In this study, the rheological properties of nitromethane gel propellants on nano/micron sized gelling agent are investigated. Silicon dioxide is used as the gellant with 5 wt%, 6.5 wt% and 8 wt% concentration, respectively, where the measurements are conducted under steady-state shear flow conditions using a rotational rheometer. The nitromethane/silicon dioxide gel showed non-Newtonian flow behavior for the entire experimental shear rate ranges. The gel fuels with nano-sized gellant had a slightly higher viscosity than the gel fuels with micron-sized one for low shear rate range. Additionally, it was found that Herschel-Bulkley model can hardly describe the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant, but the NM model(by Teipel and Forter-Barth) is better suited to explain the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant.

In this study, a plume exhausted from rocket nozzle is investigated by using an unstructured 2-dimensional axisymmetirc DSMC code at various altitude. The small back-pressure to total-pressure ratio($P_b/P_o$) and large $P_b/P_o$ represent low and high altitude condition, respectively. At low altitude, the plume shows a typical complicated structure (e.g. Mach disk) of underexpanded jet while the high altitude plume experiences plain expansion. The various features of exhaust plume is discussed including density, translational/rotational temperature, Mach number and Knudsen number. The results shows that even at 20 km altitude where the freestream Knudsen number is small as $1.5{\times}10^{-5}$, the transitional and rarefied flow regimes can occur locally within the plume. It confirms the necessity of DSMC computation at low altitude.

Tidal current power is one of the energy sources of the ocean. Electricity can be generated by converting the flow energy of the current into the rotational energy of a turbine. Unlike tidal barrage, tidal current power does not require dams, which have a severe environmental impact. A floating-type tidal current power device can reduce the expensive support and installation cost, which usually account for approximately 41% of the total cost. It can also be deployed in relatively deep water using tensioned wires. The dynamic behavior of a floater and turbine force are coupled because the thrust and moment of the turbine affect the floater excursion, and the motion of the floater can affect the incoming speed of the flow into the turbine. To maximize the power generation and stabilize the system, the coupled motion of the floater and turbine must be extensively analyzed. However, unlike pile-fixed devices, there have been few studies involving the motion analysis of a moored-type tidal current power device. In this study, the commercial program OrcaFlex 10.1a was used for a time domain motion analysis. In addition, in-house code was used for an iterative calculation to solve the coupled problems. As a result, it was found that the maximum mooring load of 200 kN and the floater excursion of 5.5 m were increased by the turbine effect. The load that occurred on the mooring system satisfied the safety factor of 1.67 suggested by API. The optimum mooring system for the floating tidal current power device was suggested to maximize the power generation and stability of the floater.

Recently, technical trend in machine tools is focused on enhancing of speed, accuracy and reliability. Such high speed usually results in thermal displacement and structural deformation. To minimize such thermal effect, most precision machine tools adopt high precision cooling system. This study proposes a temperature control for an oil cooler system using PI control with fuzzy logic. In a cooler system, the refrigerant flow rate is controlled by rotational speed of the compressor, where the outlet oil temperature is selected as the control variable. The fuzzy control rules iteratively correct PID parameters to minimize the error, difference between the outlet temperature and the reference one. Here, the ambient temperature is used as the reference one. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, a series of experiments are conducted for an oil cooler system of machine tools, and the results are compared with the ones of a conventional PID control. The experimental results show that the proposed method has advantages of smaller overshoot and smaller steady state error.
The reaction of gas-phase atomic hydrogen with oxygen atoms chemisorbed on a silicon surface is studied by use of the classical trajectory approach. We have calculated the probability of the OH formation and energy deposit of the reaction exothermicity in the newly formed OH in the gas-surface reaction H(g) + O(ad)/Si${\rightarrow}$ OH(g) + Si. All reactive events occur in a single impact collision on a subpicosecond scale, following the Eley-Rideal mechanism. These events occur in a localized region around the adatom site on the surface. The reaction probability is dependent upon the gas temperature and shows the maximum near 1000 K, but it is essentially independent of the surface temperature. The reaction probability is also independent upon the initial excitation of the O-Si vibration. The reaction energy available for the product state is carried away by the desorbing OH in its translational and vibrational motions. When the initial excitation of the O-Si vibration increases, translational and vibrational energies of OH rise accordingly, while the energy shared by rotational motion varies only slightly. Flow of energy between the reaction zone and the solid has been incorporated in trajectory calculations, but the amount of energy propagated into the solid is only a few percent of the available energy released in the OH formation.

