  • Aggregate is a major natural resource used in SOC construction, such as housing, roads, ports, etc., and is a fundamental material for national construction. Although aggregates account for only about 4% of the construction cost, aggregates occupy about 80% of the construction volume and are essential factors that determine the quantity and quality of buildings. For river, underwater, riverbed, sea, and land aggregates, it is difficult to rapidly increase the production of aggregates when there is difficulty in supply and demand due to environmental problems and limited resources during production, whereas forest aggregates are relatively easy to increase production. Forest aggregates are considered promising as alternative aggregate resources in the future when reducing other aggregates due to their abundance of natural resources, and are an effective aggregate source that can flexibly respond to aggregate demand in accordance with well-organized plans and policies. This study proposed the plan for activating the development of forest aggregates in the case of long and short transport distances, which is a factor that has a great influence on the development, and measures for the current difficulties in forest aggregate development

  • The present study analyzed the spatial characteristics of S village according to the Feng-Shui theory(風水理論). People's life span is affected by several factors including hereditary constitution, dietary life and life habits but recently there is an opinion that longevity village in Korea are commonly located in areas at a proper altitude. The objective of the present study was to basic investigate the characteristics of S village from the viewpoint of Feng-Shui(風水). As for this study, it will be given help to a longevity village plan. For this purpose, we conducted field survey and map investigation of the natural geographic situation of S village focused on Ryong(龍, contiguous line of terrestrial stratum), Hull(穴, village location), Sa(砂, geographical feature of surrounding mountains), Su(水, water flow) and Hyang(向), which are Feng-Shui(風水) objects to be observed. According to the result of this research, S Village, which has mountains in the rear and a river in the front, was found to be in fine geographic situation equipped with Sashinsa(四神砂). According to the Feng-Shui theory(風水理論), the village was hang-ju-hyoung(行舟形), which means that people and properties flourish together. A shortcoming of the village was the absence of Ahnsan(案山) to block harmful winds blowing to the fore of the village. In addition, another shortcoming of the village in terms of Feng-Shui(風水) was the large variation of temperature because of its location surrounded by high mountains as if the village was situated inside a bowl. The Hyang(向) of village houses were arranged by the geographical feature and not by Feng-Shui(風水).

  • Estuary of River Nakdong(in south-eastern coast of Korean Peninsula) is the most representative site of delta in Korea. This study is to elucidate morpho-structural background associated with the embayment area and sedimentation processes, having allowed development of the delta. In this area, Great morphological trait of the embayment area had been formulated by differential erosion exploiting regional fracture system(NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, E-W,...) of tectonic origin. For this reason, outline of the embayment basin shows quadrangular plan, and ridges and dissected valleys of neighbouring mountains draw frequently morphological lineament pattern. At the last glacial age when delta deposit had not yet filled the actual embayment basin of the Nakdong, mechanical weathering(frost shattering) and mass-movement processes had provided detritus materials composed of blocks, boulders on bottom the basin. With the postglacial transgression in the Holocene, the basin had been submerged, then began to be filled with fluvio-marine deposits from Kimhae-Yangsan area toward actual estuarine zone, so that Nakdong delta have been formed. Analysis and synthesis of from hundreds of boring data of the delta area reveal that progression of delta formation have been accompanied with the development of barrier islands. If the barrier islands had grown as forming a plural row, then their intervals have posteriorly filled with another fluvio-marine deposits. Besides, it shows that delta deposits are essentially alluvial. However, at the periphery of the delta, intervention of fine marine deposits is frequently found.

  • The TMDL standard flow as applying watershed management regime uses the average low flow of past 10 years. Moreover, the TMDL implementation assessment has been enforced through management of pollutant load satisfied objective water quality. Even though the present allocation and management through averaged low flow are still convenient, they are not enough to solve ultimate goals of watershed management to keep up recovery of water body. To maintain the same water quality concentration, the standard flow is required to consider total discharge in management plan which helps to keep healthy ecosystem. In view of this, it would be possible to approach reasonable assessment by reflecting variably changeable discharge from precipitation-streamflow relation and the TMDL standard establishment considering artificial regulated flow. Therefore, this study attempts to develop the TMDL method using Load Duration Curve (LDC) and Streamflow-Load Rating Curve (QLRC) considering total discharge and finds drawbacks with solutions as applying on Nakdong river TMDL unit watershed. Finally, this research evaluates possibility of application on pollutant load allocating and implementation assessment in Korea.

