  • This study for prediction of startup characteristics for 30 tonf liquid rocket engine TP-GG-CC coupled test was performed on the basis of the previous TP-GG test and prediction results. For determining the valve sequence the startup analysis was performed by the specified program for several main valve time and the adequate valve sequence for startup could be obtained.

  • Qualification test range for Lox/Kerosene gas generator cyle liquid rocket engine was determined by considering engine dispersion and flight inlet conditions. With various pump characteristics, the operation range of components and system was investigated through dispersion analysis. The variation of engine performance shows opposite trends in calibration and dispersion.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted to investigate and characterize the unsteadiness of flow structure and oscillatory vacuum pressure inside of a supersonic diffuser equipped to simulate the high-altitude rocket test on the ground. A physical model of concern includes a rocket motor, a vacuum chamber, and a diffuser, which have axisymmetric configurations, using nitrogen gas as a driving fluid. Emphasis is placed on investigating physical phenomena of very complex and oscillatory flow evolutions in the diffuser operating at very close to the starting condition, i.e. minimum starting condition, which is one of major important parameters in diffuser design points of view.

  • The high-frequency data acquisition system of the rocket engine test facility has been updated to perform hot-firing tests of 7 ton-class liquid rocket engine combustion chambers which will be used for the third stage of the Korea space launch vehicle II. The paper deals with the design of the updated high-frequency data acquisition system and explains its main functions.

  • The Cold flow and ignition tests have been performed for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf liquid rocket engine thrust chamber which was designed and manufactured on the basis of the previous development experience of a 30-tonf liquid rocket engine thrust chamber. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the facility supply pipelines and the filling time of the cooling kerosene were obtained through the cold flow tests. The ignition cyclogram was determinded using the results and the ignition test was successfully carried out. The acquired data and test technique of present ignition test will be used in hot firing tests.

  • The KSR-III rocket developed by KARI is the first rocket vehicle which is adopting the liquid propellant rocket engine system in Korea and its flight test was successfully done last year, KSR-III is a sounding rocket class launch vehicle, but there is a sense to accomplish design, manufacture, performance test and finally its flight test by domestic technology. In this paper, the authors are intended to introduce the multi-purpose test facility(PTA-II Test Facility) which is constructed for the variety of tests on KSR-III feeding system(single component tests, verification tests, cold flow tests and combustion tests) and its firing test results.

  • A design of a subscale solid propellant rocket motor was conducted to do the similitude experiments for the large scale rocket motor. One of the main factor to subscale was the mach number of the solid propellant flume through a nozzle exit The analysis of the flume flow was done to obtain the mach number for the large and subscale rocket motor. The flume shapes on the non dimensional axises by the nozzle exit diameter was matched each other. The propellant grain of a subscale solid rocket motor was designed by the profile of pressure vs time obtained by the mach number of the flume shape. Some analyses of the theoretical solution were compared with the results of the ground static test.

  • A computational analysis of nozzle flow characteristics and plume structure using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model was conducted to examine performance of the supersonic nozzle employed in a small liquid-rocket engine for ground firing test. Computed results and experimental outcome of 2-D converging-diverging nozzle flow were compared for verifying the computational capability as well as the turbulence model validity. Numerical computations of 2-D axisymmetric nozzle flow was carried out with the selected model. As a result, flow separation with backflow appeared around the nozzle exit. This investigation was reported as a background data for the optimal nozzle design of small liquid-propellant rocket engine for ground test.

  • A Liquid Rocket Engine(LRE) ground firing test facility was built in Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in 2001 to develop the LRE for the first Korean liquid rocket, KSR-III. Around 170 tests were conducted since its establishment until recently by September 2006, and in the meantime, a considerable improvements were made in the capability. This paper describes the outline, conducted tests and operation techniques which have been accumulated through the operation of KARI LRE ground firing test facility.
