  • With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) technology that allows the communications between things and devices over the Internet, a lot of researches on the IoT services, such as smart home or healthcare, have been progressed. In the existing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, however, since the underlying link-layer technologies, such as Bluetooth or ZigBee, do not use the Internet Protocol (IP) communication, those technologies are not suitable to provide the IoT services. Accordingly, this paper discusses how to provide the Internet services in the M2M communication, and propose an implementation of the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) over 6LoWPAN for providing IoT services in the BLE networks. Based on the implementation, we compared the performance between HTTP and CoAP for IoT communications. From the experimental results, we can see that the CoAP protocol gives better performance than the HTTP protocol with two times higher throughput, 21% faster transmission time, and 22% smaller amount of generated packets.

  • In the IoT environment, various things could be connected. Those connected things learn and operate themselves, by acquiring data. As human being, they have self-learning and self-operating systems. In the field of IoT study, therefore, the key issue is to design communication system connecting both of the two different types of subjects, human being(user) and the things. With the advent of the IoT environment, much research has been done in the field of UI design. It can be seen that research has been conducted to take complex factors into account through keywords such as multi-modality and interusability. However, the existing UI design method has limitations in structuring or testing interaction between things and users of IoT environment. Therefore, this paper suggests a new UI prototyping method. In this paper, the major analysis and studies are as follows: (1) defined what is the behavior process of the things (2) analyzed the existing IoT product (3) built a new framework driving personality types (4) extracted three representative personality models (5) applied the three models to the smart home service and tested UI prototyping. It is meaningful with that this study can confirm user experience (UX) about IoT service in a more comprehensive way. Moreover, the concept of the personality of things will be utilized as a tool for establishing the identity of artificial intelligence (AI) services in the future.

  • The number of industry wireless networks based on IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology deployed in large outdoor work sites, such as freight container terminal, is increasing these days. Wider service coverage, frequent movements of stations and high requirement on service reliability are main characteristics of these networks compared to the conventional IEEE 802.11 networks used in home, office and school. While the importance of these networks Bets higher, we can hardly find previous studies including concrete analysis on these networks based on actual experiments. We carried out several field experiments at a freight container terminal to analyze its IEEE 802.11 network and found out some problematic situations, such as over 50% retransmission rates and frequent disruption of communication link while a station is moving. We explain why these problematic situations happen and suggest some solutions, such as application of mesh technology, smart handoff based on location and movement pattern and adjustment of signal strength and channel allocation. Methods and tools used in the experiments are also detailed in the paper which may be helpful for similar future studies.

  • Today's healthcare, intelligent robots, smart home systems, and car sharing are already innovating with cutting-edge information and communication technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, the Internet of Intelligent Things, and Big data. It is deeply affecting our lives. In the factory, robots have been working for humans more than several decades (FA, OA), AI doctors are also working in hospitals (Dr. Watson), AI speakers (Giga Genie) and AI assistants (Siri, Bixby, Google Assistant) are working to improve Natural Language Process. Now, in order to understand AI, knowledge of mathematics becomes essential, not a choice. Thus, mathematicians have been given a role in explaining such mathematics that make these things possible behind AI. Therefore, the authors wrote a textbook 'Basic Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence' by arranging the mathematics concepts and tools needed to understand AI and machine learning in one or two semesters, and organized lectures for undergraduate and graduate students of various majors to explore careers in artificial intelligence. • Fast developments of broadcasting technologies since 1990s enabled not only High Definition Television service providing high quality audiovisual contents at home but also mobile broadcasting service providing audiovisual contents to high speed moving vehicle. Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) is one of the technologies developed for mobile broadcasting service, which has been successfully commercialized. One of the major technical breakthroughs achieved by T-DMB in addition to robust vehicular reception is an adoption of framework based on MPEG-4 System. It naturally enables integrated interactive data services by using Binary Format for Scene (BIFS) technology for scene description and representation of graphics object and Object Descriptor Framework representing multimedia service components as objects. T-DMB interactive data service has two fundamental limitations. Firstly, graphic data for interactive service should be always overlaid on top of a video not to be rendered out of it. Secondly, data for interactive service is only received by broadcasting channel. These limitations were considered as general in broadcasting systems. However, they are being considered as hard limitations for personalized data services using location information and user characteristics which are becoming widely used for data services of smart devices in these days. In this paper, the architecture of T-DMB hybrid data service is proposed which is utilizing broadcasting network, wireless internet and local storage for delivering BIFS data to overcome these limitations. This paper also presents hybrid BIFS technology to implement T-DMB hybrid data service while maintaining backward compatibility with legacy T-DMB players.

  • IoT(Internet of Things) can enable networking and computing using any devices is rapidly proliferated. In the existing IoT environment, bottlenecks and service delays can occur because it processes data and provides services to users using central processing based on Cloud. For this reason, Edge Computing processes data directly in IoT nodes and networks to provide the services to the users has attracted attention. Also, numerous researchers have been attracted to intelligent service efficiently based on Edge Computing. In this paper, expert system-based context awareness scheme for Edge Computing in IoT environment is proposed. The proposed scheme can provide customized services to the users using context awareness and process data in real-time using the expert system based on efficient cooperations of resource limited IoT nodes. The context awareness services can be modified by the users according to the usage purpose. The three service modes in the security system based on smart home are used to test the proposed scheme and the stability of the proposed scheme is proven by a comparison of the resource consumptions of the servers between the proposed scheme and the PC-based expert system.

