satisfaction and hedonic balance. Positive correlations were observed between satisfaction with each of the five life domains, and life satisfaction and hedonic balance across the two cultural groups. Interestingly, satisfactions with healthy lifestyles was the dominant predictor of Koreans' life satisfaction and hedonic balance. Satisfaction with appearance was the dominant predictor of European Canadians' life satisfaction and hedonic balance followed by satisfaction with healthy lifestyles. Overall, these results suggest that there are common life domains that contribute to subjective well-being and that there are specific life domains that may contribute more to subjective well-being depending on the culture.

Methods: Questionnaires were administered to 464 students attending three public elementary schools in O city from June 13 to June 16, 2006. The total sample size is 458 (response rate = 98.7%). Data were statistically analyzed by frequency analysis, cross tabulation, and multiple regression. Results: First, smoking behavior was significantly influenced by the factors of gender, self-concept, family structure, sibling smoking, school achievement, relationship with teachers, satisfaction with school life, and smoking friends. Theprevalence of ever-smoking was 12.7% among 6th grade students in this study. Students were most likely to initiate smoking in the 5thgrade with curiosity and smoke at their own home. Second, students showed negative attitude toward smoking overall. From the detailed section, students respondednegatively about smoking in public places while they thought that adult smoking with moderate level was okay. Student who showed positive attitudes toward smoking in the present study were significantly related to the factors of self-concept, family environment, parental and sibling smoking status, school achievement, satisfaction with school life, and smoking friends. Third, Students who had tried cigarette smoking were likely to report less negative attitudes toward tobacco than non-smoking students. Fourth, this study found that smoking friends were the most significant predictor of positives smoking attitudes. Other factors significantlyassociated with smoking attitudes were gender, relationship with friends, self-concept, relationship with teachers, paternal smoking status. • Through an examination of future societal development, it was found that the demographic structure is gradually aging, thus placing higher demands on elderly welfare centers. This study conducted surveys on three elderly day care centers in the entire region, aiming to enhance the pivotal role of elderly day care centers in the welfare facilities for the elderly. The current usage status, interior architectu/ral evaluations, and questionnaire surveys of these centers were analysed. The results of investigation into the architectural environment of the elderly day care centers showed that in terms of physical environment, smaller-scale centers did not lag behind larger ones in internal facilities, but larger-scale centers excelled in spatial utilization. Furthermore, the results of questionnaire survey results revealed correlations between family relationships, health status, level of assistance required, and satisfaction with facility usage, while no correlation was found between usage time, health status, and satisfaction with facility usage. This study conducted basic investigations such as architectural and physical surveys, and questionnaire surveys on elderly day care centers. Based on the survey results, future design practices should continuously explore and innovate to meet the needs of an aging society, further improve the community care system, provide more comprehensive and meticulous services for the elderly, and lay the foundation for enhancing the quality of life for the elderly and providing comfortable services.

  • Purpose: This study examined relationships among stress, stress coping strategies, and somatization in mothers-in-law from multi-cultural families in a rural area. Methods: Elderly mothers-in-law (n=227) living with foreign daughters-in-law completed a self-reporting questionnaire. Data were collected from April to August 2009. Questions related to stress (Visual Analog Scale, VAS), coping strategies (Coping Strategy Scale) for stress, and somatization (Symptom Check List 90, Revised). SPSS/WIN 12.0 program was used for descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Subjects had a moderate level of stress (5.03). There were significant differences in stress level according to age, educational level, religion, chronic disease, health status, number of children, agreement of an international marriage of her sons, satisfaction in living with a foreign daughter-in-law, and family conflict. Stress showed a significant positive correlation with offensive coping strategy, passive strategy, and somatization. Stress, offensive coping strategy, and passive coping strategy affected the level of somatization. Conclusion: In a family situation involving co-habitation of mother- and foreign daughter-in-law, increased stress experienced by the mother-in-law can lead to increased offensive and passive coping strategies, and increased somatization. More effective means of stress reduction are needed for mothers-in-law from multi-cultural families.

  • With using the 4th and 5th wave of KLoSA(Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging), this study analyzed the effect of the factors of Rowe and Kahn's successful aging model on the life satisfaction of older adults. The target population of this study was 1,385 who is older than 65. As data analysis, hierarchical multiple regression was used. The variables such as demographics, avoiding diseases and disability, high cognitive and physical function and engagement with life, relationship with adult children were entered hierarchically for the regression analysis. Since there are differences of longevity by gender, the difference of factors of successful aging were compared by marital status. In this study (besides Rowe and Kahn's successful aging model such as avoiding disease and disability, high cognitive and physical function, and engagement with life), the relationships with adult children were analyzed additionally. Findings show that married older adults were older and reside with their adult children twice more than those who do not have a spouse. According to research results, regular exercise and memory skills were important factors of affecting life satisfaction. Among the categories of active engagement, meeting with friends, relatives and neighbors were significant. Contact with their adult children by mail or phone were the most important factors affecting the older adults' life satisfaction. The three parts of successful aging were various depending on the operationalization of variables.
