  • The inherent reliability of a product is primarily determined in the design stage, and therefore, design engineers should be able to design reliability into the product in an efficient manner. Especially, the product should be designed such that its reliability is robust to various noise factors encountered in production and field environments. The Taguchi method can be effectively used for this purpose. However, there exist only a few attempts to integrate the Taguchi method with reliability design, and in addition, the existing works do not sufficiently consider the robustness and/or the distinction between noise and acceleration factors. This paper develops a unified approach to robust reliability design assuming that accelerated life tests are conducted at each combination of design and noise conditions. First, an experimental structure for assigning not only acceleration but also noise factors is presented. Second, the reliability at the use condition is estimated using the assumed accelerated life test model. Third, reliabilities are transformed into 'efforts' using an effort function which reflects the degree of difficulty involved in improving the reliability. Finally, an optimal setting of design parameters is determined based on the mean and standard deviation of the effort values. The above approach is illustrated with an example of a paper feeder design.

  • Identity recognition in real environment with a reliable mode is a key issue in human computer interaction (HCI). In this paper, we present a robust person identification system considering score-based optimal reliability measure of audio-visual modalities. We propose an extension of the modified reliability function by introducing optimizing parameters for both of audio and visual modalities. For degradation of visual signals, we have applied JPEG compression to test images. In addition, for creating mismatch in between enrollment and test session, acoustic Babble noises and artificial illumination have been added to test audio and visual signals, respectively. Local PCA has been used on both modalities to reduce the dimension of feature vector. We have applied a swarm intelligence algorithm, i.e., particle swarm optimization for optimizing the modified convection function's optimizing parameters. The overall person identification experiments are performed using VidTimit DB. Experimental results show that our proposed optimal reliability measures have effectively enhanced the identification accuracy of 7.73% and 8.18% at different illumination direction to visual signal and consequent Babble noises to audio signal, respectively, in comparison with the best classifier system in the fusion system and maintained the modality reliability statistics in terms of its performance; it thus verified the consistency of the proposed extension.

  • The reconfigurable control systems based on feedback controls are utilized to compensate for damages of actuators in control systems. Such systems have multiple feedback controls and switch them in accordance with the degrees of the failures of the actuators. In order to be able to assess those systems, this paper develops a method to obtain reliabilities of reconfigurable dynamical systems which are interconnected in parallel / series configuration. By calculating reliabilities of interconnected dynamical systems, it is possible to assess many dynamical systems by comparing their reliabilities. Firstly, reliabilities of subsystems are obtained according to the definitions of the failures in terms of robust reliability for each subsystem. Then, the reliability of overall system is calculated from reliabilities of subsystems, using the methodology employed for probabilistic safety assessment. Failure rates of subsystems with feedbacks for reconfiguration change in certain time periods because of the switching of feedback controls. In order to deal with this, combinations of subsystems which compose overall system for each time period are derived by the methodology mentioned above and then integrated to calculate the reliability of overall system for a specific time. An illustrative example shows the validity and details of the proposed method.

  • Purpose: Clarify the cause of the noise by the front wheel strut insulator, which is located in close proximity to the driver's seat. Methods: The improvement mechanism was confirmed through failure analysis and reproduction test of the joint generation mechanism. In addition, the main factors were analyzed through principal test. Results: This paper describes the mechanism of occurrence of noise due to deterioration and hardness increase of rubber, deformation on severe road surface, foreign matter and water inflow in cold weather. Conclusion: We found that the insulator and body deformation can be minimized without increasing the thickness of the body and the insulator and reinforcing the body by dispersing the input load by applying load distribution structure instead of the local forming structure of the insulator in the insulator robust structure.

  • This paper, being the second in a two-part series, presents the robust performance of the proposed design method which can enhance a reliability-based design optimization(RBDO) under the uncertainties of probabilistic models. The robust performances of the solutions obtained by the proposed method, described in the Part 1, are investigated through the parametric studies. A 10-bar truss example is considered, and the uncertain parameters include the number of data observed, and the variations of applied loadings and allowable stresses. The numerical results show that the proposed method can produce a consistent result despite of the large variations in the parameters. Especially, even with the relatively small data set, the analysis results show that the exact probabilistic model can be successfully predicted with optimized design sections. This consistency of estimating appropriate probability model is also observed in the case of the variations of other parameters, which verifies the robustness of the proposed method.

  • Moment-based reliability analysis is the method to calculate reliability using Pearson System with first-four raw moments obtained from simulation model. But it is too expensive to calculate first four moments from complicate simulation model. To overcome this drawback the MD(multiplicative decomposition) method which approximates simulation model to kriging metamodel and calculates first four raw moments explicitly with multiplicative decomposition techniques. In general, kriging metamodel is an interpolation model that is decomposed of global model and local model. The global model, in general, can be used as the constant global model, the 1st order global model, or the 2nd order global model. In this paper, the influences of global models on the accuracy and robustness of raw moments are examined and compared. Finally, we suggest the best global model which can provide exact and robust raw moments using MD method.

  • Using a deterministic design optimization, the effect of uncertainty can result in violation of constraints and deterioration of performances. For this reason, design optimization is required to guarantee reliability for constraints and ensure robustness for an objective function under uncertainty. Therefore, this study drew Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS) for the evaluation of reliability and robustness, and selected an artificial neural network as an approximate model that is suitable for MCS. Applying to the aero-structural optimization problem of aircraft wing, we can explore robuster optima satisfying the sigma level of reliability than the baseline.

  • This paper discusses an entire procedure for a robust controller design and its implementation of an AMB (active magnetic bearing) spindle, which is part II of the papers presenting details of system modeling and robust control of an AMB spindle. Since there are various uncertainties in an AMB system and reliability is the most important factor for applications, robust control naturally gains attentions in this field. However, tight evaluations of various uncertainties based on experimental data and appropriate performance weightings for an AMB spindle are still ongoing research topics. In addition, there are few publications on experimental justification of a designed robust controller. In this paper, uncertainties for the AMB spindle are classified and described based on the measurement and identification results of part I, and an appropriate performance weighting scheme for the AMB spindle is developed. Then, a robust control is designed through the mixed ${\mu}$ synthesis based on the validated accurate nominal model of part I, and the robust controller is reduced considering its closed loop performance. The reduced robust controller is implemented and confirmed with measurements of closed-loop responses. The AMB spindle is operated up to 57,600 rpm and performance of the designed controller is compared with a benchmark PID controller through experiments. Experiments show that the robust controller offers higher stiffness and more efficient control of rigid modes than the benchmark PID controller.

  • We consider a robust configuration problem of inertial sensors for inertial navigation system(INS). Fault detection and isolation(FDI) is necessary to improve reliability of the system. For FDI, there used to be more than three mutually orthogonal sensors and thus we have to consider configuration methods of sensors. Various studies in this area have been done, but the former results did not consider effect of uncertainty(misalignment, scale factor error) to determine the configuration of the sensors. In this paper robust configuration of sensors is proposed through sensitivity analysis. Also total least square(TLS) method ...