A particle image velocimetry (PlV) technique has been applied to measure the quantitative flow field characteristics behind a road vehicle with/without an air spoiler attached on its trunk and to estimate its effect on the wake. A vehicle model scaled in the ratio of 1/43 is set up in the mid-section of a closed-loop water tunnel. The Reynolds number based on the vehicle length is $10^5$. To investigate the three-dimensional structure of the recirculation zone and vortices, measurements are carried out on the planes both parallel and perpendicular to the free stream, respectively. The results show significant differences in the recirculation region and the vorticity distributions according to the existence of the air spoiler. The focus and the saddle point, appearing just behind the air spoiler, are disposed differently along the spanwise direction. Regarding the streamwise vortices, the air spoiler produces large wing tip vortices. They have opposite rotational directions to C-pillar vortices which are commonly observed in case that the air spoiler is absent. The wing tip vortices generate the down-force and as a result, they can make the vehicle more stable in driving.

In order to improve the performance of a free power turbine type gas turbine engine by injecting the atomized water into a compressor inlet., a study on Moisture Air Turbine (MAT) cycle was proposed. Compressor work by air-water mixtures in phase change was theoretically considered, and it was found that the water evaporation might reduce the compressor work. Cycle model calculations predicted that power increments of 16.2%, 14.9% and 12.6% by 1.0% water to the air flow rate at the compressor intake with rotational shaft speeds of 1000, 1210, 1350 rps were obtained, and also thermal efficiency due to the reduction of compressor work was improved.

In this study, a component map generation method using experimental data and the genetic algorithms are newly proposed. In order to generate the performance map for components of this engine, after obtaining engine performance data through many experimental tests, and then the third order equations which have relationships the mass flow function the pressure ratio and the isentropic efficiency as to the engine rotational speed were derived by using the genetic algorithms. A steady-state performance analysis was performed with the generated maps of the compressor by the commercial gas turbine performance analysis program GASTURB. In comparison, it was found that the component maps can be generated from the experimental test data by using the genetic algorithms, and it was confirmed that the analysis results using the generated maps were very similar to those using the scaled maps from the GASTURB.
A turbopump system composed of two pumps and one turbine is considered. The turbine composed of a nozzle and a rotor is used to drive the pumps while gas passes through the nozzle and potential energy is converted to kinetic energy, which forces the rotor blades to spin. In this study, an aerodynamic design of turbine system is investigated with some pre-determined design requirements (i.e., pressure ratio, rotational speed, required power, etc.) following Liquid Rocket Engine (L.R.E.) system specifications. For simplicity of turbine system, impulse-type rotor blades for open-type L.R.E. have been chosen. Usually, the open-type turbine system requires low mass flow-rate compared to close-type system. In this study, a partial admission nozzle is adopted to maximize the efficiency of the open-type turbine system. A design methodology of turbine system was introduced. Especially, partial admission nozzle was designed by means of simple empirical correlations between efficiency and configuration of the nozzle. Finally, a turbine system design is presented for a 10 ton thrust level of L.R.E.

The study of bacterial flagellar swimming motion remains an interesting and challenging research subject in the fields of hydrodynamics and bio-locomotion. This swimming motion is characterized by very low Reynolds numbers, which is unique and time reversible. In particular, the effect of rotation of helical flagella of bacterium on swimming motion requires detailed multi-disciplinary analysis. Clear understanding of such swimming motion will not only be beneficial for biologists but also to engineers interested in developing nanorobots mimicking bacterial swimming. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a three dimensional single flagellated bacteria has been developed and the fluid flow around the flagellum is investigated. CFD-based modeling studies were conducted to find the variables that affect the forward thrust experienced by the swimming bacterium. It is found that the propulsive force increases with increase in rotational velocity of flagellum and viscosity of surrounding fluid. It is also deduced from the study that the forward force depends on the geometry of helical flagella (directly proportional to square of the helical radius and inversely proportional to pitch).