  • Jeon refers to a type of Korean cuisine used as a side dish, made with various ingredients such as meat, vegetables, or fish, mixed with flour batter and coated with egg batter and then pan-fried on both sides with oil so that heat spreads through them well. The aim of this study was to provide a cornerstone of further research on Korean dietary life, by reviewing types, recipes and names of Jeon recorded in ancient cookbooks (Korean literatures) and by analyzing changes in recipes to make Jeon, which our ancestors used wisely as one type of side dish. Considering developments and changes recorded in old documents, the Jeon recipe appeared relatively later than the recipes for grilling, steaming et al, which had been developed much earlier, and it had not been recorded until the 1600s. Changes of Jeon recipes by time period are as follows. In the 1600s, there were three recipes: frying only with grain batter after preparation of ingredients, frying right after preparation of ingredients, and putting ingredients on already fried watery batter. These three recipes were still used in the 1700s, in addition to a new recipe, in which ingredients were oil-fried to be skewered. Today's recipe in which prepared ingredients are fried after getting coated with flour and egg only appeared in 1800s. This has been the main recipe for Jeon ever since. In that time period, there was more variety of recipes and ingredients than before. For instance, Jeon was used for soup or steamed dishes instead of being served as a dish itself. Buchimgae with mixed ingredients was also considered Jeon. In the 1900s, there appeared more names for Jeon as more sorts of ingredients got used, even though there were no new recipes for Jeon. The above-mentioned historical records show that traditional recipes for Jeon have been applied to various dishes, using diverse ingredients, and it might be a smart solution to today's problematic dietary habits involving excessive intake of nutrients, in that it provides a healthy way to add fat. In the same sense, the recipe for Jeon can play an active role in internationalization of Korean foods, in which healthiness is a main feature. According to ancient documents, the recipes for Jeon were used even for meals that were not side dishes, such as Jun-Gwa (Jung-Gwa), Jun-Yak and fried rice-cake. Also, there were dishes using the same recipes even without carrying the name of Jeon, like Buchim or Jijim. This might be worthy of further examination in culinary science.

  • Ultra-wide-angle wireless endoscopes are demonstrated in this paper. The endoscope is composed of an ultra-wide-angle camera module and wireless transmission module. A lens unit with the ultra-wide FOV of 162 degrees is designed and manufactured. The lens, image sensor, and camera processor unit are packaged together in a $3{\times}3{\times}9-cm3$ case. The wireless transmission modules are implemented based on UWB- and WiFi-based platform, respectively. The UWB-based module can transmit HD video to a computer in resolution of $2048{\times}1536$ (QXGA) and the frame rate of 15 fps in MJPEG compression mode. The maximum data transfer rate reaches 41.2 Mbps. The FOV and the resolution of the endoscope is comparable to a medical-grade endoscope. The FOV and resolution is ~3X and 16X higher than that of a commercial high-performance WiFi endoscope, respectively. The WiFi-based module streams out video to a smart device with th maximum date transfer rate of 1.5 Mbps at the resolution of $640{\times}480$ (VGA) and the frame rate of 30 fps in MJPEG compression mode. The implemented components show the feasibility of cheap medical-grade wireless electronic endoscopes, which can be effectively used in u-healthcare, emergency treatment, home-healthcare, remote diagnosis, etc.

  • The IoT technology is a field that applies and converges the technologies in the existing industrial environment, instead of new technologies. The IoT technology is releasing various application services converged with other industries such as smart home, healthcare, construction, and automobile, and it is also possible to secure the work efficiency and convenience of users of IoT-based technologies. However, the security threats occurring in the IoT-based technology environment are succeeding to the vulnerability of the existing wireless network environment. And the occurrence of new and variant attacks in the combination with the ICT convergence environment, is causing damages. Thus, in the IoT technology-based environment, it would be necessary to have researches on the safe transmission of messages in the communication environment between user and device, and device and device. This thesis aims to design a safe communication protocol in the IoT-based technology environment. Regarding the suggested communication protocol, this thesis performed the safety analysis on the attack techniques occurring in the IoT technology-based environment. And through the performance evaluation of the existing PKI-based certificate issuance system and the suggested communication protocol, this thesis verified the high efficiency(about 23%) of communication procedure. Also, this thesis verified the reduced figure(about 65%) of the issued quantity of certificate compared to the existing issuance system and the certificate management technique.

  • Two types of polymer-based optical splitters with $200{\mu}m$ large core are presented for optical multimode networks, such as smart home networks, intelligent automotive networks, etc. Optical splitters that have 1:1 symmetric and 9:1 asymmetric structure were fabricated by a ultra violet(UV)-imprint technology using a deep etched Si(silicon) master by the Bosch process. In this paper, we successfully fabricated the symmetric and asymmetric optical splitters with suitable optical network applications.
