A Comparative Study on the Use of High-strength Steel to the Medium-span Bridges (중ㆍ소규모 강교량의 고강도강 적용성 비교)

  • A study has been performed to investigate the applicability of the high-strength steel to the medium-span composite girder bridges. A two- and four-girder simple and continuous bridges are considered. A proper span-to-depth ratio for the model bridges with SM490 and SM570 was evaluated by using the section optimization program, respectively. For the determined span-to-depth ratio, deflections and fatigue performance were also investigated. It was acknowledged that the high-strength steel reduces the weight of girder but the increase of deflection and fatigue stress should be considered especially in the positive moment area.

A Representative Stress for Unified Fatigue Damage Model

  • The hot spot stress approach and the notch strain approach are discussed with some results of them. And a stress model that can be applicable to several types of weld joints with single S-N curve of the base material. The stress model uses the geometric characteristics of the stress distribution vicinity of weld joints. The model was applied to five different weld joins(the base material is SM490B). By the representative stress, the experimental fatigue data are plotted very closely to the S-N curve of the base material.

  • Underframes of rolling stock structure are made of hot rolled steel of SS400 or SM490A. While these underframe steels are designed to satisfy the mechanical requirements, their corrosion behavior also should taken into account. Underframes are coated to prevent corrosion, but they are often defected by external factors to result in local corrosion which may cause the weakness of mechanical strength. Thus, the corrosion of underframe steels was examined through atmospheric corrosion test to estimate service life and safety.

  • Structural tests were performed to investigate the structural performance of concrete-filled steel tube column using different strength steels in their flange and web with high-strength steel HSA800 and mild steel SM490, respectively. The test parameters included the strength of column flange and infill concrete, and effect of concrete infill. Connection between different grade steels were welded using the electrode appropriate for mild steel and verified its performance. To evaluate the behavior of test specimens, eccentric loading tests were performed and the results were compared with the prediction by current design codes. Axial load and moment carrying capacity of test specimens increased with the yield strength of compression flange and weld fracture occurred after the specimen shows full strength. The prediction result for axial load-bending moment relationship and effective flexural stiffness gave good agreement with the test result.

Analysis of Shear Buckling Stresses for Steel Pipes by Detailed Parametric Study (매개변수해석을 통한 원형 강관의 전단좌굴응력 상세분석)

  • Shear buckling stresses of steel pipes due to the lateral forces have been analyzed via parametric analysis. Detailed FEM models are prepared, and steel types, thickness, radii and length of steel pipes are selected as parameters. STK400, STK490 and SM570 are used and the thickness of pipe is 2mm and 40mm. The radii(R) and lengths(L) are determined based on the values satisfying the following relationship as R/t=20~400 and L/R=1~3. The shear buckling stresses decrease for all types of considered steels as R/t increase from 20 to 200. High strength steels are more sensitive to R/t, and also have an bigger effect on shear buckling stresses than low strength steels. It is found that shear buckling stresses decrease as L/R increases, showing that the steel pipes become weak as the length of the steel pipe increases.

  • The current AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 specifications have been found to underestimate the flexural strength of longitudinally reinforced plate girders. This is because the web-flange interaction is not considered appropriately when a web is reinforced. The buckling strength of compression flange increases due to the improved rotational restraint to the compression flange. Also, the compression flange and the longitudinal stiffener could constrain the web rotation, so that a certain area of the web reaches yield strength. In this study, a model for evaluating the flexural strength is proposed for plate girders reinforced with one line of longitudinal stiffeners, considering the increase of the buckling strength of the compression flange and the actual stress distribution of the web. The flexural strengths of the conventional steel(SM490) and the high-strength steel(HSB800) plate girders were evaluated from the nonlinear analysis and the applicability of the proposed model was analyzed.

A Study on the Evaluation of Tension-Compression Fatigue Characteristics of Glass Fiber/Epoxy 4-Harness Satin Woven Laminate Composite for the Railway Bogie Application (철도차량 대차 적용 유리섬유/에폭시 4-매 주자직 적층 복합재의 인장-압축 피로특성 평가 연구)

  • This paper describes the evaluations of tension-compression fatigue characteristics and life for glass fiber/epoxy laminate composite applied to railway bogie to reduce weight. Test samples of tension-compression fatigue were composed of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness woven laminate composites with different stacking sequence of warp-direction, fill-direction and ${\pm}45^{\circ}$-direction. The tension-compression fatigue test was conducted with stress ratio (R) of -1 and frequency of 5Hz. Goodman diagram were used to evaluate the fatigue characteristics and life of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite. Anti-buckling jig was designed to prevent buckling of specimen under compression load. The test results showed that the fatigue characteristics of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite with stacking sequence of warp-direction had a good performance in comparison with that of SM490 used to conventional metal railway bogie.

A Study on Structural Characteristics of SM490A TMC Thick Steel Plates (SM490A TMC 후판강재의 소재 및 용접부 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The study discussed in this paper investigated the material characteristics for the Thermo-Mechanical Control Process(TMCP) plates, which are controlled by several factors such as rolling, cold-stripping, cooling rate, and fixed carbon quantity. The suitability of thick TMCP steel plates as structural steel was also estimated through several experiments and with the us of a statistical method to analyze mill certificate sheets provided by the manufacturer. The results of this study are as follows: the TMCP steel plates showed stable values of the composition parameter ($P_cm$) and the carbon equivalents ($C_eq$ ) with satisfied yield strength, ultimate strength, and low-yield ratio.

  • The analysis and design of steel frames are usually carried out under the assumption that the connections of beam-to-column are either fully rigid or ideally pinned. However the connections actually show semi-rigid behavior in many cases. The authors investigated the structural behavior of simi-rigid connection with reformed T-stub by using of SM490 steel. The objective of the study is to investigate the structural behavior of the beam-to-column semi-rigid connection with reformed T-stub, which is made of SS400 steel. The beam-to-column connections by using reformed T-stubs were tested under monotonic loading and cyclic loading condition. The possibility of application of semi-rigid connections with reformed T-stubs was ascertained from test results.