  • THe drought analysis is performed by applications of truncation level method and conditional probability concept for hydrologic time series in Han river basin. The distributed trend of conditional probability is determined using kriging method for the time series. This study uses daily flowrate, monthly rainfall, and daily high temperature data sets. The daily flowrate data of 12 years(1986~1997) is used for the analysis. Also, the 14 years' data sets(1986~1999) for monthly rainfall and daily high temperature obtained from the National Weather Service of Korea are used in this study. In the cases of flowrate and rainfall data sets, the estimated value corresponding to the truncation level is decreased as the truncation level is increased but in the high temperature data, the value is increased as the truncation level is increased. The conditional probability varies according to the observations and sites. However, the distributed trend of drought is similar over the basin. As a result, the possibility of the drought is high in the middle and lower parts of Han river basin and thus it is recommended the distributed trend of drought be considered when the plan or measures for drought are established.

  • The most important parameters of the Muskingum method, widely used in hydrologic river routing, are the storage coefficient and the weighting factor. The Muskingum method does not consider the lateral inflow from the upstream to the downstream, but the lateral inflow actually occurs due to the rainfall on the watershed. As a result, it is very difficult to estimate the storage coefficient and the weighting factor by using the actual data of upstream and downstream. In this study, the flow without the lateral inflow was calculated from the river flow through the hydraulic flood routing by using the HEC-RAS one-dimensional unsteady flow model, and the method of the storage coefficient and the weighting factor calculation is presented. Considering that the storage coefficient relates to the travel time, the empirical travel time formulas used in the establishment of the domestic river basin plan were applied as the storage coefficient, and the simulation results were compared and analyzed. Finally, we have developed a formula for calculating the travel time considering the flow rate, and proposed a method to perform flood routing by updating the travel time according to the inflow change. The rise and fall process of the flow rate, the peak flow rate, and the peak time are well simulated when the travel time in consideration of the flow rate is applied as the storage coefficient.

  • Since late 1970s, water quality monitoring had been performed in Korea by various agencies according to their own needs and objectives. Lacking of consistency in principles, such diverse operation has been producing difficulties in management of information on water quality parameters. These difficulties resulted from the fact that the expansion of monitoring networks had been based not on systematic methodology with considerations on scientifically established planning objectives but on personal experiences and subjective judgments in locating monitoring stations. This study aimed, therefore, to develop a selection methodology for locating monitoring stations to provide various informations on water quality to satisfy various monitoring objectives such as understanding short and long term trends of water quality, monitoring violations to water quality standards, identifying external causes and sources affecting water quality changes, supporting utilization of water resources, examining short-term variations in water quality through a concentrated investigation, estimating pollution loads from each unit watershed, supporting water quality modeling, and establishing informative systems for water resources management. Also, we applied the proposed methodology and presented an improved expansion plan for water quality monitoring networks in the Han River.

  • Lately multipurpose dam is required to consider various interests such as quality, ecological environment as well as flood control, water supply, hydropower generation, etc. The objective of this study is to investigation and analysis of water temperature in the areas where there are social conflicts due to cold water outflow. In this study, we monitored water temperature of Juam regulation dam, downstream river, Suncheon bay in a long term period and performed comparative analysis on a change of water temperature in downstream river and Suncheon bay by using three-dimensional numerical mode (EFDC) considering various external factors such as water outflow amount. The result of monitoring and numerical modelling indicates that effects of cold water outflow takes place from april to september. Also effects of the low temperature discharge of dam was complicatedly altered by various factors such as outflow time and amount, weather and tide level conditions etc. The result of this study can be utilized as a basic data for establishing improvement of dam operation plan to minimize negative effects of dam's cold temperature water outflow to downstream river and coastal area.

  • In this study, the satellite images and the GIS technique are used to select the basin characteristics parameters as the basis of water resources management of river basin. The study area is Geum-ho river basin and the hydrologic characteristics data are computed through the database of the basin characteristics parameters classified by subjects with 35 maps correspond to the study basin of 1:25,000 scale as the basic map. As the result, the drawing up of land use map through satellite image processing that provides the quantitative informations for the land is very efficient to analysis the extensive land use information of the basin, and exact analysis of mass surface data is possible and the feasibility of statistic computation between spatial subjects as it superpose on other subject map is ascertained. It is thought also that the analysis of the basin characteristics data can be utilized very effectively for the basin management and the analysis of basin surface area, once it is expressed numerically for database, since the superposition analysis with different subject map and the correlative analysis with the property data are possible although the tracing process of each subject in the basic map is not efficient. Especially, modification and renewal of the data for the change of land surface become easy, therefore more rapid and exact selection of the basin characteristics data and the construction of more efficient basin management plan are possible.
