  • This study compares marital satisfaction between male and female rural migrants and explores the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The survey included 483 migrants living in rural communities of North Jeolla Province and South Jeolla Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tables, the t-test, correlations, and a hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. According to the results, marital satisfaction was higher in men than in women. In addition, the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction were greater in men than in women. The major determinant of marital satisfaction in men was economical preparation, whereas that in women was family values. Economical preparation for rural living was more important for men, and the sufficient understanding and internalization of rural living was more important for women. In particular, family values represented the main variable between men and women in terms of marital satisfaction. These results suggest that family relationships may be the most important factor influencing rural migrants' marital satisfaction and that spousal relationships may be the core factor influencing family relationships.

The higher the IADL, the more sufficient the cost of living, the higher the education level and the more the farming time that the rural elderly had, the lower was the level of depression that they had. Second, the life satisfaction of the rural elderly was affected by the cost of living, depression, IADL, need for life services, and gender. The more sufficient the cost of living, the lower the level of depression, the higher the IADL, the less the need for life services, the higher was the life satisfaction that they experienced. Third, the results of the path analysis revealed that life satisfaction was influenced both directly and indirectly. The factors that affected life satisfaction directly were the cost of living, IADL, need for life services, and gender. The factors that affect life satisfaction indirectly were the IADL, cost of living, education level, and farming. • This study aims to derive the life service supply structure in rural areas of Jeollabuk-do through the analysis of the centrality of life service in Eup/Myeon central area. In addition, mutual relationship between the settlement system in rural areas and the current status of the supply of living services in Eup/Myeon areas were also analyzed. In particular, in this study, the entire administrative districts of Jeollabuk-do are intended to be established as a single wide area unit, breaking away from the current status of living service supply at the Si/Gun level. This study mainly conducted with three points. First, the spatial range of Eup/Myeon central districts with centrality in terms of living service supply was established. Second, the hierarchical structure of the living service supply system in the rural areas of Jeollabuk-do was investigated through the analysis of the living service supply level based on the centrality and geographical distribution in Eup/Myeon central districts. Based on the analysis results, the central place system of rural areas in Jeollabuk-do was established in terms of living service supply. Third, through the analysis of the living service functions distributed in the central area, and the type of living service supply by hierarchy was identified.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the factors related to depression of female elderly living alone by region. Data for this study was based on the 2011 National Survey on Elderly. Total of 1,684(689 rural elderly, 995 urban) community samples of female elderly living alone participated in this study. Even though there was no difference of depression score by region, this study found that the effects of factors on depression were significantly different by region. Yearly income, subjective health, balanced exchange of emotional support and satisfaction with their children were significantly associated with depression of both rural and urban female elderly living alone. For rural female elderly living alone, average daily television viewing time, number of close friends and frequency of contact with friends/neighbors were significant predictors to their depression. In the case of urban female elderly living alone, exercise, frequency of message, email or telephone contact with friends/ neighbors and balanced exchange of economic support contributed significantly to the prediction of depression. Subjective health had the strongest effect on depression for both rural and urban female elderly living alone.

  • This study analyzes the effect of the level of satisfaction with the living environment of rural people on migration. The analysis data were used by the Rural Development Administration for the survey of welfare systems for farmers and fishermen in 2017, and samples of 3,776 were used for the analysis. The analysis variables were divided into a group of migrants, a group of permanent residents, and a group of decision-keeping, and the level of satisfaction with the living environment of each of the 10 rural areas was used as an independent variable. According to the analysis results, the basic living base and safety of rural residents were having a positive effect. The results show that the projects for developing rural areas, which increase the basic living base, are making substantial contributions to preventing the breakaway of the rural population. Safety has been neglected in the area of rural planning, but if the level of discontent is not enough, it has had the greatest impact on the livelihoods of rural residents. Welfare and cultural leisure set the main demand level for welfare and cultural leisure to the elderly and vulnerable classes, and interpret it as a result of weakened defense against stress from relocation of residence, difficulty of migration due to low income levels, and migration. Therefore, the paradoxical analysis results could be interpreted as showing that measures to increase the satisfaction of the people on welfare and cultural leisure should be taken.

  • Recently, South Korea has prepared laws and systems to systematically manage rural spaces in response to the era of population decline and is making various efforts to promote related policies. However, various basic studies that can support this are still insufficient. In particular, in this study, the functions and roles of each settlement class were established along with the classification of the sedentary classes in rural areas, and the classification system for rural living services was established, and the hierarchy by functional facilities and the minimum standards for vulnerable areas (accessibility) were established. Specifically, in this study, the settlement class was divided into 4 classes of "central area - midpoint area - small point area - hinterland", and each function and role was presented, and the rural living service classification system was finally reestablished as 10 sectors and 31 functional facilities. In addition, the hierarchy and accessibility standards of rural living service functional facilities was set within 5 to 15 minutes for 'lower and basic services', within 10 to 20 minutes for 'medium and basic services', within 15 to 30 minutes for 'intermediate and complex services', within 20 to 60 minutes for 'high car/complex service' and within 10 minutes for 'urgent service'.
