  • In recent years, Medium size high speed Ro-Pax vessel has appeared at European sea and especially Agean sea is a center of operating in this type of Ro-Pax. This vessel operates its high Froude number range and requires higher engine power due to considerably increased resistance in comparing to large Ro-Pax in high speed range. SHI has investigated this kind of high speed Ro-Pax in accordance with market requirements and developed more advanced vessel to meet the future market needs. Process of hull form development, model test results and design of general arrangement results are introduced in this paper.

  • A hull form design technique to enhance the wave-making resistance performance for a medium size high speed Ro-Pax ship was studied introducing an optimization method and an automatic hull form modification method. SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was applied as the optimization algorithm and the geometry of hull surface was represented and modified using the NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline). The wave-making resistance performance as an objective function in the optimization procedure was evaluated using the Rankine source panel method in which nonlinearity of the free surface boundary conditions and the trim and sinkage of the ship was fully taken into account. Using the Ro-Pax ship as a base hull, the hull-form optimization method was applied to obtain the hull shape that produced the lower wave-making resistance. To verify the validity of the hull-form optimization method, the numerical results was compared with the model test results.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate user satisfaction by identifying the problems and suggesting Improvement plans of interior design in the accommodation area of Ro-Pax ships. First, the characteristics of Ro-P ax ships' accommodation area through previous studies and references, and then a field survey was conducted on seven kinds of Ro-Pax ships. Based on the field study, a questionnaire survey was administered targeting 38 experts involved in passenger ships who indicated that public facilities were the most unsatisfactory of interior design in accommodation areas. As a result of Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, the satisfaction of color showed the highest influence on user satisfaction in accommodation areas, and required the standard of the interior design in accommodation areas. The suggested results of research were the types and layout of public facilities, improvement of color design, provision of interior design standard for accommodation areas, and improvement plans for interior design of Ro-Pax ships.

  • The effect of water depth on the wave making resistance performance is great where Froude number based on the water depth is close to one. The increase of wave making resistance due to the shallow water effect is evaluated by a numerical analysis in the present study. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are employed for the present study and the equations are discretized by finite difference method. The interface between water and air is determined by the level set method. In order to validate the numerical method, the change of resistance performance for Wigley hull according to the water depth is evaluated and the computed resistance coefficient is compared with measured one. The present numerical method is applied for the simulation of wave phenomena around a Ro-Pax hull form and the computed results are discussed in the resistance performance point of view.

  • For passenger vessels, twin shaft types in propulsion system is generally adopted to provide a high-speed performance in low draught due to restricted operating condition in harbors or water channels. Struts of twin open shaft type support the shafts, bearings, and propellers. Therefore, strut design is needed to consider not only hydrodynamic performance but also structural and noise/vibration performance, In this paper, considerations in strut design at the initial design stage have been discussed based on existing references, numerical calculations, and their comparisons. Also, the strut design of a RoPax ferry has been carried out at the initial design stage, for an example.

  • A hull-form for a 32,000G/T class Ro-Pax ferry has developed in accordance with a need of ferry operators to reduce fuel oil consumption(FOC) due to the drastic increase in oil prices recently and strengthening of environmental rules and regulations such as CO2 emission. A twin-skeg type is applied as the hull-form in lieu of an open-shaft type in order to improve propulsion performance. In order to achieve this object, flow control devices are installed to reduce a propeller induced vibration which is a main reason to obstruct the application of twin-skeg type passenger vessels owing to an uncomfortable vibration level. Numerical simulation by using an in-house code and a commercial code (Fluent) has performed to find out an optimum design of the flow control devices and to check an improvement in cavity volume. Model tests in Samsung Ship Model Basin are carried out to evaluate propulsion performance with the developed twin-skeg type hull and a reference hull of open-shaft type. In conclusion, it is shown that the twin-skeg type hull is better than the open-shaft in FOC by around 7% and in cavity volume by 20% as well.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze the indoor thermal conditions in the spring of a korean coastal passenger ship which is 590-passenger Ro-Pax type built at 1997. Especially this study has focussed on the relations between the diffuser open ratio, which can be controlled by 12 steps, and the comfort. Followings are the results of this study. (1) The supply air volume to cabins are maximum 4.3 and 2 times more than design quantity when the diffusers in cabins are open 100% and 50%, respectively. (2) Regardless of diffuser open ratio, the supply air maintains constantly high temperature and below 10% of relative humidity through the experimental days. (3) All the cabins are not satisfied with the ASHRAE comfort criterion at the condition of 100% and 50% of diffuser open ratio, because of high temperature and low relative humidity. (4) At a low diffuser open ratio, number of cabins which satisfy the ASHRAE comfort criterion are increased. (5) Humidifying and dehumidifying, and hvac control system of each cabin must be reviewed and studied at the view of passengers to service more comfort environments.

  • The hydrodynamic effect of appendages for high-speed passenger vessels, such as Ro-Pax, Ro-Ro and cruiser vessels, is very severe and, therefore, it is essential to carry out the design of appendages for high-speed passenger vessels from the preliminary design stage to the final detail design stage through a full survey of the reference vessels together with sufficient technical investigation. Otherwise, many problems would be caused by mismatches between the appendages and the hull form. This paper investigates the design characteristics of some appendages, such as the side thruster, the shaft-strut, and the stern wedge, based on the design experience accumulated at Samsung, on CFD, and on model test results for high-speed passenger vessels. Further to this investigation, some practical and valuable design guidelines for such appendages are suggested.

  • In this paper, one of the harbour maneuvering tests is described. Its goal is to investigate the so-called crabbing performance of ships. By crabbing is meant the ability of the vessel to move sideways with the use of her own maneuvering devices like propellers, rudders, transverse thruster, etc. the 3m ferry model is made by ocean engineering wide tank in the university of ulsan. when the model ship is leaving and going to the quay, Transverse forces and Yawing moments are measured, in the condition of zero longitudinal force and the design draught, by load cell attached to the longitudinal center of gravity on the ship. the purpose of the experiment is to verify the reliability of ocean wide tank in university of ulsan about crabbing test compared with results of foreign research institute.

  • All passenger ships aboard more than 36 passengers are to be able to easily find escape routes when the escape way by fire with flame spread were onboard vessel (incl. Ferry, Passenger, Ro-pax, Inland Ferry) It should be impossible by ordinary emergency lights. The international Maritime Organization (IMO) gives special requirement for luminescent evaluation onboard test procedure and applicable location of low location lighting. In order to maintain the residual light source for a certain time in the low location lighting with a strip-shaped light source, the light source material must be sufficiently exposed to the light due to the proper placement of the escape route. The lighting arrangement influence how maintain low location lighting strip luminescent which measured onboard in connection with what elements are mainly sustain luminescent.
