Query execution time minimization is an important objective in distributed database design. While total time minimization is an objective for On Line Transaction Processing (OLTP), response time minimization is for Decision Support queries. We formulate the sub-query allocation problem using analytical models and solve with genetic algorithm (GA). We show that query execution plans with total time minimization objective are inefficient from response time perspective and vice versa. The procedure is tested with simulation experiments for queries of up to 20 joins. Comparison with exhaustive enumeration indicates that GA produced optimal solutions in all cases in much less time.

We propose power-saving real-time scheduling method for mixed task sets which consist of both time-based periodic and event-based aperiodic tasks in the automotive operating system. In this system, we have to pursue maximization of power-saving using the slack time estimation and minimization of response time of aperiodic tasks simultaneously. However, since these two goals conflict each other, one has to make a compromise between them according to the given application domain. In this paper, we find the adjustment factor which gives better response time of aperiodic tasks with slight power consumption increase. The adjustment factor denotes the gravity of response time for aperiodic tasks. We apply the ccEDF scheduling for time-based periodic tasks and then calculate new utilization to be applied to the adjustment factor. In this paper, we suggest the lccEDF algorithm to make a tradeoff between the two goals by systematically adjusting the factor. Simulation results show that our approach is excellent for variety of task sets.
In this paper, we investigate a discrete-time non-autonomous predator-prey system with the Beddington-DeAngelis functional response. By using the coincidence degree and the related continuation theorem as well as some priori estimates, easily verifiable sufficient criteria are established for the existence of positive periodic solutions.
Steered response power(SRP) based algorithm uses a focused beamformer which steers the array to various locations and searches for a peak in output power to localize sound sources. SRP-PHAT, a phase transformed SRP, shows high accuracy, but requires a large amount of computation time. This paper proposes an algorithm that clusters search spaces in advance to reduce computation time of SRP based algorithms.
The step response of the Manabe standard form[1]has little overshoot and shows almost same waveforms regardless of the order of the characteristic polynomials. In some situations it is difficult to control the rise time and settling time simultaneously of the step response of the Manabe standard form. To control its rise time and settling time efficiently, we develop the generalization of the Manabe standard form: we try to find out the SRFS(Slow Rise time & Fast Settling time) form which has the slower rise time and faster settling time than those of the Manabe standard form. we also consider the other three forms: FRSS(Fast Rise time & Slow Settling time), SRFS(Slow Rise time & Fast Settling time) and SRSS(Slow Rise time & Slow Settling time) forms. In this paper, by using the genetic algorithm, we obtain all the coefficient of the four forms we mention above. Finally, we design a controller for a given plant so that the overall system has the performance that the rise time is faster, the settling time is slower than those of the Manabe standard form.

The popularity of augmented reality (AR) applications and games are in high demand. Currently, the best common platform to implement AR services is on a smartphone, as online games, navigators, personal assistants, travel guides are among the most popular applications of smartphones. However, the power consumption of an AR application is extremely high, and therefore, highly adaptable and dynamic low power control schemes must be used. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) schemes are widely used in smartphones to minimize the energy consumption by controlling the device's operational frequency and voltage. DVFS schemes can sometimes lead to longer response times, which can result in a significant problem for AR applications. In this paper, an AR response time monitor is used to observe the time interval between the AR image input and device's reaction time, in order to enable improved operational frequency and AR application process priority control. Based on the proposed response time monitor and the characteristics of the Linux kernel's completely fair scheduler (CFS) (which is the default scheduler of Android based smartphones), a response time step control (RSC) scheme is proposed which adaptively adjusts the CPU frequency and interactive application's priority. The experimental results show that RSC can reduce the energy consumption up to 10.41% compared to the ondemand governor while reliably satisfying the response time performance limit of interactive applications on a smartphone.
One of the particulars to be considered for providing wireless web service with PC web page is the hardware environment between PC and mobile device. It is because time cost is required in producing mobile contents to suit environment of the connected terminal. Therefore, server side should take account of response time and disk capacity of server. Response time is delayed by content conversion and disk capacity need to store various versions about one content. This paper suggests a pre-service and post-transcoding method to provide faster response time for a mobile terminal. The pre-service is to minimize response time by placing the top priority in servicing contents saved in cache as much as possible even if the quality of contents serviced to mobile terminal may be low. After pre-service is provided, the mobile content is transcoded for the terminal later. Performance level of method proposed was compared through experiment and the result of analysis was described.
The main object of this study is to evaluate the seismic response effects on a reinforced concrete building isolated by triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP) bearings. The site-response effects arise from the difference in the local soil conditions at the support points of the buildings. The local soil conditions are, therefore, considered as soft, medium and firm; separately. The results on the responses of the isolated building are compared with those of the non-isolated. The building model used in the time history analysis, which is a two-dimensional and eight-storey reinforced concrete building with and without the seismic isolation bearings and/or the local soil conditions, is composed of two-dimensional moment resisting frames for superstructure and of plane elements featuring plane-stress for substructure. The TCFP bearings for isolating the building are modelled as of a series arrangement of the three single concave friction pendulum (SCFP) bearings. In order to investigate the efficiency of both the seismic isolation bearings and the site-response effects on the buildings, the time history analyses are elaborately conducted. It is noted that the site-response effects are important for the isolated building constructed on soft, medium or firm type local foundation soil. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the site-response has significant effects on the response values of the structure-seismic isolation-foundation soil system.

If the accelerometers are used in measuring the response, the absolute values of the velocity and displacement are not usually obtainable because their initial values are not accounted for in the integration of the acceleration response. A new dynamic response conversion algorithm of both the time domain and the frequency domain is proposed for the problem in estimating the displacement data by defining the transformed responses. In this algorithm, the displacement response can be obtained from the measured acceleration records by integration without requiring the knowledge of the initial velocity and displacement information. The applicability of the technique is tested by an example problem using the real bridge's superstructure under several cases of moving load. In the response conversion procedure of the frequency domain, the identified response according to the frequency can be estimated by changing over the limits of integration. If the reliability of the identified responses is ensured, it is expected that the proposed method for estimating the impact factor can be useful in the bridge's dynamic test. This method can be useful in those practical cases when the direct measurement of the displacement is difficult as in the dynamic studies of huge structure.

A fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer has been developed for measuring the $CO_2$ concentration during transient condition of a SI engine. The analyzer consists of the non-dispersive infrared absorption method, electrical chopping system and water cooling system. The analyzer has good repeatability, linearity and permissible drift characteristic. Besides, it showed 18ms of a response to measure the $CO_2$ concentration. The fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer was applied to a single cylinder SI engine and the $CO_2$ emission was examined during engine start. Simultaneously, the standard exhaust gas analyzer, which has slow response time, was used for confirming the accuracy of the exhaust gas analysis using the fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer. The developed analyzer showed much faster responsive characteristic than that of a standard analyzer and made cycle by cycle exhaust gas analysis possible. The transient engine operating characteristics will be estimated from the $CO_2$ concentration of engine-out emissions and engine operating variables.
