Thick composite disks are utilized in the fast-rotating machines such as turbine disks, flywheels, and so on. The effects of rotating speed on the dynamic characteristics of thick composite disks are deeply studied in this paper. The dynamic governing equations of a rotating composite disk including transverse shear and rotary inertia are derived and then formulated into the finite element equation. Isotropic, circumferentially reinforced disk, and radially reinforced disk are selected for the numerical analysis. The inclusion of the transverse shear and rotary inertia into the governing equation of the rotating disks makes the natural frequency reduced as well as the critical speed. The present results show that the rotation of a thick disk may not reduce the effect of transverse shear and rotary inertia depending on anisotropy, thickness ratio and mode, unlike the results reported in other studies.

A modeling method for the bending vibration analysis of rotating Timoshenko beams with concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia is presented. The shear and rotary inertia effects become critical for the accurate estimation of the natural frequencies and modeshapes as the slenderness ratio decreases. The effect of the concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia on the natural frequencies are also investigated with the modeling method.

A modeling method for the flapwise bending vibration of a rotating cantilever beam which has small slenderness ratio is presented in this paper. It is shown that as the slenderness ratio decreases the shear and rotary inertia effects increase. Such effects become critical for the accurate estimation of the natural frequencies and modeshapes, especially higher frequencies and modes, as the angular speed increases. It is also shown that the flapwise bending natural frequencies are higher than the chordwise bending natural frequencies. The discrepancy between first natural frequencies are especially significant when the hub radius ratio is small.
Multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses with/without rotary inertias are widely used in engineering applications, but in the literature for free vibration analysis of such structural systems; Bernoulli-Euler Beam Theory (BEBT) without axial force effect is used. The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler single-span beams carrying a number of spring-mass systems, Bernoulli-Euler multiple-step and multi-span beams carrying multiple spring-mass systems and multiple point masses are plenty, but that of Timoshenko multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias with axial force effect is fewer. The purpose of this paper is to utilize Numerical Assembly Technique (NAT) and Differential Transform Method (DTM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of the axial-loaded Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying a number of intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias. The model allows analyzing the influence of the shear and axial force effects, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of the multiple-step beams by using Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). At first, the coefficient matrices for the intermediate lumped mass with rotary inertia, the step change in cross-section, left-end support and right-end support of the multiple-step Timoshenko beam are derived from the analytical solution. After the derivation of the coefficient matrices, NAT is used to establish the overall coefficient matrix for the whole vibrating system. Finally, equating the overall coefficient matrix to zero one determines the natural frequencies of the vibrating system and substituting the corresponding values of integration constants into the related eigenfunctions one determines the associated mode shapes. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias for the different values of axial force are given in tables. The first five mode shapes are presented in graphs. The effects of axial force, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of Timoshenko multiple-step beam are investigated.
This paper presents the dynamic stability of a cantilevered Timoshenko beam with a concentrated mass, partially attached to elastic foundations, and subjected to a follower force. Governing equations are derived from the extended Hamilton's principle, and FEM is applied to solve the discretized equation. The influence of some parameters such as the elastic foundation parameter, the positions of partial elastic foundations, shear deformations, the rotary inertia of the beam, and the mass and the rotary inertia of the concentrated mass on the critical flutter load is investigated. Finally, the optimal attachment ratio of partial elastic foundation that maximizes the critical flutter load is presented.
A semi-analytical method is presented for accurately prediction of the free vibration behavior of generally laminated composite plates with arbitrary boundary conditions. The method employs the technique of separation of spatial variables within Hamilton's principle to obtain the equations of motion, including two systems of coupled ordinary homogeneous differential equations. Subsequently, by applying the laminate constitutive relations into the resulting equations two sets of coupled ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients, in terms of displacements, are achieved. The obtained differential equations are solved for the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes, with the use of the exact state-space approach. The formulation is exploited in the framework of the first-order shear deformation theory to incorporate the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The efficiency and accuracy of the present method are demonstrated by obtaining solutions to a wide range of problems and comparing them with finite element analysis and previously published results.
Free vibrations of steel-concrete composite beams are analyzed by using the dynamic stiffness approach. The coupled equations of motion of the composite beams are derived with help of the Hamilton's principle. The effects of the shear deformation and rotary inertia of the two beams as well as the transverse and axial deformations of the stud connectors are included in the formulation. The dynamic stiffness matrix is developed on the basis of the exact general solutions of the homogeneous governing differential equations of the composite beams. The use of the dynamic stiffness method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a particular steel-concrete composite beam with various boundary conditions is demonstrated. The accuracy and effectiveness of the present model and formulation are validated by comparison of the present results with the available solutions in literature.

This paper addresses the effect of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia on the natural frequency of beams under axial loads. It has been reported in the author's paper using a finite element analysis that the Timoshenko effect in a rotating disk deceases and then increases again with increasing rotation speed. To validate the phenomenon, the simply-supported beams under uniform tension are selected in this study since they have exact solutions in vibration problem. The results show that the axial tension in beams would not make the Timoshenko effect decrease monotonically but could make the effect increase again unlike the results reported in the other studies for beams.
In this study, an exact transfer matrix expression for a twisted uniform beam considering the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia is developed. The particular transfer matrix is derived by applying the distributed mass and transcendental function while using a local coordinate system. The results obtained from this method are independent for a number of subdivided elements, and this method can determine the required number of exact solutions for the free vibration characteristics of a twisted uniform Timoshenko beam using a single element. In addition, it can be used as a useful numerical method for the computation of high-order natural frequencies. To validate the accuracy of the proposed method, the computed results are compared with those reported in the existing literature, and the comparison results indicate notably good agreement. In addition, the method is used to investigate the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia for a twisted beam.

A modeling method for the modal analysis of a rotating cross-ply composite beam based on Timoshenko beam theory is presented. To analyze the composite beam exactly, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. Linear differential equations of motion are derived using the assumed mode method. For the modeling, hybrid deformation variables are employed and approximated to derive the equations of motion. The effects of the dimensionless angular velocity and the slenderness ratio parameter on the variations of modal characteristics are investigated
